HARLEY-DAVIDSOCELEBRATION
"Serial Number One" is the vehicle clos-t to the very beginning of Harley-
avidson. It is the model that is at the start of a tourthe Harley-Davidson Museum, which is
cated at 400 W. Canal Street inilwaukee. The museum is regularly open
om 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day and until 8m. on Thursdays. There will be special
ours during the company's 110th anniver-ry, as the museum will be open from 9 a.m.9 p.m. Aug. 29-31.According to information with the dis-
ay, a 1996 restoration of the Serialumber One Cycle revealed that several
omponents had been stamped with the seri-number "1" indicating that they were
mong the first parts created for the firstarley-Davidson cycles. The cycle is
described as a "touchstone" in companylore.
Serial Number One is at the startingpoint of a company that was started byfriends Bill Harley and Arthur Davidson, along with Bill’s brothers Walter and WilliamDavidson. The museum has cycles from eachdecade on display, along with artifacts fromdealers and competitions. Along the way, visitors can learn when Harley-Davidson sig-natures such as the low frame and teardropgas tanks were first implemented.
The museum also shows how the compa-ny changed as America changed. Cyclesused by police and the US Post Office are ondisplay, as are cycles that were developedfor use by the Army during World War II.
Signs of dealers and from the past 110 yearsand advertisements fill the walls of the muse-
um.A section of the museum is set aside for
how Harley-Davidson cycles became part ofAmerica's popular culture. Replicas of thecycles driven in the 1969 movie "Easy Rider"are on display, as are movie posters and
album covers featuring Hcycles.
