b~NT~AL DIVISION; Mr. David Christy, Mining Registrar.

Mining during the past quarter; both in alluvial and' quartz workings. has progressed ~ith rather more favorable results than heretofore. It will be seen that the average yieHl. from quartz. shows an increase, and it may be fairly presumed that when this' branch of ~ining industry becomes mor,e, fully _de'ICeloped the re~urns frqm this goldfield will be as encouraging as that from any otherin the colony;" In alluviaL mining the Band of Hope Company have-discovered an alluvial reef wash about 130 feet above the gutter level, from which very good yields are being obtained. There has from time to time been similarly ri~h workings met with in many of the mines on the Sebastopol plateau, but unfortunately the infiul( of water, wi}ich kept gradually increasing as company after company ceased operations, has caused reef workings to be almost discontinued. It is to be regretted that the company which waS some time since proposed for the purpose of ,pumping (oyercoming ,the water which had swamped out nearly all the old alluvial mines), did not meet with that 'support froml capitalists which such a speculation would warrant. It may be fairly inferred from past and occasional rich ,alluvial reef discoveries, that if the difficulties presented by water were overoome, there'could be opened up a rich field of alluvial workings, which would make this goldfield prosperous for many years. '.,'" ,. " , '. '

The City of Ballarat Company have bottomed their shaft since the date of my last report. The company have had to contend with ansi overcome 2,800 gallons of water per. minute in sinking; the whole of which ha~ been"stopped back by a llew process invented by Mr. Thompson, the manager. The strata passed ,through, i~,sinking are chiefly basalt, of which there have been four distinct rocks, ma.king' a. total depth .of 397 feet of basalt and sedimentary layers. The sinking is now in pipeclay, and in a few' weeks they will have reached a depth sufficient for opening out. In my nex.t report I hope I shall be able to number: this claim among theJgold.producing mines., , "

'l'he consumption of water by mining companies during the quarter was 20,970,000 gallons, at 4d. per 1,000 ~~. '

. AdUVIAL MINING.

During the quarter the workings in the main Durham gutter, at the Perseverance mine, have proved remunerative. The washdirt has improved considerably; and it is a matter to be wondered at that the miles of this alluvial auriferous drift should remain unworked, with such excellent returns from this the only mine 'now on the lead.

I have no new discoveries to record during this quarter. . .. The Stonewall Company, on the old workings of the Black Lead, have improved yields; and some excellent

yields have been obtained at tlie Red Jacket. ' The prospecting party have as yet not been successful. '. '

This branch of mining is steadily improving, Fairweather Reef especially yielding well. . On the Devonshire, Holden and party have had to get their boiler repaired, the hydraulic test applied having proved some of the plates n~ ,

The yield of gold for ·the quarter shows a considerable decrease, being less than that of the previous quarter by 1,746 ozs.· . . . "

The decadence of mining throughout the district is becoming general, the exception being in favor of Haddon • and Lintons, where the yield is still kept up with wonted regularity. No new workings have been discovered, nor is there any marked disposition on the part of ·the miners' to embark in \l-nything, like expensive prospecting. There is not sufficient encouragement now to induce them to incur any outlay in exploring doubtful localities, and the known leads are either worked already or being subjected now to that process. These remarks 'apply to alluvial mining; and as regards quartz mining, its condition, although looked upon as more hopeful, is at present equally depressed.

The yields of the principal mines are as follow :- '

ALLUVIAL MINING.

No mining under this head has been carried on during the quarter except the fossicking in the old worked-out. alluvial gullies, which has engaged the attention of a few men. Fourteen ounces of gold only were obtained from this branch of mining during the quarter.

. QUARTZ MINING.

Egerton.-Black-horse United Company.-At the time of my last report it was stated that pumping operations were still being carried on,and that the water had been reduced to the SOO-foot level, at which it was intended to resume mining operations. The shaft having been carefully overhauled, in the beginning of January IDen were sent below to break quartz at the above-mentioned level, and on the 10th of the same month the two five-head batteries were started, the remaining twelve standing idle till the mine is sufficiently opened up to admit of more men being employed in breaking quartz. Since starting, about 140 feet have been driven, and 1,059 tons of quartz raised and crushed, yielding 441 OZ8. 3 dwts. IS grs. of gold. Thelode from which this stone was taken is between 8 and 10 feet in thickness. ' At present a considerable amount of dead work is being done, such as sinking the No.2 shaft, which is situated on that portion of ground held on tribute from the Egerton Company. It is intended to connect the work. ings from this shaft with those at the SOO-foot level in the No.1 shaft for ventilation, &c. The number of men employed is 61.

