The all-new MINI CoupéMINI’s fifth modelAll text & photos courtesy of BMW Press Club

And then there were five. The next exciting chapter inthe continuing MINI success story has begun with thelaunch of the all-new MINI Coupé, the fifth uniquemodel in the family.Selling alongside the MINI Hatch, Convertible, Club-man and Countryman, the British-built MINI Coupé isthe first two-seater sports car in the UK brand’s longand proud history. It’s a contemporary and authenticreworking of the classic performance car concept, bringing MINI’s intoxicating blend of go-anywhereattitude and practicality to a new type of customer.

The MINI Coupé’s mission is a simple one; to maxim-ise the thrill of being behind the wheel. Keen driverswill be rewarded with a level of handling agility un-matched in the small car segment. Every aspect of theMINI Coupé – from the choice of engines and chassisset-up to weight distribution and aerodynamics – isfocused on delivering the optimum dynamic perform-ance. To prove the point, the MINI John CooperWorks Coupé has the fastest acceleration and topspeed of any volume-produced MINI to date.

The four-strong MINI range will go on sale throughMINI dealers from 1st October 2011 and MINI Coupécustomers can expect an exceptionally high standardof equipment including; DAB digital radio, air condi-tioning, park distance control, alloy wheels,  3-spokesport leather steering wheel and sport stripes on thebody work. A wide range of accessories and person-alisation choices will be available.

Striking styling meets practicalityKey to the MINI Coupé’s appeal is its stunning exteri-or design, unlike anything else in the compact sportscar segment. Immediately identifiable as part of theMINI family, it’s a genuine and appealing re-interpre-tation of the classic MINI design cues which havebecome so familiar on UK roads in the last decade. The car’s design language – the clever combinationof athletically sculpted surfaces, harmonious curvesand parallel lines – takes the brand’s styling in anexciting new direction, with a fresh and clear empha-sis on the marque’s sporting DNA.

The MINI Coupé is also an innovative new vehicle. It’s the first modern MINI to adopt the traditional‘three-box’ body structure, splitting the car intodistinct segments, the engine compartment, cabinand boot. While the overall length and width are al-most identical to the dimensions of the MINI Hatch, the Coupé’s overall height is 29 millimetres lower.

Page 3: MINI Register UK - Newsletter July 2011

Visually, this and the stepped rear end give the car amore aggressive, forward-thrusting profile. The lowerroofline doesn’t come at the expense of driver andpassenger comfort, though. Oval recesses in theheadlining provide extra headroom, perfectly illustrat-ing MINI’s ‘no compromise’ ethos.

The styling team led by Head of Design Anders Warm-ing has given the MINI Coupé a distinctive appearancefrom every angle. The most striking view is undoubted-ly the profile, with horizontal layering of the car intothree separate tiers – the body, the wrap-around glassand the eye-catching ‘helmet design’ roof. The A-pillarsand windscreen are sharply raked by 13˚ compared tothe MINI Hatch, resulting in a smaller frontal area thatgives the MINI Coupé excellent aerodynamic proper-ties.

Air flow is also optimised by the integrated spoiler atthe rear of the roof, and via a unique active rear spoil-er housed in the boot lid. It deploys automaticallywhen the car reaches 50mph – and drops down againat 37mph – but can be operated manually via a buttonin the overhead control panel. The Coupé is the firstMINI in history to feature an active rear spoiler, whichreduces lift at the rear axle to improve aerodynamicbalance and road grip.

MINI enthusiasts will immediately recognise the interi-or of the Coupé. The much-loved large central circularspeedo, chrome toggle switches and numerous otherMINI trademark features are all present in the two-seater cabin.

Behind is a spacious 280-litre luggage area - 20 litreslarger than the MINI Clubman - easily accessible bythe driver or passenger from inside the cabin as wellas externally via the boot. The large, high-openingtailgate makes for simple loading and the car offersexcellent cargo-carrying possibilities that will suit awide range of needs. Whether it’s for daily routine, funweekend leisure trips or more adventurous touring fortwo, the MINI Coupé is ideal transport.

Tried and tested enginesPower for the MINI Coupé comes from the latest gen-eration of BMW Group four-cylinder petrol and dieselengines. Outputs range from 122 hp/90 kW in theMINI Cooper Coupé to 211 hp /155 kW in the highlydesirable flagship MINI John Cooper Works Coupé.The recently launched performance diesel engine, the143 hp/105 kW Cooper SD, is also available and theline-up is completed with the Cooper S which offers184 hp /135kW.

Page 4: MINI Register UK - Newsletter July 2011

Fuel economy on the combined cycle stretches from39.8mpg in the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé to afrugal 65.7mpg in the Cooper SD model, while CO2emissions are as low as just 114g/km on the CooperSD. Even the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé emitsonly 165g/km. The full technical specification for eachmodel is given below.

Likely to prove popular with many potential MINI Coupécustomers is the Cooper SD variant, which offers thebest fuel economy, lowest emissions highest torqueoutput of any MINI. What is more, it will still sprint to62mph in under eight seconds and carry on to a topspeed of 134mph. With a BIK value of just 13%, andzero first year road tax, user chooser company cardrivers and fleet managers will also see its obviousappeal. No official figures are available yet, but theMINI Coupé is expected to have class-leading residualvalues.

