Let’s ReviewA Common Mistake

Thinking that the number 2 in 32,586 has a place value of 2.

The 2 in 32,586 has a place value of 2,000.

Kate Hubbard
What if you just said "Place vs. Value" here. I don't want anyone to get tripped up on the vocab of face value.

The one thing that is confusing about this slide is that it looks like you end up with 55,555, not 50,000. I wonder if, through a ppt trick, you could have the 5 move up the chart with the arrows coming in as you go, with the value only appearing on the side as it moves. Do you see what I mean? How it looks now, I’m not sure all kids will necessarily make the connection between the values on the right with the 5s and arrows.
