Gas Natural Headquarters.

AddressCarrer dels Pinzón 108003 BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.gasnatural.com

. The most striking feature of the 20-storey glass tower is thevariety and originality of its volume, which lends a completelydifferent appearance when observing it from the city, the sea orfrom the coastal ring-road. It has spectacular horizontal jut, which as a result of both its location and its architecturalsingularity have made it a landmark on Barcelona's skyline. Withthe arrival of the company in Barceloneta, this district now has anew public square called Plaza del Gas at the gas companyrequest, located on the site where the first gasworks in thehistory of Spain were located 160 years ago. The façade is clad in18,000 m2 solar clear control glass, supplemented by alow-emissive top layer, all provided by Glaverbel. This makes ahighly energy efficient façade combining excellent insulation (Uvalue: 1.4 W/(m².K) with the protection needed to cope withsolar light and heat (solar factor: 21%). Enric Miralles died shortlyafter winning the tough design competition.

. The Forum Building is a triangular measuring 180 meters on eachside and 25 meters in height, located within the triangle formedby the surrounding streets. It is considered by some to be an iconof the "New Barcelona ". However, local opinion on its aestheticand functional merits is deeply divided. It was the symbol of thecontroversial 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures and the seriousflaws that arose during its construction were widely covered inboth the Spanish national and foreign press. It has lain emptysince the Forum and is beginning to show marked deterioration. The building is structured around an auditorium with a capacityto hold 3,200 people. The seating is below the Forum Plaza level. The upper part is suspended from the triangular superstructuremeasuring 180 meters per side that covers the plaza, and rests on17 pillars. From it, the exhibit hall and the roof of the auditoriumare suspended. The exhibition hall covers nearly 5,000 m2.

Barcelona Pavilion.

AddressAvinguda del Marquès de Comillas 08038 BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.miesbcn.com/

. A work emblematic of the Modern Movement, it has beenexhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspiredthe oeuvre of several generations of architects. It was designedas the German national pavilion for the 1929 BarcelonaInternational Exhibition. Built from glass, travertine and differentkinds of marble, the Pavilion was conceived to accommodate theofficial reception presided over by King Alphonso XIII of Spainalong with the German authorities. After the closure of theExhibition, the Pavilion was disassembled in 1930. As time wentby, it became a key point of reference not only in Mies van derRohe's own career but also in twentieth-century architecture as awhole. Given the significance and reputation of the Pavilion, in1980 thoughts turned towards its possible reconstruction. Workbegan in 1983 and the new building was opened on its originalsite in 1986.

AddressPlaça Lesseps 20-2208023 BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.bcn.cat/bibjaumefuster

. Designed by Josep Llinas and Joan Vera in Barcelona, the JaumeFuster Library was awarded the 2006 FAD Architecture Prize, themost prestigious contemporary design prize to receive in Spain. The project was honoured for its delicate implantation in theurban context and the way it opens up new perspectives on theplaza on which it is situated. The expressive volume of theexterior and de abundance of its interiors is richly appreciated. Itis one of the most modern and biggest public libraries of the citywith an auditorium, amphitheatre, exposition room and specialkids-spaces. According to the magazine Descobrir Catalunya theJaume Fuster library, the Gas Natural headquarters, the Fórumbuilding and the Torre Agbar by Jean Nouvel are some of the newsymbols of Barcelona architecture. Even though this publicproject is highly praised, some critics do say that “the humanscale of the irregularly faceted library seems out of step with itsurban context”. Go see it yourself.

Santa Catarina Market.

AddressAvinguda de Francesc Cambó 1608003 BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.mercatsantacaterina.com/

. Wonderful Mercat Santa Caterina strikes a magical balancebetween local producers and consumers, contemporaryarchitecture and tourism. The redevelopment retains its originaluse as a retail food market. A huge, undulating canopy covers anexisting, former rundown neo-classical market in a large squarewithin sight of the gothic cathedral. The canopy consists of amosaic of 325,000 vividly multicolored hexagonal Spanish tiles setin mortar, "whose various colors recall a sill life of produce." It isa view that will be particularly appreciated by the residents ofthe neighboring apartment blocks. The roof is supported on threeprimary clear-span trusses that cut through, up and over theroof. But, from below, it reads as an organic timber assembly. Atthe opposite end from the retained arcade, an irregularlatticework of timber slats brings to mind an Indonesian villagehall - a typically offbeat Miralles invention and a reminder that heworked on this design before his death in 2000.

Fish.