Outstanding MINI dynamics and record-breakingspeedIn the MINI Coupé, engine power is converted into puredriving fun more directly and comprehensively thanever before. This car is the clearest illustration yet ofMINI’s legendary sporting DNA being transposed intoa cutting-edge new vehicle. The MINI Coupé provides

a complete re-interpretation of what a contender in thecompact sports car class should offer the driver.

The MINI Coupé takes the legendary go-kart handlingof every new MINI to a new high. That each of the fourmodel variants carries the Cooper name in its designa-tion indicates MINI’s faith in the performance creden-tials of its newest car. Traditionally, this badge hasbeen a sign of outstanding sporting ability and a nod tothe brand’s long-time association with legendary For-mula One designer John Cooper.

A level of chassis quality unmatched in the small carsegment gives the new MINI model the handling flairyou would expect from the brand. Designed to be theultimate expression of go-kart handling, the car’s sus-pension system provides a fun-filled, sharp and agiledriving experience. With a multi-link axle at the rear and MacPherson strutsuspension up front, the outstanding quality of thechassis engineering, steering and brake system en-sures confident control of the vehicle always, evenwhen pushed hard in dynamic situations. Comparedto the MINI Hatch the Coupé is also equipped withoptimised springs and dampers and an uprated rearanti-roll bar to further enhance its sporting credentials.

Page 5: MINI Register UK - Newsletter July 2011

Work to enhance overall body rigidity has seen a slightforward shift in the MINI Coupé’s weight distributioncompared with the MINI Hatch. This has major benefitsfor vehicle dynamics because the slight increase infront axle load increases traction, helping to ensureengine power is effortlessly translated into sporty ac-celeration.

A low centre of gravity, a long wheelbase measuring2,467 millimetres, and a front and rear track width of1,459 mm and 1,467 mm respectively also contributeto the sure-footed handling. DSC (Dynamic StabilityControl) is standard across the MINI Coupé range andmakes an important contribution to safe and agilehandling. In extreme driving situations and on slipperysurfaces the system can selectively brake individualwheels and reduce engine power to prevent a front orrear-end slide at the earliest possible stage. The sys-tem includes integral ABS, EBD (Electronic BrakeforceDistribution), CBC (Cornering Brake Control), BrakeAssist and Hill Start Assist. DTC (Dynamic TractionControl) and EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Con-trol) is on the options list but standard on MINI JohnCooper Works Coupé.

The optional Sport Suspension has firmer dampersettings and comes with uprated anti-roll bars front andrear. For a more ‘hard core’ racing experience, the

MINI Coupé accessories range includes a John Coop-er Works Suspension, with a 10 mm drop in ride height,ultra-firm damping and further upgraded anti-roll bars.

One of the main attractions of owning a new MINICoupé will be its straight-line speed. In he case of theMINI John Cooper Works Coupé, it’s a MINI record-breaking performance. With a 0-62mph sprint time of6.4 seconds and a top speed of 149mph, it’s the fastestvolume-produced MINI to date on both counts.

MINIMALISM environmental technology as standardAll versions of the MINI Coupé come with the brand’scritically acclaimed MINIMALISM environmental tech-nology as standard, providing exceptional powertrainefficiency. Features such as Brake Energy Regenera-tion, Auto Start/Stop+, Shift Point Display+, ElectricPower Steering and the need-based operation of ancil-lary components help to make efficient use of fuel withlow emissions. Additional features include innovativethermal encapsulation of the drivetrain, which shortensthe fuel-sapping warm-up period after a cold start. Allof these result in the MINI being the cleanest Coupéin the market place today. The standard six-speedmanual gearbox sets a new benchmark in the segmentwith its short-shift travel and precise action.

Page 6: MINI Register UK - Newsletter July 2011

A ready-to-drive weight of 44.8 kilograms makes thisthe lightest gearbox of its kind. The carefully consid-ered ratios guarantee unbeatable agility in mid-rangeacceleration. In addition, the MINI Cooper  S, JohnCooper Works and Cooper SD Coupé models all comewith an innovative self-adjusting clutch. Automatic re-adjustment ensures that the pedal feel you expect froma MINI is there to be enjoyed over the car’s entire life.

For drivers who prefer the simplicity offered by anautomatic transmission, a six-speed gearbox withSteptronic function, available with shift paddles, can beordered as an option for the MINI Cooper Coupé, MINICooper S Coupé and MINI Cooper SD Coupé.

The MINI Cooper Coupé comes with 15-inch alloywheels as standard, with a 16-inch version fitted to theMINI Cooper  S Coupé and MINI Cooper  SD Coupé.The MINI John Cooper Works Coupé is specified with17-inch, weight-optimised alloy wheels in JCW CrossSpoke CHALLENGE styling.

Advanced technologyThe MINI Coupé’s compelling driving experience ishelped by the car’s Electric Power Steering (EPS). This

electro-mechanical system is particularly effective atsoaking up steering shocks and other vibrations. It features speed-dependent power assist, reducing theeffort required from the driver during parking and othermanoeuvres. It cuts the amount of assist at higherspeeds to improve road feel and directional stability.

