FACIAL EXPRESSIONS Marjorie Ferguson and Trevor Millum
MARJORIE FERGUSON• Marjorie Ferguson identified four types of
facial expression in the cover photos of British women’s magazines;
• Chocolate Box: half or full-smile, lips together facing the camera. Presents bland perfection and no individualism.
• Invitational: emphasis on the eyes, barely a hint of a smile, head to one side or looking back to camera, suggests mischief.
• Super-smiler: full face and big smile, suggests a demand for attention.
• Romantic or Sexual: dreamy and heavy-lidded eyes, unsmiling or smirking, seductive.
TREVOR MILLUM• Trevor Millum identified these female facial expressions;• Cool: self-sufficient and arrogant, confident yet reserved.
Full lips straight or slightly parted. Wide eyes usually looking the reader in the eye
• Seductive: similar to the cool look but the eyes are less wide and the expression is less reserved but still confident.
• Narcissistic: similar to cool: a ‘satisfied smile’ self-enclosed and content
• Carefree: healthy and happy outdoor girl, often smiling or grinning.
• Kittenlike: a friendlier and more girlish version of the cool look.
• Maternal: motherly and kind, a feeling of authority but with gentle eyes
• Practical: busy doing something• Comic: deliberately ridiculous and exaggerated.• Catalogue: a neutral look, vacant and empty; personality
has been removed.
