    Mindset Research

    Dr. Carol Dweck spent

    30 years developing the

    theory of mindset.

    A mindset is believe a

    person has about their

    intelligence and

    abilities.

    This belief is highly

    contextual. It changes

    from subject to subject

    or task to task.

    Dwecks work found that only twobelief system developed inlearners.

    Learners either saw theirintelligence as fixed atbirthhence a FixedMindset.

    These learners see peopleas being born either smartaverage or below averageand that is just the way it is.

    In a growth mindsetstudents believe theirintelligence and abilitiescan be enhancedthrough hard work andpractice.

    They believe only timewill tell how smart theybecome.

    In a fixed mindsetstudents believe thatintelligence is a fixed trait-- that some people have

    it and others don't -- andthat their intelligence isreflected in theirperformance (Dweck, 2006).

    Students value hard

    work, learning, andchallenges while seeing

    failure as something to
