Governor of Maryland:Sir—The report herewith submitted is for the period from May
1, 1920, to May 1, 1921, being my second annual report, whichembraces the Forty-fifth Annual Report upon the conditions of thecoal and clay mines within the State.
The report from the various mining operations throughout theState show the tonnage to be as follows:

The above shows an increase of 513,795 tons during the year1921.
ALLEGANY COUNTY PRODUCTION
During the year ending May 1, 1921, Allegany County employed2,626 miners, 354 drivers, 569 inside laborers and 664 outsidelaborers,. making a total of 4,213 men, being an increase of 47 mencompared with the previous year.
The produetion of coal for Allegany County for the year endingMay 1, 1921, was 2,635,365 tons, showing an increase of 475,077tons over 1920. It also shows a production of 1,003 tons for eachminer employed during the year 1921.
GARRETT COUNTY PRODUCTIONDuring the year ending May 1, 1921, Garrett County employed
852 miners, 116 drivers, 191 outside laborers and 167 inside laborers,making a total of 1,326 men, which is an increase of 265 men com-pared with the previous year.
The production of coal for Garrett County for the year endingMay 1, 1921, was 789,069 tons, which is an increase of 34,668 tonsover 1920. It also shows a production of 926 tons for each mineremployed during the year 1921.

FIRE CLAY PRODUCTIONDuring the year ending May 1, 1921, the clay mines in Allegany
County employed 72 miners, 14 drivers, 43 outside employes and 20inside employes, making a total of 149 men, showing a decrease of3 men, compared with the previous year.
The production of clay for Allegany County for 1921 was 54,719tons, showing an increase of 4,050 tons over 1920. It also shows aproduction of 760 tons of clay for each miner employed during theyear 1921.
TONNAGE PER FATALITYIn Allegany County for the year 1920-1921 there was 439,227tons of coal produced for each fatal accident, while in GarrettCounty for the same year there was 789,069 tons of coal produced

FATAL ACCIDENTS
ALLEGANY COUNTY
On February 7th, 1921, Mr. Amos Martz, a miner employed byC. H. Rowe nd Bros. Mining Company, Inc., in No. 1, Barrellsville,was instantly killed by a fall of breast rock. Mr. Martz was break-ing off a room and did not timber his place; taking the coal fromunder the rock which fell catching him.
(\ Mr. Martz is married and is survived by his wife and three/ children.
Time of Accident—8:00 o'clock A. M.Time of Inspection-—li :00 P. M., accompanied by Supt.
C. J. Rowe.Nationality—American.
On June 8th, 1920, Mr. M. P. Thomas, a miner employed by theWst Virginia Pulp and Paper Company in Devon Mine, was killedby a fall of rock. Mr. Thomas was injured at 1 o'clock P. M. anddied at 5:45 P. M. the same day.
Time of Accident—1:00 P. M.Time of Inspection—June 8th, accompanied by Inspector.Nationality—Italian.
On October 21st, 1920, Mr. Charles F. Labor a miner workingin Stantons No. 1 Mine of the Stanton and Georges Creek Coal Com-pany, at Short Gap, was fatally injured by a fall of roof rock at 3o'clock P. M. from which he died at 7:00 P. M. the same day.
Mr. Labor was working in No. 1 room off the main headingwith Russel Clise and had fired a shot, Labor going back to see theresult when a large piece of draw rock gave away catching him.The rock measured 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 16 inches thick.
Mr. Labor was married and left a wife and one child.Time of Accident—3:00 P. M.Time of Death—7:00 P. M.Time of Inspection—8:00 A. M. October 22, 1920, accom-
panied by Supt. Stanton.Nationality—American. Age—About 22 years.
On May 19th, 1920, Mr. H. R. Hamilton, a miner working forthe Consolidation Coal Company in No. 3 Nine, was instantly killedby a fall of breast coal. He was about forty-five years of age.
He was married and is survived by a wife and five children.On July 31st, 1920, Mr. Thomas Skidmore, a miner employed
by the Consolidation Coal Company in No. 12 Mine, was fatallyinjured by a fall of roof coal and slate. Mr. Skidmore was injuredabout the back and hips and died several hours after the accidentin the hospital.