A Sport Button on the centre console is standard on allMINI Coupé models, pressing the Sport Button altersthe response characteristics of the accelerator to deliv-er sharper, sportier reactions and is designed to sup-port a more performance-minded driving style whichrequires more steering input but provides more respon-sive feel. The MINI Coupé’s model-specific braking system pro-vides powerful, fade-free deceleration under even thehardest pedal pressure. The vented front brake discshave a diameter of 280 millimetres on the MINI Coop-er Coupé, 294 millimetres on the MINI Cooper SCoupé and MINI Cooper SD Coupé, and 316 millime-tres on the MINI John Cooper Works Coupé.

MINI Connected

With the launch of the facelift R55/56/57 andR60 Countryman MINI introduced ‘MINI Con-nected’ a way of connecting MINI to the internetand social networks through the MINI HiFi sys-tem using your mobile phone as a modem.

The minimum hardware and software require-ments are the MINI must have either factory fitsatnav or the visual HiFi option with ‘MINI Con-nected’ software installed and an iPhone 3GS oriPhone 4 (Android, Blackberry, Windows andSymbian phone to follow) with the ‘MINI Con-nected’ app installed. The phone is connected tothe MINI via the USB port in the centre consol, once connected and the app started the variousoptions appear under the ‘MINI Connected’menu on the satnav/HiFi screen.

NewsThis option allows you to view RSS news feedsfrom your favourite websites such as BBC Newsor BBC Weather giving you up to the minuteheadlines in your MINI, the news feed sites arepreloaded onto the iPhone before connection tothe MINI.

Facebook & TwitterThis allows you to interact with both social web-sites usual preset replies which you edit on theiPhone prior to connection to the MINI thesemessages can include variables from the MINI’sown systems such as fuel range, outside temper-ature, music tracks being listened to, and satnavlocation, destination and ETA.

Page 9: MINI Register UK - Newsletter July 2011

Google Search & Google Send to CarThis gives you Google in your MINI allowing youto search the worldwide web for just about any-thing with the ability to call any phone numbersfound during the search, send to car gives youability to search the web on your PC at homethen send to your MINI for use.

MINIMALISM AnalyserThe MINIMALISM Analyser gives you a graphicdisplay on how efficiently you are driving scoringyou on acceleration, braking and gear changesat the end of your journey you are given anoverall score which is uploaded to the ‘MINIConnected’ website and you are given a rankingagainst other ‘MINI Connected’ users. The ana-lyser also gives you tips and advice on how todrive safely and economically.

Mission ControlThis is a feature which MINI introduced during2009 on the special editions Camden and May-fair produced to celebrate MINI’s 50th birthday. The system gives vocal messages on the MINI’ssystems and interactions with the driving con-trols, the system has three voices: Coach who isin overall control of the system, Engine whoadvises on the engine and drive systems, andfinally Environment who on the status of theenvironment and safety systems. When opera-tional the system welcomes you on start up, thengives you a status report on the engine andenvironmental conditions, the system evenknows when it’s raining or how dark it is using thecars automatic systems. The system also has afun side to it giving you your 30-60 times whenovertaking and giving you little snippets on MINIhistory and design asking questions ‘Why theMINI’s exhaust trim the shape it is?’ The systemhas to modes ‘Urban’ the fun mode and‘MINIMALISM’ which tries to encourage you todrive economically but can be a bit annoying withits nagging telling you when to change gear etc.The only really annoying phrase is the random‘BE MINI!’ Shouted by all three voices.

Page 10: MINI Register UK - Newsletter July 2011

Web RadioWith this you have access to virtually any radiostation in the world in just about any languageyou want with the ability to select the differentlevels of sound quality, just make sure you havea good data contract on your phone if you’regoing to use it on a regular basis.

Dynamic MusicFinally the biggest disappointment of the ‘MINIConnected’ package this changes the musicplayed through your HiFi to match your driving, giving upbeat tracks if you are driving enthusias-tically and slower more chilled out track if you aretaking things easy. The big downer was the factthe system can only use to rather naff tracksdownloaded from the ‘MINI Connected’ websitebut unfortunately none of the music stored onyour iPhone!

BMW have also recently introduced ‘BMW Con-nected’ which is more business and less funorientated, this includes the ability to read emailsand text messages also adding compatibility withBlackberry handsets.

Overall the ‘MINI Connected’ is a great system andthe iPhone app will be updated with new featuresbeing added from time to time, no doubt we shall seefeatures move between both BMW and MINI witheach update. ‘MINI Connected’ can be ordered as afactory fit option on a new vehicle it can also beretrofitted to any Countryman or facelift MINI fromSeptember 2010 build as long as it has Satnav orVisual HiFi options installed, it is just a softwareupdate so no additional hardware required. For thosethat have a pre-facelift MINI you can add MissionControl to any R55/56/57 model, it is a small until thatfits behind the hidden glove box. The more I use thesystem the more I like it and look forward to futureupdates, well worth the cost of retrofitting. ■