The Egerton Company.-This company have again' resumed operatiolls in the shaft in the cutting, and are now raising stone from it and the No.2" Rose" shaft. They have commenced reducing quartz with the new engine and battery, of which mention was made in my last report, and have now 43 stamp,·heads regularly at work. The number of men employed is 175.

South Learmonth and Egerton Amalgamated Company.-During the quarter this company have regularly been at work prospecting their ground at the 400 and 500.foot levels. Although a lode has been met with in the 500-foot level, and work?d for a distance of 170 feet, yet it is found to be unremunerative, as the ground is much broken up in cODsequence of crosscuts and slides. The number of men employed is 20. ' ,

,. The Argyle Company during the quarter have principally been engaged in crushing quartz which was left on the surface by a previous party. 240 tons were crushed, which yielded 36 ozs. of gold, or 3 dwts. to the tun. The number of men employed is 6. '

North Argyle Company.-This company have been engaged in prospecting their f,'Tound at a depth of 135 feet, but as yet nothing of a remunerative nature has been met with. The number of men employed is 5.

The Chinese company of 12 men, re"istered as Ah Jack and Co., are still engaged in washing the tailings from the Egerton Company's battery, with the same result as last quarter, having obtained an average yield of 4 ozs. of gold per week, or a total of 52 ozs. for the quarter. '

The Chinese company of 11 men washing the tailings from the Black.horse. United Company's battery have not been so successful as Ah Jack and Co., as only 26 ozs. of gold were obtained during the quarter, or an average yield of 2 ozs. per week.

Gordon.-Parker's United Company.-This company during the quarter have raised and crushed from their underlay shaft, on lease block 1023, 1,100 tons of quartz, which yielded 422 OZ5. of gold,or 7 dwts. 16'15 grs. to the ton. This shaft is now a total depth of 455 feet, and the lode is still from 7 to 8 feet in thickness. The drive from the main (engine) shaft at a depth of 400 feet has been connected with the workings in the underlay shaft, and the quartz obtained from this shaft is trucked at this level to the engine· shaft, a distance of about 2,200 feet. With a view of cutting a payable lode, which is known to exist to the south of the main shaft, prospecting operations' are

. being carried on at the 400-foot level. The number of men employed is 60. No work has been done by the Homeward.bound Company during the quarter, hut the machinery is still on the

ground. Mars Company ha:ve sunk a shaft 50 feet in depth, opened out and driven 20 feet, at which distance a lode was

cut, which appears not to be carrying golg. They, however, intend to test its value by sinking another shaft upon it farther north. The number of men employed is 3. ,

, United Miners Company.-During the quarter this company have sunk a shaft 70 feet in depth, opened out at tl.lat depth and dr-iven west 27 feet. A well· defined lode, carrying a little gold, was met with at this point. Ten feet have been driven along its course. No trial crushing has yet been made. '£he number of men employed is 6.

IRON.

Lal Lal Iron Company, Lal Lal.-No ore has been raised nor smelted during the quarter.

STEIGLITZ SUBDIVISION.

Mr. O. W. Collins," ]l1ining Registrar.

There has been but little gold obtained on any of the fields in this division during the past quarter, as will be seen by the returns.

Water has been very scarce. No water was sold during the quarter.

BLACKWOOD' DIVISION AND BLUE MOUNTAIN SOUTH SUBDIVISION.

Mr. John F. Hansen, Mining" Registrar.

Qu ARTZ MINING. , , Mining matters on the whole have been rather stagnant during the quarter. With the exceptions of the Sultan

and 1\iounter Brothers' mines no remunerative returns have been obtained from any of the mines at present held in this division; this, however, is mainly owing to the great scarpity of water, which not only stopped aU batteries driven by water power, but also ,a number of steam-engines where only a limited supply can be obtained.