Mr. Friend, being a brakeman on haulage motor, had pushed empty car inroom and was coming down heading on side of motor; the brake on cardid not hold, allowing same to run down room and bump into moLor, frac-turing his left leg.

On January 5th, 192d, Mr. Edward S. Wilson, a miner employedby the Blame Mining Company as a Miner, was instantly killed bya piece of breast rock. Mr. Wilson was working in Patton Headingand was breaking off a room, he had loaded the coal from underthe breast rock and did not secure it with timber. Mr. Wilson wasworking in No. 2 Mine and it was his first day's work for this com-pany, the piece of rock was 2 feet 4 inches thick and 7 feet long.

DESCRIPTION OF MINES IN ALLEGANY COUNTY.CONSOLIDATION COAL COMPANY.
(Maryland Division.)

The Maryland Division of the Consolidation Coal Company isin Allegany County. It is the largest operation in the State.They operate thirteen mines and are working the Pittsburgh, or BigVein and Tyson coal seam. The general condition of the Consoli-dation mines is good and no expense is being spared to meet therequirements of the law and keep them in a healthful and safecondition.
During the year of 1920-1921 they employed 1,171 men andproduced 831,035 tons of coal, an increase of 8,391 tons.
CONSOLIDATION COAL COMPANY.
Peter Hoye - Foreman.
Consol Mine No. 1 is located at Ocean on the east side of theGeorge's Creek. It is a slope opening working the Pittsburgh orBig Vein coal seam, and is opened upon the double-entry system.
Ventilation is produced by steam driven fans, and the air cur-rent is conducted to the working faces, by overcasts. doors andbrattices. It is found in a satisfactory and lawful condition.
Drainage is very difficult, owing to the low condition of themine, and a heavy expense is incurred keeping it satisfactory. Itis obtained by being drained through the Hoffman tunnel.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 175 men, worked241 days and produced 126,918 tons of coal.
John Sluss Mine Foreman.
Consol Mine No. 3 is located at Hoffman, one and one-half mileseast of Frostburg. It is a slope opening working the Pittsburg orBig Vein seam of coal, and is developed on the double-entry system.
Ventilation is produced by a steam-driven fan, and the air cur-rent is conducted to the working faces by overcasts, doors and brat-tices. It is found in a satisfactory and lawful condition.
Drainage is most difficult, and it is necessary to have a numberof pumps and ditches in order to keep the drainage in a lawful con-dition. Drainage is through the Hoffman ditch, which emptiesinto the Braddcck Run at Claryville.

Timbering is found in a good condition, but it requires a greatdeal of timbering to keep the roof in a safe condition.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 136 men, worked242 days and produced 104,701 tons of coal.
Hugo Rempeel Mine Foreman.Consol Mine No. 4 is a slope opening working the Pittsburg or
Big Vein coal seam. It is developed on the double-entry system.Ventilation is produced by a steam-driven fan, and is conducted
to the working faces by brattices.Drainage is very difficult, but by the use of pumps and ditches it
is kept in a lawful condition.The roof is of a very dangerous character, owing to the age of
the mine. The timbering, however, is well looked after.During the year 1920-1921, they employed 100 men, worked
264 days and produced 66,659 tons of coal.
Richard Hawkins Mine Foreman.Consol Tyson Mine No. 6 is located at National. It is a drift
opening working the Sewickley or Tyson coal seam, and is developedon the double-entry system.
Ventilation is produced by natural means and is conducted tothe working faces by brattices.
Drainage is in a lawful condition. The roof is very dangerous,but the timbering is well looked after.
During the year 1920-1921, they employed 24 men, worked 182days, and produced 9,252 tons of coal.
Frank Williams Mine Foreman.Consol No. 7 is located at Lord, one and one-half miles west of
Carlos Junction. It is a slope opening, working the Pittsburg or Big\rein seam of coal, and is developed on the double-entry system.
The ventilation is found in a lawful condition, and is producedby a steam-driven fan. It is conducted to the working faces by doorsand brattices.
Drainage is by natural means, and is drained into the Oceanwater ditch. It is in good condition.
The roof is of the usual character, which overlies the Pittsburgseam in this region, and the timbering is well looked after.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 83 men, worked 242days and produced 67,793 tons of coal.
James Woodson - Mine Foreman.
Consol Mine No. 9 is located at the end of the "Y" on the mainline of the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad. It consists offour drift openings, known as B. C. D. E., working the Tyson and

