Box 351, Quitman, TX 75783 • 903-967-7450Political ad paid for by Bill Wansley, Bill Skinner, Treasurer, PO Box 351, Quitman, TX 75783
My name is Bill Wansley and I am the Sheriff of WoodCounty and a candidate for re-election as Sheriff. It hasbeen my pleasure to serve you as the Sheriff of this Countysince January 1, 2009, and look forward to being yourSheriff for the next four years. I am a Wood County nativeand a United States Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran.
I have been in full-time law enforcement for 32-plusyears and I have served not only as a Deputy for WoodCounty but as the Chief of Police in Quitman for 13-1/2years before being elected as your Sheriff.
I am a Certified Texas Law Enforcement Officer andsince the year 2000 hold a Masters Certificate in LawEnforcement. I have attended ALL the Texas Sheriff’sAssociation meetings since being elected and have a goodworking relationship with many Sheriff’s within the Stateof Texas and also with other law enforcement agencieswithin the State. It has always been my aim and goal forthe Wood County Sheriffs Department to serve you with integrity, honesty, experience, and professionalism.
Since January 1st of 2009, we have received two (2) grants from Homeland Security. Thefirst grant was for $200,000 which replaced two base radios, the vehicle radios, and walkie-talkies. The second grant was for a command center to be used for major crime scene andspecial events throughout the county. This grant was for $153,000. Neither of these grantswere at any costs to the taxpayers.
We also started an animal control program with a contract with the City of Hawkins andCity of Mineola through the Commissioners Court. This program is currently working great.
A Chaplin program was started for the jail and the inmates. This program helps when aninmates has family issues or a family death and need counseling. This too has been a success. Many churches work with our Chaplin during the week as well as on Sundays.
After taking office, we began replacing older vehicles with F-150 trucks. These patroltrucks have many uses-not only do we patrol with these vehicles but we use them to carrythe Sheriff’s Department boats and trailers to the four county lakes when needed, especiallyduring the holidays in the summer. These trucks are also used to haul stolen property back tothe Sheriff’s Department and they function better than cars on oil field roads and non-pavedroads and pastures. These vehicles are working very well.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Department provides training classes for the deputies andjailors. All classes are TCLEOSE and Jail Standards approved.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Department also works with surrounding counties inconnection with major criminal activity and drug enforcement.
The drug problem in Wood County is no different than other counties- it is a supply anddemand. As long as people use drugs there will be someone to supply them. The Sheriff’sDepartment is working the drug problem through thefts, burglaries, and public information. When we recover property that has been stolen or has been traded for drugs by individuals, and we make an arrest, this too is a deterrent on drugs. It has been said that K-9’s arethe answer. There are three K-9’s at Wood County Sheriff’s office when I took office-onewas donated by Winnsboro Police Department and one was donated by Hawkins PoliceDepartment. The third was donated by the military and was listed as a “reject”. One dog wasretired with medical issues and one was retired because of it’s age. The military dog was sent toschool with a trainer but never performed satisfactorily and later had to be retired. A fourthdog, which belonged to a deputy, was working very well, however, last year the deputy wasinjured on a work-related arrest and has been off work on worker’s comp. The injured deputyis the canine handler and the dog is inactive until the deputy is able to return to work.
Due to the economic times that we are in, budgets have been reduced and some timesneeded equipment has been put on hold. With the costs of gasoline continuing to rise it reallyputs a hurt on the Sheriff’s Department budget. Our case loads have increased over 1,000 callsfrom last year and a lot of this is due to the economic times we are facing.
The people of Wood County will have a choice on May 29th for the Sheriff’s election (earlyvoting is May 14 thru 19 and May 21 thru 25).
I feel I am the right choice to be your Sheriff for the next four years. With your help andsupport I look forward to this. Just remember - INTEGRITY, HONESTY, EXPERIENCE,AND PROFESSIONALISM is a MUST in law enforcement.

I love my work in dentistry, and I find tremendous joy from helpingpeople get through something as traumatic as losing their teeth andlearning to use and wear dentures, and then being excited with theirbeautiful new dentures and healthy mouths. I also derive deep
satisfaction from helping people who have had bad denture experiences.
