As a Graduate Student

• Core to the research in the university

• Different from undergraduates– Mood, working mode, expectation– Learn how to identify issues, collect data,

digest and organize what you have, well present your knowledge

• Meeting was the essential activity when I was a graduate in Ann arbor

Individual Meetings in NetDB

• Usually biweekly

• Prepare meeting materials– A meeting note describing what to discuss– A paper in progress

• Be prepared and be punctual– If you foresee a time change is unavoidable, let

me know early

What in a Meeting Note

• Please conduct the field survey thoroughly– Get a global picture– List the papers surveyed

• Be specific about what you want to propose– Position your work (a title)– Justify what your claim

• Be cumulative in a series of meetings

General Advice

• Think three times and lay out the work in top-down manner before going into details or experiments – Your may need to re-position if no progress is made in one month

• Be meticulous in your English writing– You can correct 80% typo.– No plagiarism, write in your words even survey

• For master students: One international conf. submission• For PhD students: You should have your first paper done,

the latest, in your 2nd year.

In the Lab

• Be considerate and courteous to others– Human network is your asset

• Perform your assigned works

• Feel obliged to maintain its function and good condition

• Participate in its routine cleaning and maintenance

Review Papers

• Required for all my graduate students– Peer review is one of the most important practice in academic– Learn how to write good papers– The best way to evaluate students in my experience

• Get the main point of the paper– Evaluate its novelty, significance of results, impact to the field;

Do survey if so necessary

• Write a meaningful report with enough substance– Provide your specific comments; do not copy from its

abstract/text– Your rating should be made properly with respect to the

competitiveness of the conference

NETDB Paper Award

• It is essential to have an international exposure– It is to your good– Do not go to obscured ones

• To provide incentives to go for the very top conferences– In addition to travel supports– Full papers only– List revised annually or upon the discretion of your

advisor

• Effective for papers accepted today