AddressCarrer de Ramon Trias Fargas 108005 BarcelonaSpain

. One of the first public projects of Gehry is the Barcelona Fish – ahuge fish sculpture placed on Barcelona’s waterfront for the 1992Olympics. The monumental fish sculpture functions as a landmarkin the Olympic Village, anchoring a retail complex designed byGehry Partners within a larger hotel development by Skidmore,Owing & Merill. This fish sculpture was also a landmark in thehistory of Frank O. Gehry & Associates, inaugurating the firm's useof computer-aided design and manufacturing. The project'sfinancial and scheduling constraints prompted James M. Glymph,a partner in the firm, to search for a computer program thatwould facilitate the design and construction process, leading tothe adoption of CATIA (computer aided three-dimensionalinteractive application). The sculpture was modeled entirely in 3Dand delivered directly to the fabricators as a 3D model. The fishis a frequently recurring motif in Gehry's work, serving asinspiration and mascot.

. Set up by Miró, the Foundation is a dynamic centre where artexperts and the public in general come in contact not only withhis own work but also with the main currents in 20th-century art.Josep Lluís Sert created an open-plan structure where interiorcommunicates with the exterior, producing a perfect balancebetween architecture and landscape. The basic material isreinforced concrete painted white. On the outside, the marksleft by the shuttering are combined with prefabricated panels ofa granular texture, while the white interior walls create a restfulatmosphere. Other features – such as the terracotta tiles, thewooden edgings to the steps, are, like the colour, typical ofvernacular architecture in the Mediterranean. The austere yetpleasing forms of Sert’s designs are of similar origin: the centralpatio, the apertures and the shallow vaulted ceilings. Distinctivefeatures are the octagonal tower housing the Auditorium, theLibrary and an exhibition room.

Diagonal Mar Park.

AddressAv. Diagonal y Cinturón Ronda Litoral BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.diagonalmar.com

. It's design favours an interaction with the city. It is organised byfollowing a series of paths, which similar to the branches of atree, spread out in all directions. A type of Rambla, a mainthoroughfare, connects La Diagonal directly to the nearby beachcrossing the Litoral ring by means of a pedestrian bridge... andit transforms itself into a series of recreational tracks: to stroll, for skating, cycling, walking etc. A large area of water in whichthere are various fountains, the flow of water and the vegetationon its edges oxygenates the water. The presence of the watercharacterises the vegetation of the zone and the vegetationspreads following the direction of the shores near the sea and thelake. It is growing taller and denser until it reaches theadjacent streets. Small places are to be found on the edges of thepark. Places where a series of large ceramic vases join with theexisting vegetation, similar to the garden of a house. " Miralles -Tagliabue".

. The Umbracle (shade house) was part of the buildings designedfor the Universal Exhibition and was build in 1883, being usedthrough the exhibition as a pavilion. After the event the buildingrecovered its original function, and it is one of the few structuresthat still prevail from the original exhibition. Many otherbuildings from important architects of the time disappeared afterthe exhibition was closed. This shade house is formed of barebrick façades and wooden louvres to sift the light through theinside. The structure in the interior is sustained by slender ironcolumns, leaving a closed space that produces a suitable thermaland humidity conditions for the implantations of vegetal speciesfrom tropical origins.

ME Barcelona Hotel.

AddressCarrer Pere IV 272 28608005 BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.me-barcelona.com/

. Initially known as Hotel Habitat Sky, the building was sold in 2008to Melia Hotels. Hence, its name was changed to Hotel MEBarcelona. The hotel is thought of as a play of volumes. A cubicbuilding acts as a counterpoint behind the tower, which is arectangular parallelepiped cut lengthwise in two, with one ofthem half-shifted skywards. This rupture of the perfect geometricblock creates a movement of form and volume that bestows anurban sense on the insertion of the tower in the horizontal city. The shifted half-volume creates the building's reference signs:down, the cantilever at 25 metres height that acts as a gateway;up, the crest in the skyline. The hotel's skin is made ofmicro-perforated aluminium behind a glass curtain wall, whichgives the building the image of a bright metal needle.

Casa de la Marina.

AddressPasseig de Joan de Borbó 4308003 BarcelonaSpain

. This building was the first urban apartment block carried out fromstart to finish by Coderch and Valls. The urban context of thebuilding in the 1950s was not valuable property, namelyBarceloneta's narrow streets and Barcelona's industrial port. Forthis reason, Coderch and Valls designed an introverted housingblock where the exterior views are always conditioned by fixedvenetian-type blinds. The construction has affinities with theItalian avant-garde of the time, especially with Ignazio Gardella'swork. The building has a classic composition in three blocks: atwo-storey zocalo for commercial use, combining large glazedareas and small-scale masonry; a six-storey body of apartments, composed by vertical strips of glazed ceramic tiles and theaforementioned white venetian blinds, and the coronation with abig eave of wooden boards.

