ONE OF FALMOUTH’S MOST HISTORIC HOUSES GOES ON THE MARKET

Wodehouse Place is an exceptional property in Falmouth. Not just because it spans four

floors, has beautiful south-facing gardens and is situated in leafy Woodlane, but because the people who have lived in it have played such a pivotal role in developing the town.

It is thought that Sir John Wodehouse had the house built around 1811. He was an important figure thanks to his involvement in the expansion of Falmouth harbour and docks, but, clearly not popular with everyone, was once described as “a paltry, contemptible, close fisted curmudgeon”.

In around 1820, Sir John rented Wodehouse Place to Alfred Fox, who also owned Glendurgan on the Helford River. Alfred and his wife Sarah Lloyd had twelve children – 6 sons and 6 daughters

– and loved their town home so much that they bought the property in 1868. It then remained in Fox family hands until well into the next century.

Whilst Sarah was literary – she counted William Wordsworth and the Lakeland poets among her friends – Alfred was a shipping agent and scientific mineralogist. He kept his considerable mineral collection in his drawing room and the original French windows from which he could look out over his extensive garden are still there today.

Wodehouse Place seems to be a home that inspires owners to stay. Ceramic artist Shelagh Spear’s parents bought it in 1969 and she moved there in 1985, creating a studio in the basement to produce her widely collected artwork.

“The Fox family lived here for about 100 years and we’ve been here for 46,”

she said. “It’s a very special place and its setting is extraordinary. Although it’s in the town, the garden has a backdrop of trees that give it a countryside feel and we certainly owe a lot to the gardeners who planted for posterity. The house is steeped in history but, far from being a museum piece, it does have soul.”

Currently separated into five apartments, original period features include an impressive turning stairway with a domed cupola roof light. In addition to the artist’s studio, the large basement area includes a wine cellar, bedroom, storeroom and, because the house was occupied by the British army during the Second World War, a concrete bunker.

Outside, there is a lovely paved terrace with a pergola planted with fruit-bearing vines and kiwis, a lawned garden bordered with mature shrubs and

trees, an enclosed courtyard and off road parking for up to four cars.

“A property like this doesn’t come on the market very often,” said Millerson Manager Paul Gander. “It’s undoubtedly one of the most significant Regency style town houses in Falmouth and its fascinating history also sets it apart.

“It has been in the current owner’s family for nearly half a century and the Foxes lived there for much longer than that. That speaks volumes about its atmosphere, location and accommodation. I can’t recommend a viewing highly enough.”