coal seam. D. and E serve as a travel way for men, and B. and C.are used for haulage.Ventilation is found in a satisfactory condition and is producedby steam-drjven fans. It is conducted to the working faces and
throughout the mine by overeasts, doors and brattices.Drainage is very difficult, but is kept in a lawful condition by
holes being driven to the big vein and by the use of ten large electricpumps.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 157 men, worked 230days and produced 89,033 tons of coal.
R. L. Edwards Mine Foreman.Consol Mine No. 10 is located at Eckhart, Md., west of theConsol Mine No. 4. It is a drift opening working the Upper
Sewickley or Tyson coal seam, and is developed on the double-entrysystem.Ventilation is produced by fan driven by an electric motor. The
air is conducted to the working face by overcasts, doors and brat-tices.
Drainage is very difficult, but is kept in a lawful condition bypumps and holes being driven into the big vein.
The roof is as good as the average found in the Tyson vein andrequires a great deal of timbering.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 80 men, worked 239days, and produced 64,169 tons of coal.
James Darrow Mine Foreman.Consol Mine No. 11 is located at pumping shaft, above the big
vein of Consol Mine No. 5. It is a shaft opening working the UpperSewickley or Tyson coal seam, and is developed on the double-entrysystem.
Ventilation is produced by a steam-driven fan, and is conductedto the working face by overeasts and brattices.
Drainage is very difficult, but is kept in a satisfactory conditionby electric pumps and holes drilled into the big vein.
Roofing is good, except in a few places.During the year 1920-1921 they employed 72 men, worked 232
days, and produced 45,395 tons of coal.
A. C. Neal Mine Foreman.Consol Mine No. 12 is located at Borden Shaft, on the main line
of the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad. It is a shaft openingworking the Pittsburg or Big Vein seam of coal. It is developed onthe double-entry system.
Ventilation is produced by a fan driven by a Crawford &Chrimmond engine at pumping shaft.

Drainage is by natural means and ditches, and is drained in theHoggman water ditch. The roof is as good as the average, andrequires a great deal of timbering.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 122 men, worked 249days and produced 108,839 tons of coal.
Charles Shields Mine Foreman.Mine No. 13 is located at Old Consolidation, a village about one
mile west of Frostburg, operating a series of drift openings in thePittsburg and Tyson coal seam.
Drift No. 1 is ventilated by a steam-driven fan. The air cur-rent is conducted to the working faces by brattices and doors, andis found in a good condition.
The slope opening is ventilated by a steam-driven fan and theair current is conducted to the working faces by doors and bratticesand is found in a lawful condition. The roof is good and the tim-bering is well looked after. The coal is gathered and hauled tothe bottom of the slope by horses. It is theD hoisted by engine anddumped in conjunction with the output of No. 1.
IL, C. and D. are drift openings, working the Sewickley orTyson coal seam. The ventilation is produced by natural meansand is not always satisfactory.
During the year 1920-1921, they employed 82 men, worked 241days and produced 44,939 tons of coal.
Elmer Kight Mine Foreman.Consol Mine No. 14 is located at Allegany and is known as the
"Old Allegany Mine." It is a drift opening, working the Pittsburgor Big Vein coal seam, and is developed on the double-entry system.
Ventilation is produced by a five-foot fan, driven by an electricmotor. The air current is conducted to the working faces by ap-proved doors and brattices.
Drainage is by means of ditches and is drained into the Alle-gany ditch. The roof is of the usual character, overlying the Pitts-burg seam.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 26 men, worked 244days and produced 10,615 tons of coal.
George Richardson Mine Foreman.Consol Mine No. 15, is located at Vale Summitt and is known
as the "Old Astor Mine". It is a drift opening, working the Pitts-burg or Big Vein Coal seam.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 15 men, worked 284days and produced 5,823 tons of coal.
George Richardson Mine Foreman.Consol Mine No. 16 is located about two miles east of Midland.
It consists of a series of openings and is developed on the double-entry system.

