Keihan Railway Map Manpuku-ji Temple 1 The headquarters of the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism, formed by Priest Ingen from China. The temple has a Chinese charm to it. Highlights include the various places featuring the traditional swastika design and the prototype of a fish-shaped wooden drum known as Kaipan. The tenth temple on the 33-temple Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. It’s known as the flower temple because beautiful seasonal flowers such as azaleas, hydrangeas and lotus blossoms bloom on the spacious temple grounds. A monument here is associated with the Ten Chapters of Uji from the Tale of Genji and Ukifune (a character in the Tale and also the name of the last chapter, Uji Jujo). One of Japan’s three most famous old bridges, it is also known as Seta no Karahashi and Yamazaki Bridges. The part of the bridge that juts out toward the upstream of the river, called Sannoma, is said to be the place where Toyotomi Hideyoshi had water drawn for a tea ceremony. Every year in October during the Tea Festival, a ceremony is held where the famous mineral water is drawn. Founded by Hata no Kawakatsu at the behest of Prince Shotoku, this temple has such a close relationship with Ujibashi Bridge that it is sometimes called the Bridge Temple. A monument of “The Broken Stone of Ujibashi Bridge” is on the temple grounds. Visitors can enjoy the world of the Tale of Genji through models and pictures at this museum. Inside the museum, exhibiting feature a model of Hikaru Genji’s house, Rokujo-in Palace, an oxcart and other items as well as a glimpse into the elegant lives of the Heian aristocracy. One of the World’s Cultural Heritages, the main shrine was built during the late Heian Era. The shrine architecture is the oldest in Japan and has been designated as a national treasure. The Kirihara spring, one of the seven famous springs in Uji, still gushes on the temple grounds. This shrine is surrounded by an abundance of trees. It was built in the early Kamakura Era and still contains valuable cultural assets. It has been designated as an important cultural property of Japan. The fortune-telling paper with a rabbit motif is one of the popular items here. This temple is from the founder of Soto school of Zen Buddhism, Dogen Zenji. The Shaka Triad deity enshrined in the Main Hall is said to be from the remains of Fushimi Castle. The approach to the white dragon-palace-style tower gate (Romon gate) is called Koto-zaka (Zither Slope). This approach is a famous place for viewing autumn foliage. Naka-no-shima consists of Pagoda Island and Tachibana Island, located along the sandbanks of the Uji-gawa River. Here, seasonal charms include a row of cherry trees and cormorant fishing. The 15-meter high, 13-layer Ukishima Stone Pagoda, built in the Kamakura Era, has become a symbol of the park. This Sukiya-style tearoom was built to promote the Japanese tea ceremony as well as Uji tea. It was called the Taiho-an because it was made in the likeness of the Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do) at Byodo-in Temple. It’s a facility where anyone can enjoy a cup of tea. The Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do), which stands on a central island in the pond and is the inspiration for the design of the 10-yen coin, is just one of many national treasure structures and sculptures at this World Heritage Site. A contemporary museum sits on the temple grounds, offering many subjects of interest. The shrine, wrapped in natural beauty, is dedicated to Konohana-Sakuyahime of Japanese mythology, and a famous place for marriage tie and safe childbirth. The Agata Festival is known as “a unique festival in the dark of night” and is one of representative festivals in Uji.
