About Bhubaneswar
The history of the city stretches back over 2000 years. The area first appears as the
ancient capital of Kalinga. Bhubaneswar India, the 'city of temples', named after
Tribhuvaneswar, 'Lord of Three
Worlds', still preserves over 500
of India's finest temples, around
which the religious life of the city
revolves.
Mythological references and the
epigraphic sources describe the
area as Ekamra Kshetra and
Saiva Pitha. In 1936, the Odisha
(Orissa)) became a separate
province with Cuttack as its
Capital, which was eventually
changed to Bhubaneswar in 1956.
Bhubaneswar Weather Conditions
Bhubaneswar is located on the coastal plains of Odisha, south-west of the River
Mahanadi. It experiences typical tropical weather conditions, and succumbs to the heat
and cold waves that sweep in from north India.
The summer months from March to May are hot and humid, and temperatures often
shoot past 40° C in May. The south west monsoon lashes Odisha in June, bringing relief
to the parched environs of Bhubaneswar. July and August receive the maximum rainfall,
which may average over 220 mm a month.
Pleasant weather conditions prevail during November in Bhubaneswar, but December
and January face the chilly winds from the North/North-East at average speeds of 7
miles/hour. Temperatures drop to approximately 15° C during these months.

Dhauli
Dhauli hills are
located on the banks
of the river Daya, 8
km south of
Bhubaneswar in
Odisha (India). It is a
hill with vast open
space adjoining it,
and has major Edicts
of Ashoka engraved
on a mass of rock, by
the side of the road
leading to the summit
of the hill.
Dhauli hill is
presumed to be the
area where the
Kalinga War was
fought.
The rock-cut elephant above the Edicts is the earliest Buddhist sculpture of Odisha.
On the top of the hill, a dazzling white peace pagoda has been built by the Japan Buddha
Sangha and the Kalinga Nippon Buddha Sangha in the 1970s.
The Dhauligiri hills also has an ancient Shiva temple which is the place for mass gathering
during Shivaratri Celebrations.
The state’s first light and sound show has started at the Dhauli hill, easily identified by
the Shanti Stupa at the top.
The show will be held on all days except Mondays.
Jagannath Temple, Puri
The Jagannath Temple of Puri is a
sacred Vaishnava temple dedicated to
Lord Jagannath and located on the
eastern coast of India, at Puri in the
state of Odisha. The temple is an
important pilgrimage destination and
is particularly visited by devotees of
Supreme lord Sri Krishna and is one of
the Char Dham pilgrimages that
anyone is expected to make in one's
lifetime.

The temple is famous for its annual Rath Yatra, or chariot festival, in which the three
main temple deities are hauled on huge and elaborately decorated temple cars. Since
medieval times, it is also
associated with intense religious
fervor. Even though the icons of
most Hindu deities that are
worshiped are made out of
stone or metal, the image of
Jagannath is wooden. Every
twelve or nineteen years these
wooden figures are
ceremoniously replaced by
using sacred trees, which have
to be carved as an exact replica.
The temple remains open from
5 am to 12 midnight. Special darshan or Parimanik darshan is when devotees on paying
50 Rupees are allowed right up to the deities. Parimanik darshan happens after the
dhupa pujas at around 10 am, 1 pm and 8 pm. At all other times devotees can view the
deities from some distance for free.
Konark Sun Temple
Konark is a medium town in the Puri district in the state of Odisha, India. It lies on the
coast by the Bay of Bengal, 65 kilometers from the capital of the state, Bhubaneswar. It
is the site of the 13th-century Sun Temple, also known as the Black Pagoda, built in
black granite during the reign of Narasimhadeva-I.
The temple is a World Heritage
Site. The temple is now mostly
in ruins, and a collection of its
sculptures is housed in the Sun
Temple Museum, which is run
by the Archaeological Survey of
India.
The Sun Temple was built in
the 13th century and designed
as a gigantic chariot of the Sun
God, Surya, with twelve pairs
of ornamented wheels pulled by seven horses. Some of the wheels are 3 meters wide.
Only six of the seven horse still stand today. One can reach Konark either from
Bhubaneswar or from Puri. From Bhubaneswar airport Konark is just 64 kilometer and
deluxe buses are available at frequent interval during whole day time. Also taxi services
are adequately available. From Puri, the distance is about 34 Km. One can take a bus or
taxi from Puri railway station or he can also avail the train service towards Konark which
is not so frequent.