The client's wishes ofreached an exclusivity image for this project, located on anemblematic site, Passeig de Gracia in front of Gaudi's La Pedrera, drive to entrust with Toyo Ito the design of the façade and hall.Toyo Ito designs an organic façade directly inspired by Gaudi. Thefaçade consist of an 8 mm. waving aluminium sheet, on whichcuts are made to generate openings. . This building is part of a special plan for urban volumes definedby new landmarks for the city: the ME Hotel and office buildingHines D123, conducted by Dominique Perrault and AIA. Theproject consisted of the construction of a building the singularityof which is defined by its height and shape. A solid block ofrectangular proportions, divided in half and then displaced eightmeters forward in an overhang, projected out over the streetwhile at the same time creating a terrace, on the other side, withthe pure lineal form being stimulated by the overall balance ofthe building as a whole.

. "When I was a student at the Barcelona School of Architecture(ETSAB), Barceloneta was the subject of much conversation. Restaurants on the beach which later disappeared... narrowstreets, cramped flats, the clothes hanging out on the balconies, the shops, the artisans' workshops... and its people, who talked, and still talk, fast and loud. The project meant a chance to goback to the neighbourhood in an interested manner; it was nolonger a trip down there for fun, to discover its people, its bars, its smell... but rather a survey of the place with the object ofidentifying what would enable us to reveal its qualities and todescribe it accurately for the purposes of a project. Anattempt, ultimately, to explain a reality, to offer a new andfuller meaning to an architectural project, beyond resolving aprogramme or commission." Text by the architect.

. The design sets out to revitalize the square as an urbanpedestrian space, celebrating its archaeological site. The projectproposed a central stretch of grass on the same level as C.Canudaand the eastern side of the square. The grassy surface slopesgently down to the level of the Roman necropolis. Before thePalau Sabassona building, a strip of pavement with a porticoprovides a platform from which to view the tombs. A walkwayprojects over the archaeological remains, joining up with theprolongation of C.Duc de la Victòria, which connects with theRambla via a shopping arcade. This walkway houses a flexiblesystem of retracting sliding doors, constructed to control accessto the archaeological site. The outer edge of the square isdeveloped using the construction materials and street furniturehabitually found in Barcelona's old town. Grass, basaltic stone andCorten steel are introduced into the centre, however, the latterbeing used in walls to protect the existing trees.

. The project's main aim is to create a pleasant building for seniorcitizens, a space where they feel comfortable and one they canidentify with. The construction materials and finishes used aretherefore familiar, warm and comfortable, such as ceramic andwood. The building is designed to respond to the park, partakingin its language, materials and function; a vantage point fromwhich users can survey everything going on around them, both inthe park and in the street. The ground floor is permeable, with ahallway that runs right through the building. The building itselfrepresents a new entrance from the street, leading into the park. One of the park's esplanades, currently paved in wood, will havea new entrance via the building. The tiled roof slopes down thesmaller façades to the ground, creating the impression of a greatdoorway. The larger façades, with great picture windows andtimber framework, pick up the motif of the park?s wooden pavingand street furniture.

Marina Barcelona Forum 2004.

AddressPort Forum Sant Adrià de Besòs 08930 BarcelonaSpain

. A marina should be memorable for its activity rather than for itsform. Hence the clarity of its forms but also the soft curves of itslimits in floor plan and section; hence also the attention to nightlighting. The process began with the design of a series ofcommercial constructions without façades produced by tectonicmanipulation of the site. The roofs of the commercial premiseswere turned into public space, prime vantage points overlookingthe harbour. A few premises were built on the waterfront toexpand the commercial and spatial potential of the public marinaspace. The use of materials also reflects some restraint: thestreet furniture is simplified to the maximum; a single elementprovides a range of functions: lighting, seating, railing, table andhousing for ventilation ducts, and port architecture uses concretein generous, sweeping gestures. The weathering Cor-ten steelsuggests the image of a great ship washed up on the shore after astorm.

El Ninot Market.

AddressCalle Mallorca 13508036 BarcelonaSpainhttp://www.barcelona.com/barcelona_directory/monuments/mercat_del_ninot

. Josep Lluís Mateo has recently completed the remodelling of ElNinot market in Barcelona, a key market in the city's fooddistribution network for its well communicated central location. The architect's intervention centres on four key points:maintaining the impressive existing structure, improvingapproaches, redesigning the façades and roofs, and exploiting thesubsoil. One of Mateo's first decisions in this process was tomaintain the market's characteristic metal structure comprisingthree volumes, the central taller than the ones either side, toencourage ventilation and the entry of daylight. The approacheshave been reorganized, adapting the floor to the differing levelsin order to eliminate the existing unevenness, and bringingtogether the approaches in a unified space in the main foyer. Thefoyer offers users an overview of the market and access to thelower floor.
