1. Tetolon® Fiber dome with hemispheric-hyperbolic profilefor excellent dynamics and off-axis response.

2. Acoustic damping material for very detailed, accurate highfrequency response.

3. CCAW double layer voice coil, wound on kapton former, for maximum power handling.

4. Double REN® neodymium magnet for utmost controland acceleration.

5. Rear vents for smooth, natural sound.6. Rear acoustic chambers for low Fs and flatter,

wider response.7. Non-woven, natural damping material for better damping

and accuracy.8. CCN-turned case, derived from solid aluminium,

for a mechanically inert, acoustically transparent structure.

The load in the tweeter dome rear part affects its performancesince the membrane can see a free space in the front, while thereis a back load due to the very small volume between central poleand dome. ML 280 has eight vents which ensure a resonance-freematching with the rear damping chambers. The volumes and vents sizes, as well as the special absorbingmaterial, provide mobile voice coil with optimal damping, generating natural, clear, dynamic sound.

When designing the magnet of a tweeter, it is importantto concentrate energy on mobile voice coil. The mechanicalexcursion of this component is very limited, but accelerationsspeed is very high. For mobile voice coil very good control, you need to have high magnetic induction in the gap and to usefirst-grade ferromagnetic materials. ML 280 tweeter employs highthermal threshold, REN® neodymium double magnet and very lowcarbon percentage iron, especially designed for it.

Air flows under the dome.

ML 280 dome has an exclusive profile, designed by HERTZ:its first section is hemispheric, the top is hyperbolic. The relation of emitting diameter, membrane height and surroundprofile ensures very low Fs without affecting dynamics at mid-highfrequencies. The fiber is Tetolon®, a mixture of cotton and silkin controlled percentage that, together with the natural resinimpregnating treatment, makes the component go beyond theaudible range, like all stiff dome drivers but without the troublesomeresonances which characterise this technology.

The original building features and the advanced technology applied to ML 280 make it unique. The colorless reproduction of mid-high frequencies and trebles requires sure, doubtless performance.ML 280 naturally carries out this hard task, counting on an unlimited power reserve. It is agile when disentanglingitself among the smallest details and resolute when giving the most powerful musical entries. This component iscolorless in any conditions, in favour of music, be it classical or modern, be it made of voices or of live instruments,or of performance recorded in studios. When it is used with reference woofers in two-way systems, it candecrease cut-off frequency down to very low ranges, where crossover point is regular and spontaneous.ML 280 is the best tweeter in terms of efficiency, linearity, frequency response and musicality also in three-waysystems, thanks to the state-of-the-art midrange and to very rich mid-bass.

The membrane is the only part of a speaker which must play. That is why utmost attention was paid to the elimination of anyresonance which might spoil acoustic performance. ML 500R face plate is made of first quality die-cast aluminiumalloy. It’s completely inert and allows the membrane to changethe smallest, most delicate sound tones into acoustic energy.ML 500R unique feature is acoustic radiation dipolar typology. Dueto the absence of a back load, the membrane can workin maximum symmetry and with ideal damping.

ML 500R is one of the very few isodynamic ribbon speakers with push-pullmotor section and membrane/magnet innovative geometry. The motorstructure was designed to generate a perfectly symmetrical magnetic field,in order to eliminate intermodulation distortions and concentrate very highenergy in the gap. What you get is a component with 6 dB higher efficiency than a traditionalspeaker, with excellent dynamics and very high dissipation factor.

If you want to obtain the same pressureyou get with ML 500R (93 dB 1W/1m) froma traditional speaker (87 dB 1W/1m),you need to use a four-time higher power.ML 500R bass response is outstanding:Fs is only 370 Hz and this is an impressivevalue for such a compact component. It makes its versatility and easy use unique.

Most enthusiasts and professionals believe that ribbon speakers can ensure faster transients than traditional conedrivers, thanks to their very light mobile voice coil. According to these parameters, mid frequency range is a verydifficult load, in terms of importance and of amount of information. ML 500R can easily carry out this task. Its frequency response can go from 700 Hz to 35 kHz: it is the flattest, widest response which a midrange can have. ML 500R is quick, dynamic, efficient; its power handling is veryclose to the one of a subwoofer. Its warm, natural sound can generate pure listening emotions. Imaging is real, sound levels location is definite, tridimensionality is very easily conveyed. When it is used in two-way systems, it has to be perfectly aligned with the listening point. Its responseis excellent in this configuration; however, this speaker performs at best in three-way systems, whereit is naturally integrated with woofer and tweeter, providing no-compromise, state-of-the-art systems.