The Sultan Company are sinking their main shaft another 100 feet, or to a total depth of 800 feet. The present l?west level (700 feet) has now been thoroughly opened up with good prospects of payable gold, and as the permanency of reefs in this division has now been establishcd, hopes are entertained that it will be the means of bringing ~n capital for a further development of the numerous lodes in the district.

BUCKLAND bI'VISION.' lI-Ir. Lewis C. 'Kinc"itela, Mining .Registrar. '

Alluvial mining in this division is at,ill almost excluaive~y i~, th,e ,hands of the:C:hin~se, a large proportio~ of whom are merely fossicking, The only two important u!1dertakmgs m thiS class of mmmg III European hands, ViZ., the Bright Extended Sluicincr Company and Messrs, Brown !l.ud Airey's claim' at Freeburgh, upon each of which from £700 to £1,000 I-tave been e~pended, have not py any means ;-ealized the projectors', e~pectations., ,

The very small quantity of quartz crusbed here dunng the past quarter is ill part owmg to the scarcity of water, but results ch:iefly ~ro~ t~e greater ,number of our, mos~ important .reefs be.ing, ~or the present at least,. nonproductive. There is no mdlCatlOll of any lmprovemeIlt either m the quantity of stone raised, and consequently m the number of· hands engaged for wages, for the ensuing'winter. . . . .

The average per ton of the quartz crushed here for t~e pas~ quarter, ViZ., 1 oz: ~ .dwts. ,18:27 grs., is worthy o~ <,

note, bcing by far the highest of any quarterly average obt~llled m ,the Buckland·dlVlslOn WithIn any twelve years experience. ',. , " Eight sluice.heads of water, averaging lOs. per head per week, were sold in the quarter.

ALEXANDRA, SUBDIVISION.' Mr. R. w., S. Greig, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

ALLUVIAL MINING.

. Alluvial mining in our deep leads is absolutely ~t a standstill. " The Triumph Company's machinery has been removed from the ground, and the plant of the New Gobur Company has also been disposed of and par~ially r<:moved.

The workings in the Goulburu River, and other shallow workings, have not proved remunerative durmg the past quarter, the latter chiefly arising from the extreme drought of this season.

QUARTZ MINING.

The Perseverance Tt:ibute Company have been engaged in draining their works, repairing their shafts.and drives, and are 'now raising quartz. ,

The Providence Company have been engaged during the past quarter in draining their m,ines and in prospecting their ground;, they have now nearly completed their drainage, and are in hopes .of crus~in~ durin~ the ensuin? quarter.

The tnbute party at the Welcome Reef, Tea-tree Greek, have been engaged smkmg their shaft. They hope to resume winning quartz during the ensuing quarter.

The returns herewith are very meagre, chiefly owing to the claims recently worked at the Acheron giving out, and no new discoveries being made in that vicinity.

DRY CREEK SUBDIVISION, Mr. J. Pemberton, 111ining Regist1'a1',

There is an improvement in quartz prospecting since my last report on the table-land, Dry Creek. .A machine is in course of erection. . '

GAFFNEY'S CREEK SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, lJ1ining Surveyor and Registrar.

The excellent yields obtained by 'the tributers of the A 1 Gold Mining Company; and of Hunt:s, acting as stimulants to the remarkable enterprise of the miners of this subdhision, have caused every mine with available machinery to be taken up by tributers, with one solitary exception .. It is therefore with hopeful anticipations of good yields to come that we look forward,to the proximate winter rains. '. '

The A 1 Company's tributers continue on excellent stone, a~d; but for want of water, would be crushing. The Hunt's Oompany's tributers, having all but completed the crushings of old mullock, are on excellent

prospects in the reef. The Wallaby tributers are driving for' their best shot of gOld, U1ld have: yet some 100 feet to go; but they are

also crushing inferior matrix, giving them about 30s. a week per 'man. , . , The Golden Belt tributers have obtained yields justifying, so far, the extreme percentage (37 per cent.) they are

giving for the mine, say about £2 per man per week. . The Rose of Denmark mine is again on tribute, al)d the tributers (six men) have just washed up 690zs, 5 dwts.

for six weeks' work, which, according to their tribute, arrangements, will give them wages at the rate of £3 5s. or thereabouts a week. They expect an improved result next crushing.

