liliANe lijN Cosmic Dramas30 November 2012 – 28 february 2013
mima is proud to present the UK premiere of Liliane Lijn’s Cosmic Dramas; three significant installations in an exhibition produced by mima. Liliane Lijn is long recognised as one of the most interesting and innovative artists on the international art scene. From the early 1980s, Lijn began to develop a new female archetype, using a broad range of materials, media and new technologies, referencing mythological beings and merging them with images from both nature and industry. Bridging art and drama, Conjunction of Opposites [Woman of War & Lady of the Wild Things], The Bride and The Electric Bride are ‘the beginnings of a consciousness of spectacular feminist contemporary art’. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication, in which texts by Althea Greenan and Guy Brett are accompanied by drawings and excerpts from the artist’s notebooks.

mima presents a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Jannis Kounellis. A painter, performance artist and sculptor, Kounellis is best known as an influential figure of ‘Arte Povera’, a movement that emerged in the 1960s. This exhibition features some of his most important works from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, and a new work made for Middlesbrough. His use of simple, raw materials such as iron, steel and coal, resonate with the steel and coal mining industries that make up the North East’s industrial heritage. Jannis Kounellis was born in Greece in 1936, and has lived and worked in Rome since 1956.

hoW We beCAme moDerNhistoric painting, drawing and photography from mima’s collection 15 December 2012 – 10 march 2013
Why does Middlesbrough have an art collection? Who gave it to us and what stories are there to tell? mima’s collection includes a number of works that pre-date the twentieth century. They offer a richness of subject matter and technique that adds to our understanding of where modern art has come from. Middlesbrough is a relatively young town and some of these works are older than the town itself. Covering painting, drawing and photography this exhibition is an opportunity to view works not often seen, and to gain an insight into the people who have collected and commissioned art in Middlesbrough in the past.

heritAge huNterSpresented by mima’s Creative Apprentices25 November 2012 – 10 march 2013
mima’s Creative Apprentices have been making links between Jannis Kounellis’ work, rooted in his past in the Greek port of Piraeus, and Middlesbrough’s own rich history. Together they have created Heritage Hunters, an exhibition of photographs, words and thoughts celebrating local culture. They have been taking the citizens of Middlesbrough on a weird and wonderful journey through the town’s heritage shaped by their personal experiences. visit Jannis Kounellis’ exhibition, then head to the second floor to add your memories to those on display. All the experiences collected will be uploaded to History Pin www.historypin.com/map/ to allow the world to see your images, tales and videos.

Haroon Mirza is a young British artist working in London. Untitled Song featuring Untitled Works by James Clarkson combines retro found furniture, disembodied speakers, bits of drum kit, wires and LEDs, in a work that hovers between sound and vision, sculpture and music, analogue and digital. Four of the sculptures in the show were produced by Sheffield-based artist James Clarkson later modified by Mirza.

Featuring works by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Paul Cézanne, Tracing the Century presents over 100 works from Tate’s collection, together with works loaned by artists. The exhibition highlights the role of drawing as a catalyst for change in modern and contemporary art. It has at its heart, artworks exploring the human body and the inner self. This conversation, between the figurative and the abstract characterised art in the twentieth century. Tracing the Century is currently showing at Tate Liverpool, and will be exclusively be shown at Tate Liverpool and mima.