1. Anti-resonant aluminium alloy basket for accurate, colorless sound.2. Acoustically transparent basket design.3. Cotton-injected paper cone for stiffness, lightness and dynamics.4. Exponential V-Cone®, for utmost linearity and dispersion.5. S-DWR®, butyl rubber, sinusoidal double wave surround for better efficiency and excursion linearity.6. Nomex® spider assembled on an anti-compression raised support, for full-bodied, natural sound.7. Lead wires plastic support with silicone; it can stand hard mechanical stress.8. CCAW double layer voice coil, wound on Kapton® former, for maximum power handling.9. Very big, REN® neodymium magnet for bursting dynamics.10. Copper-covered pole for flat impedance and smooth frequency response.11. Vented poles for maximum aerodynamic performance at the longest excursions.12. Lowered bottom plate for better excursion and efficiency.13. Rubber covered magnet for resonance elimination.

More than 35 materials, different in terms of paper fibers composition and impregnating materials, were realised, analysed and evaluated for ML 1600 cone construction. The selected mixture has good stiffness, damping and lightness. No other rigid fiber, composite material sandwichor obtained from metal mould can provide such natural, accurate, dynamic sound. ML 1600 “V” CONE® has a totally new, HERTZ proprietary exponentialgeometry. Its contact point with mobile voice coil uses a very light papersupport, which optimises mechanical coupling and insures very highefficiency. This new geometry provides very flat off-axis response, up toso-far unbelievable frequencies for a component with this diameter, no break-up phenomena and optimal damping, for rich, accurate sound in the whole bandwidth.

The design and development of MILLE components magnets employedadvanced finished elements modelling (FEM) technologies. ML 1600motor core is a new sized REN® neodymium ring, especially moulded for this component. This material uses an innovative rare earths mixturewhich provides a huge amount of energy and total thermal stability.Top and bottom plates employ high saturation level ferromagnetic material and are machined through a high precision process. The magnetic flux reaches a value which was inconceivable a few yearsago, providing excellent energy dissipation, very high efficiency andbursting dynamics.

Every element of a speaker contributes to sound reproduction. The mechanical resonances of a traditional basket, usually between 800and 1300 Hz (according to mass and stiffness), absorb precious energywhich should be transferred only to the membrane. A completely inertbasket was designed for ML 1600, thanks to the development of a self-standing structure and to the use of a light, damped aluminium alloy. This basket has new, unique acoustic transparency; sound is accurate, without coloration and resonances.

Page 15: Mille Catalogue 2007 English

The elaboration of an advanced set of dynamic measurements pointed out a determinant factor: mobile voice coil inductance modulation, derived from the winding interaction with central pole and gap. When thecomponent excursion gets bigger than the voice coil height, there is aninterference which heavily affects FFT, causing strong intermodulation. ML 1600 magnet geometry, together with central pole complete shieldingthrough a pure copper plate, provides exceptionally constant parameterseven with high power in the input and at long excursions. You can listen to totally controlled, accurate musical signal even with very high soundpressure and to firm dynamics in whatever conditions.

MILLE speakers have full, flat response and don’t needany equalisations; their location in the car compartment, however, may involve unpredictable variables. Car is oneof the most complex, difficult surroundings for musicalreproduction and demands the solution to various problems:the relation between direct and reflected sound, the mutualposition of the speakers in the system. In standard installations, the Left and Right channels will be at different distances andangulations with regard to the listening point. This location willalter the width and the phase of the perceived signal.MLK is the first to introduce a time delay control system, builtin a passive crossover: TAD® Time Alignment Device. By settingthe proper jumpers in the crossover, the channel response isimproved with regard to extension, sensitivity and phase, withthe same FFT for the two channels. The perceived sound imagegets in the center of the virtual stage; tonal accuracy getscolorless, clearer.