The Great Eastern, the Lauraville, and Dempsey's have all been lately taken by parties of tributers, and two of these are already at work. ' '

In addition to the above cheering facts is to be recorded the discover'y by William Brown (prospecting'for himself and a party of contributing miners and others resident at Sailor Bill's Creek and the Ten-Mile) of a reef long looked for on Ryan's Creek, and of which specimens had been found more than twelve years ago by Mr. D. Harris a1id his brother, The vein is about 8 in. thick near the surface, on which it shows without any cap, and !ies in metamorphic slate. The stone is first class, carrying its gold imbedded in the quartz in solid pellets freely dispersed, and promising a yield of some 4 ozs, per ton. ,

The alluvial miners have averaged about 30s. per week during the quarter • . . . I hear of no water having been sold. No miners are engaged on raising other minerals than gold in'this sub.

diVIslon. '

WOOD'S POINT SUBDIVISION. Mr. A. B. Ainsworth, 111ining Surveyor ~nd Registrar.

There is but little to report of this subdivision. The enterprise or'miners is discouraged by the absence of any' material assistance on the part of storekeepers or others, and the progress of the dislrict is thus arrested .

. The Prince of w: ales tr!buters hav:- obtaine~ a handson;e reward !Ol' their enterprise, as also the tributers of the Mormng Star Prospectmg chum, :and the Hope 'rnbute has YIelded a faIr return. Minmg languishes notwithstanding, and tribute parties are only formed with great dilliculty, and are easily discouraged. The summer has been unusually' dry withal, and water scarce at most wat~r-vower engines.

28

The Lady Franklin Company, after spending· much time and £400 on a tunnel, have suspended their operations and are once mOre raising gold out of their original workings. The mine looks well.' . '

The alluvial miners have done fairly during the past quarter, their earnings amounting to about 278. per week ~m~ ,

,I do not hear of any water having been sold.. . -No miners are employed in this district on other metals than. gold. ,

BIG RIVER SUBDIVISION.

M;r. A. B. Ainsworth, Mining Surveyor, and Registrar.

The prospects of this subdivision have not improved. The summer has been unusually dry, and reducing operations were necessarily suspended· in consequence.

'l'he Luck '8 All is not yet at work, but the Londonderry mine is once more under tribute. The tributers are repairing the old rails of the. tramways of this mine while waiting for water. '

The Unknown mine is looking well, but the owners cannot resume crushing operations until the winter rains shall have begun to fall. .,

The Belle of Victoria mine is also .once more at work, but little is to be expected in the way of returns. The dl'Y season has favored the river workings, but the earnings of the alluvial miners have been very small

(under £1 per man per week), and the withholding of the lands from settlement along the river banks leaves them . but a very precarious existence, and drives them out of the district. . . I hear of no water being sold.

No miners employed in the search of other metals than gold.

MITTA MITTA DIVISION.

)fIr. W. H. Cochrane, lIfinirlg Registrm:. , .

The alluvial diggings on the Mitta Mitta and Snowy Creek: hJve been rather·slack this quarter, in consequence of the continued dry weather. There is little fresh to report, excepting that a small 1118h has occurred to the Dart· Rjver, a tril:lutary of the Mitta. Ahout 25 men are at work, but as yet little more than prospecting has been done. -

No water was sold during the quarter.

JAMIESON ·SUBDIVISION.

Mr. W. H. Edwards,.Mining Registrar.

There is but little of importance to report with reference to the past quarter, no new discoveries having been • ·made.

The Gleeson Lease Company have been unable' to C1118h during the past quarter, owing to the scarcity of water. . . . .. .

The Sailor Bill's Company, having purchased machinery, are making arrangements for its immediate erection, as they have stone broken sufficient to keep it in full work for six months. .

The Poverty Company have made a fresh start and are· now driving a low-level tunnel. They expect to strike the reef in about 200 fe'st. . .

The Mack Creek. Company are still driving the :bottom level along the reef, hut the results of the c111shings during the past· quarter have not been up to expectations.

The Alabama Company are doing well and are extending the bottom level to the north. The stone is looking well. '

The No.1 South Alabama, having made arrangements with the Alabama Company for the use of' their tqnnel, are now opening out the reef. The stone is looking well. . . .

SANDHURST MINING DISTRICT.

SANDHURST DIVISION.

~Mr. N. G. Stephens, Mining Ref:listrar ..

In quartz mining there has been a considerable falling off 1n the quantity crushed and the average yield, . although as many or more claims have contributed to the total.