No. 1 and Hoffman No. 3 are slope openings, and No. 4 is adrift opening. Ventilation is produced by an electric fan, and isconducted to the working faces by overcasts, doors and brattices.
Drainage is by means of pumps and is found in a satisfactorycondition.
Timbering is carefully looked after.During the year 1920-1921 they employed 99 men, worked 244
days and produced 66,554 tons of coal.
MT. SAVAGE FUEL COMPANY.
Lawrence Barth Mine Foreman.
It is located at Mt. Savage and is a drift opening, working thebush creek or rock seam and is developed on the double-entrysystem.
Ventilation is by natural means and is found to be in a satis-factory condition.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed nine men, worked247 days and produced 6,013 tons of coal.
COROMENDAL COAL MINING COMPANY.
J. N. Fitzenpatrick Mine Foreman.
It is located at Lonaconing and is a drift opening working thePittsburgh or Big Vein seam of coal. It is developed on the double-entry system.
Ventilation is by natural means and is found to be in a satis-factory condition.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 43 men, worked 82days and produced 2,334 tons of coal.
PEKIN COAL COMPANY.
J. Robinson - Mine Foreman.
It is located at the West side of Pekin. It is a drift openingworking the Pittsburg or Big Vein coal seam.
Ventilation is produced by holes being driven to the surfaceand around the outcrop, where the working faces are located.
Drainage is by natural means and ditches. The roof is of theusua] character and requires a great deal of timbering.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 33 men, worked 300days and produced 11,907 tons of coal.
ANDREW MACMANNIS.
Andrew MacMannis Mine Foreman
The Andrew MacMannis Company is located about one mileeast of Frostburg, reclaiming the old union coal bank.

ADAMS COAL COMPANY.

one mile east of Eckhart. It is a drift opening working the big
vein coal seam.During the year 1920-1921 they employed 8 men, and pro-
duced 4,010 tons of coal.
ALLEGANY COAL COMPANY.

Tacoma Mine is located on the west side of the George's Creek
at Franklin. This mine is a drift opening working the Lower Kit-
tanning or Davis six-foot coal seam.Ventilation is produced by furnace and by several openings.
The air current is conducted to the working faces by doors and
stoppings, and is found in a good condition. Drainage is by natural
means and is generally good. The roof is of a dangerous character
and requires a great deal of timbering.During the year 1920-1921 they employed 70 men, worked 199
days and produced 64,097 tons of coal.
EAGAN MINING COMPANY.
The Eagan Mining Company is located at Midland and is a
drift opening working the pittsburg or Big Vein coal seam. Dur-
ing the year 1920-1921 they employed 10 men, worked 140 days
and produced 7,000 tons of coal.
UNITED BIG VEIN COAL COMPANY.

United Big Vein Coal Mine is located west of Mt. 5avage It
consists of two driit openings, working the Pittsburg or Big Vein
coal seam, and is developed on the double-entry system.

Ventilation is produced by electric fan and is conducted tothe working faces by doors and brattices. Drainage is difficult insections, however, it is kept in good condition by electric pumps.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 54 men, worked 162days and produced 32,059 tons of coal.

The Maryland Coal Company is located on the west side of theGeorge's Creek at Lonaconing. They are operating several mines,working the Pittsburg or Big Vein, Tyson, Waynesburg and Free-Sport seams of coal.
Tyson Mine No. 1 is located on the west side of George's Creekat Lonaconing. It is a drift opening, working the Sewickley orTyson coal seam, and is developed on the double-entry system.
Ventilation is produced by a motor-driven fan. The air currentis conducted to the working -faces, by overcasts, doors and brattices,and is found in a satisfactory condition.
Drainage is difficult, but is kept in a lawful condition by ditchesand pumps. The roof is 'good, and timbering well looked after.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 262 men, worked199 days and produced 166,146 tons of coal.
CALEDONIA COAL COMPANY.

