MINE INSPECTOR'S ANNUAL REPORT, 1920-1921. 27

DESCRIPTION OF MINES IN ALLEGANY COUNTY.CONSOLIDATION COAL COMPANY.

(Maryland Division.)

G. M. Gillette, Md.

Harry Martin, Asst. Manager Frostburg, Md.

The Maryland Division of the Consolidation Coal Company isin Allegany County. It is the largest operation in the State. They operate thirteen mines and are working the Pittsburgh, or BigVein and Tyson coal seam. The general condition of the Consoli-dation mines is good and no expense is being spared to meet therequirements of the law and keep them in a healthful and safecondition.

During the year of 1920-1921 they employed 1,171 men andproduced 831,035 tons of coal, an increase of 8,391 tons.

CONSOLIDATION COAL COMPANY.

Peter Hoye - Foreman.

Consol Mine No. 1 is located at Ocean on the east side of theGeorge's Creek. It is a slope opening working the Pittsburgh orBig Vein coal seam, and is opened upon the double-entry system.

Ventilation is produced by steam driven fans, and the air cur-rent is conducted to the working faces, by overcasts. doors andbrattices. It is found in a satisfactory and lawful condition.

Drainage is very difficult, owing to the low condition of themine, and a heavy expense is incurred keeping it satisfactory. Itis obtained by being drained through the Hoffman tunnel.

During the year 1920-1921 they employed 175 men, worked241 days and produced 126,918 tons of coal.

John Sluss Mine Foreman.

Consol Mine No. 3 is located at Hoffman, one and one-half mileseast of Frostburg. It is a slope opening working the Pittsburg orBig Vein seam of coal, and is developed on the double-entry system.

Ventilation is produced by a steam-driven fan, and the air cur-rent is conducted to the working faces by overcasts, doors and brat-tices. It is found in a satisfactory and lawful condition.

Drainage is most difficult, and it is necessary to have a numberof pumps and ditches in order to keep the drainage in a lawful con-dition. Drainage is through the Hoffman ditch, which emptiesinto the Braddcck Run at Claryville.