About a month since an alluvinJ prospecting party (Messrs. Wells, Massoni, and Pattet'son) reported having fOUlid payable gold in some made hills about five miles from Sandhtirst on the l\'IcIvor road. II: rilsh ~o the placecalled the Homebush diggings~ensued, and in a fortnight se;reral hundred digg~rs had markedo~t cl~im,s an.d commenced sinking, but only a few of them bottomed, and no finds worth mentlOnmg were made. The slllkmg IS

from 20 to 40 feet, part of it through v:cry hard conglomerate. The place is now ahuost deserted, but there are a few left who are determined to give it a further trial, feeling assured from the prospects they have obtained that they will be able to make a living there .. The same kind of country extends for mil",s, and has been tried in various places years ago, but never thoroughly tested. . '

The quantity of. water sold for mining purposes during the past quarter is 22,632,000 gallons.

KILMORE DIVISION. Mr. James W. Osborn, Mining Registrar.

A prospecting party have been raising quartz at the Shepherd's Reef, Reedy Creek, but the distance to the mill was too grea~ to allow of profits, and the claim has been placed under exemption, ,

AllUVIal miners on Sunday and Reedy Creeks are obtaining a,mere pittance. No. water was sold in tpis division during the quarter,

HEATHCOTE DIVISION ,AND WARANGA SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. J. T. Strong, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

As far as regards the public companies in this division, there is no alteration to report. Mining operations are being pursued steadily.

Two claims, held ~nder minerS' rights by CMrlee Husfeldt and 'Michael Manton respectively, have produced some very good stone during the, last quarter, yielding about ~ o~s. to the ton, As the gold was taken to Melbourne lind sold there, it does not appear in my return.

MAJORCA: 'SUBDIVISION.

Mr. John M. 1lfurphy, Mining Registrar.

, I have the honor to report that 'during the 'past quarter mining in this' subdivision has been very dull, especially in alluvial. The Golden Gate, Company and the U:pited Miners' Company, RockY,Flat, have both bottomed their shafts, and are now engaged, main driving with sanguine hopes of success~ The Duke of Edinburg4 Company, 'Walker's Paddock, McCalll;lm's Creek, ha.s been let on, tribute, and are now driving for another run of alluvial ground. The Prince Alfred Company (quartz), Deed'~'Reef, GerDlan Gully, have had a couple of good 'crushings during the quarter, the quartz averagi~g over 4 OZ8: 4 d,vts: tc:'th~ ton. ,The ,Reliance ~ompany, the ~op.g iVlcng and Columbia Company, and the Enterpnse Company, are' still. Idle for the, want of capital, although It 18 an accepted fact that there is good payable rich ground in each of the claims.

DUNOLLY AND TARNAGULLA DIVISIONS.

Mr. W. G. Couchman, lI-iining Surveyo; and Registrar. Dunoll.o/ Division.

During the past quarter a slightJmprovement in quartz mining has taken place in this division. . Bealiba Reef.-Queen's Birthday Company have crushed 1,224 tons of quartz for a yield of 8040zs. 6 dwts. of

gold, or,an average of 13 dwts. 3'41 grs. per ton. The prospects of the mine are very good; the lode now being worked at the 300 and 400-foot levels is /'j feet thick, from which more stone can be obtained than their present appliances can crush. Another hattery of five stamp-heads is aboJIt to be erected .. 'rhis company recently purchased t1le Golds.brollghQuartz Mining Company's mine and plant, and as the ground adjoins their own leases it makes a 'Very valuable addition to their property., 'Two pairs of Chilian mills have been erected for the treatment of tailings and pyrites. Another lease of 15 acres of ground has been' applied for in' the legal manager's name, adjoining east of their existing leases, and two other .lel!-s\is s~uth and sOllt~-e\l>st. have been applied for, for gold mining purposes, by Messrs. Yates and Borwick respectively., .. . '. .

Monday Morning Reef has been taken up by a co.operative party. Wayman's Reef, Moliagul.-Pumping and winding machinery is being erected. Queen's Reef Company, Moliagul.-The tributers are now workillg a lode 3 feet thick, at a depth of 75 feet,

with good prospects. .