McKee Coal Mine is located one and one half miles west ofCarlos Junction. There are two openings, working the Pittsburgor Big Vein coal seam.
Ventilation is produced by natural means, and the conditionsare favorable for this means of ventilation as there are numerousholes driven to the surface and around the outcrop near the work-ing faces.
Drainage is by natural means and is found in good condition.The roof requires a great deal of timbering, being near.the outcrop.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 103 men, worked197 days and produced 85,681 tons of coal.

The McNitt Coal Company is located at Midlothian and work-ing the Sewickley or Tyson coal seam. It is a slope opening andjust recently opened, therefore, only produced a small tonnage forthe year 1921.
They employed 68 men, worked 214 days and produced 31,959tons of coal.
N. MD. COAL MINING COMPANY.Raymond Henry - Mine Foreman.
North Maryland Coal Mining Co., is located at Montell, work-ing the Lower Kittanning seam of coal. The working condition of

this mine is very difficult owing to the heavy grade but it is keptin a lawful condition. The coal is hauled from the mines to thehead of a plane and the inside of the mine and lowered 500 feet,from here it is hauled through a rock tunnel several thousand feetlong by electric motor.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 88 men, worked 165days, and produced 40,127 tons of coal.
THE BROPHY-HITCHINS COAL COMPANY.James Taylor, John Lapp . Mine Foremen.
The No. 1 mine is located at Midlothian, working the Redstoneseam of coal. It is developed on the double-entry system and iskept in a lawful condition. The roof in this mine is very soft andrequires a great deal of timbering.
The No. 2 mine is located at Midlothian, working the Tysonseam of coal. It is developed on the double-entry system and iskept in a lawful condition.
The working condition at this mine is very difficult owing tothe small seam of coal. It is necessary to take down a large amountof rock to allow the men to work the coal. The machinery andgeneral equipment of this mine is usually good, and is withoutdoubt one of the best mines in the State.
During the year 1920-1921 these mines employed 152 men,worked 197 days and produced 51,390 tons of coal.
MIDLOTHIAN COAL COMPANY.Wm. Superintendent.
Midlothian Coal Co., is located at Midlothian, about two mileswest of Frostburg. The mine consists of five drift openings, work-ing the Tyson and Big Vein coal seam.
Ventilation is produced by tatural means and is found to bevery satisfactory. Drainage is generally good and is by naturalmeans and ditches. The roof is of a dangerous character, beingnear the outcrop, and therefore requires very careful timbering.The timbering is carefully looked after.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 45 men, worked 157days and produced 26,482 tons of coal.

Stanton's Mine is located on the west side of Braddock's Run,one mile south of Claryville, among the Old National Road. It isa drift opening working the Kittanning seam of coal.
Ventilation is produced by a 16-foot fan, driven by steam,and the air current is fairly good. Drainage is difficult in somesections. The roof which overlies the Kittanning in this sectionis above the average, and for this reason the timbering is some-times neglected.

Potomac Valley Coal Co. Louise Mine is located at Chaffee, ona spur off the Western Maryland Railroad. It is a drift opening,working the Kittanning coal seam.
Ventilation is produced by a furnace and is in a satisfactorycondition. The roof is good and the timbering is well looked after.
During the year they employed 9 men, worked 172 days andproduced 4,286 tons of coal.
GARRETT COUNTY COAL & MINING COMPANY.

The roof is of the usual character which overlies the LowerKittanning seam, therefore requires a great deal of timbering.

During the year 1920-1921 they employed 28 men and pro-duced 4,954 tons of clay.

Ventilation is produced by a shaft being driven to the top ofthe mountain, and is conducted to the working faces by approveddoors and stoppings.
During the year 1920-1921 they employed 25 men, worked 275days and produced 16,516 tons of clay.