The Prince of Wales Tribute Company have been in full work during the quart(ilr, for a yield of 3340zs. 17 dwts. of gold; some main driving had to be done. They have now tapped the lead at a lower level with ex:cene~t prospects.

CASTLEMAINE DIVISION.'

iJfr. Thomas L: Brown, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. . , Very little change in the phase of mining operations' and prospects has occurred during the' quarter. Several

prospecting claims have been taken up upon abandoned reefs and some leased ground, as the Old Quartz Hill, Old Wattle Gully, Caledonia companies, and others, are being re-worked, but as yet 'without discovering any very rich stone., . . .

The Eureka Consols have connected their 360 and 460-foot levels by a winze and are now well ventilated. The Oriental Company have struck the reef at 150 feet deep, 2 feet 6 inches thick, showing a little gold. The Chewton United have driven their 230-foot cross-cut 217 feet east under their old runs of gold; and in

their 290-foot cross-cut west they have what they consider the main reef, in which the gold appears to be striking north. The Ajax Tribute are on payable stone at the 300-foot level. The Old Quartz Hill 'l;ribute are sink~ng .a winze

upon the eastern face of. the reef, 'expecting thereby to find the old runs of gold. Several private rarties are obtaining good prospects and hope for better times.

POPULATION.

There hlJ,s been 'no perceptible alteration during th~ past quarter; a few persons have left to enga'ge in agricul. t nrl11 pursuits, but others have taken their place. . . . . .

PUDDLING AND SLUIOING.

Operations, although . not highly remunerative, are still carried on by a few, wh,o will-probably for a limited o period adhere to an old system of gold extraction, which seems to be satisfactory.. ,

QUARTZ MINING.

In a general way there is a marked improvement, and some of the olrl abandoned ground is being taken up a~d re.worked, notably that on the old Sebastopol Reef, Middletoil Creek; a party of miners (Messrs. Williams and Com-pany) have taken up a claim there, which promises to pay very well. •

This small co-operative company have p.urchased and removed the engine and plant formerly in possession of the Cattle's Reef Company, at Fryerstown; the machinery is not very extensive or of great value, but will probably answer the purpose of the companYHwho will be able to crush their quartz on the spot, and thus save the serions item of cartage. . . .

, The re:working of this reef is .expected to lead to the prospecting of the ranges i~ the immediate neighborhood the indications being highly favorable to the existence of numerous quartz reefs. Claims have already been taken up and operations commenced. in the immediate locality. _ .

The Ferron's Company are still sinking the main shaft, the total depth of which is 343 feet from surface; the deepest cross-cut 330 feet, in which payable gold has been recently struck, although not yet sufficiently developed to report upon. - '

The Fryers Company resumed work during the past quarter at the 230 and 265-foot levels. A cross-cut west at the 265"foot level is being driven; they are 111so driving south on the lode, but have at present no crushings.

Rowe Brothers and the Duke of Coruwall Company are still working with their usual energy and remunerative returns. .

persever:J.nce Oompany.-'l'his company are working energetically, but their returns are very n\oderate. The Black Hawk Company have had no crushing during the quarter. , Sorensen and Company, Specimen Hill, have sunk ... new shaft 120 feet. deep; after driving 20 feet west, they

struck il riew reef; no crushing yet therefrom, but gold is seen in the stone, .' . , "

'fhere is a falling off in both the number of mi.ners and the amount of gold, the great drought contributing ill some degree to produce that effect. '

The Cornish Company are working from the upper levels and to 520 feet; they expect to cut the Crown Reef 20 feet further than the end of drive" which is 352 west of shaft.

Specimen Hill Company are stoping in the lower level at 540 feet, the reef being 6 feet thick. Dividends are paid as usual; the stone got in the cross-cut from the lower level is looking well.

, Ajax Company obtained 401 OilS. from 5lO tons at the 140 to l50-foot level. They are, stoping and driving in the lower level; the reef is 3 feet thick.

Argus Company are pushing on much the same as previously reported. ' Union Company are in the tunnel at Witfield's Gully, 663 feet. They have struck payable gold, a trial crush-

ing giving 7 ozs. to the ton., • Franklinford Company are erecting an engine purchased at Smeaton some time since.

TARADALE AND KYNETON SUBDIVISIONS.

Mr. Thomas Orwin, .Dfining Registrar.

The mines in this division have not improved during the 'quarter, yet the miners are hopeful and are daily expecting an improvement. 'Efforts are being made to obtain payable stone in the ranges on the east of the Coliban, also on the Belltopper ranges.

A claim on the Belltopper ranges has been recently taken up by a few local miners, and payable gold nas been struck. The last crushing yielded 2 07:8. 5 dwts. per ton. .

The United Kil}gdom Company's claim continues to improve. The company ~ve de-dared and paid a dividend of £70 to each of the 16 shareholders.. .

The United Extended Company are still driving for the Bame reef. _ , The Fenton, a claim that was BO rich five years ago, has of late become very poor, and in consequence

thereof has 8uspendl'd work. . The Tommy Dodd and the Glengonner companies have'also ceased to work. Each ?f the above claims, however, contemplate letting the mines on triblfte.

TARRANGOWER DIVISION.

,Mr. Robert Nankivell, .Dfining Surveyor and Registrar.

'fhe yield of gold has slightly improved this quarter, being 157 ozs. in excess of the previous quarter. The greater portion of the gold has been obtained from the following mines, viz. :-The North Eaglehawk United, the Charcoal Reef, and the North British companies. A party of tributers in the Nuggety Alliance' came on a patch from which 11 tons of stone yielded 143 ozs. 10 dwts., and have another lot of similar stone at the mills re!J.dy for crushing. It was obtained about 100 feet from the surface. being a portion of reef left alongside of a granite dyke by

. the original holders of the claim; it was a nice patch for the tributers, but unfortunately it is exhausted. Most of our mines are idle at present (with the exception of a few· tributers working the shallow ground), pending the making of new arrangements for the raising of capital.

, The Grand Junction Company have let a contract to sink a new shaft from the surface to strike the lode that was cut off by a dyke in the old mine, and hitherto has never been found south of said dyke. .

The Eaglehawk Union Company have started to put'in a cross-cut from the main shaft eastward at the 900-foot level, to cut the reef which had been previously followed down to about .850 feet, where they were obliged to stop sinking on account of a heavy influx of water, and having no means of baling it but by a windlass.

A small rush has taken place at Sandy Creek; a party working some alluvial ground came upon it small flat quart,z leader, from which a prospect was obtained by dish trials. A few tons have'since been Bent to the crushing mills and yielded 12 dwts, per ton, which caused the rush. ,The prospector was in possession of a lO.acre paddock on the opposite side of the road adjoining his claim, which he sold to a party of miners for £100. The party have sunk several holes, but can find nothing, and now consider themselves sold.

No water, was sold during the quart~r.

ST. ANDREW'S DIVISION.

}Jr. Alfred Armstrong, Mining Surveyor .and Registrar.

There is very little to report in this division for the ,past quarter; the only exehange for the better being the establishment of a company called the Warrandyte Freehold Gold M.ining Company for steam puddling at Warrandyte. The property is known to embrace several leads of gold which had been worked some time since', The whole of the mullock IS now being stripped to the wash to a depth of 12 feet, the latter being wound up to the puddling machine by the engine. The average yield bas 80 far proved remunerative, and will undoubtedly improve as sool] as the works are in sufficiently advanced state to enable the men to work to advantage.

At McCrae's Hill, Roddie's Creek, some very extensive alluviums' have been discovered by Messrs. Ewart, Lithgow, and Hampson. The mode 6f procedure adopted is to tunnel into the hill and 'prospect and work t\le various drifts containing gold horizontally and vertically as they arise. The formation is of a most singular character, con· taining pebbles, enormous round boulders, and sand drifts, intermingled in the most chaotic manner, the whole masS' being covered in the deeper ground apparently with a more recent rock. The wash varies in richness from a dwt. to the dish to a, dwt. to the load. .

, The promising appearance of. the reef lately discovered ,in the:C1aim of the Fear Not Company, has given no small inducement to speculate in what are called outside claims, which for some time have been neglected in this division. -Several parcels of ground have been applied for under the bye-laws, and also under the lcasing regulations, which, if energetically prospected, will no doubt lead to fresh discoveries.

, " .' IRON. , , With reference to the ironstone on the Traralgon Creek, the claim is being worked a~ a lower level. The sample of ironstone obtained is much better and heavier, than the sample 'already forwarded to the Mining Department for analysis.