If you focus on the components technical features, you risk to lose touch with the most beautiful element of Millesystems: sound. A state-of-the-art installation, even if simply made in factory locations but with utmost attentionto fixing and vibrations rejection, will enhance musicality. The system main characteristic is clearly perceptible:superior tonal accuracy. Sound recreates the instruments tridimensionality and makes the listener feel as if he tookpart in the musical event. Colorless sound, controlled, full, solid bass impact, very good dynamic reserve whichperforms at best when the musical track involves you the most, for blur-free reproduction. ML 280 off-axisresponse is perfectly even, as well as its off-axis response; this ensures detailed, clear, definite sound image. Thanks to the filter efficient action, sound stage gets higher and centered, making voices natural and firm, singlingevery element out in the orchestra, easily recreating real, complete, detailed sound. MLK 2 installation in the car compartment is eased by the woofer standard size (thanks to its neodymium magnet,it is shorter) and by the tweeter with aluminium structure and differentiated acoustic chambers. Extraordinaryversatility is ensured by the passive filter and by its adjustments. Tuning is spontaneous in any car, since you canhandle the listening position you prefer, the response equalisation, the components efficiency. Simply by movingthe jumpers for the various controls, you can achieve the smoothest response in whatever conditions, for extraordinary excitement.

ML 500R Frequency response

ML 500R dispersion has a wider off-axis response diagramalong the horizontal axis. In order to best enjoy the extraordinaryacoustic features of this component, we suggest you install it as in the picture if your car allows it, with the horizontal emission axis oriented towards the listening point.

Like the two-way system, also MLK 3 canbe used in multi-amplification. By settingthe jumpers in the right way, you can getendless typologies of systems which employMLCX 3 filter. The use of an amplifier for everyspeaker or of a multi-channel amplifierdedicated to the three-way system enhancesacoustic results, since you can tune the levelsindependently through gain controls, you canhandle the power reserve of every componentand improve general performance, until youreach absolute perfection.

When having everything is not enough, the choice of a three way system gets obvious, necessary. MLK 3 is nota simple evolution of a two-way system, rather a complete system created to satisfy the most demanding users. The woofer is quick and clean whenever power is needed; it ensures accurate, full, solid mid-basses conveying, thus, the instruments stresses. The use of a ribbon midrange, ML 500R, and of ML 280 tweeter allows the systemtransparency and naturalness when reproducing male and female voices: their details and tones get lively in thesound stage center. The piano, which is extremely accurate thanks to its linearity, sounds sweet, even, natural, and the filter leads the components the way a conductor gives parts and scores to his best players.Installing a three way system involves very important considerations when designing it; yet, all effortsare rewarded by MLK 3 superb acoustic performance.

ML 28 tweeter was designed to combine space, light weight andperformance in every system with no compromise. The domedouble profile, hemispherical and hyperbolical, allows to regularizethe component dispersion and get a flat frequency response evenin the most critical installations. The fiber used is a mixture ofcotton and silk in a controlled percentage with a double water-proof processing; combined with a double neodymium and ironmagnet with a very low percentage of carbon, it performs a verylow resonance and generates a very high range, featuring amazingenergy, detail and impressiveness. The mechanical excursion ofthis component is limited, but the acceleration capability is burning. In the ML 28 motor there are eight ports that connect the tweeterdome to the rear acoustic chambers, creating the ideal dampingload to eliminate the resonances and extend the sound withcompetition dynamics.

PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS

ConstructionWhen building a subwoofer box, you’d better care for somedetails:

1_ Use a thick material as stiff and dense as possible;like MDF or high density multilayer wood.

2_ Glue and seal all the box walls using good qualityvinyl glue. Use more glue to seal all internal joints.

3_ Use damping material like AZ Audiocomp FONOMATon the internal walls.

4_ Always use the gasket between the basket and themounting surface, and use a criss-cross pattern tofirmly secure the fixing screws.

5_ Use at least one slanted wall in order to make theenclosure fit the car compartment, solve size problemsand decrease the box internal vibrations.

6_ Consider the speaker overall dimensions whencalculating volumes since it is not included in theindicated volumes. If you place the magnet speakerinside the box, add Total driver displacement to thevolume of the box itself.

7_ In the case of a Reflex (vented), Asymmetric Bandpassor Double Reflex design, do not add the volumedisplacement of tuning port to the total volume.Only add the volume displacement of the actual materialthe port is made from; for example: the volume displacedby the wooden board in case of a lamellar (slot type)tuning port.

8_ Leave at least 30 mm between the subwoofer backplate and the back wall of the enclosure.

9_ If you place the tuning port next to a corner of theenclosure, shorten it by 25-30% compared to thesimulation. This is because of the virtual extension ofthe port being close to the side walls. Do the same ifthe port design is lamellar (slot type).Whenever possible, we recommend you measure thetuning frequency with a suitable method.

10_ After finishing your reflex box, please test it into yourcar compartment by changing the port length and, thus, frequency, or the quantity of sound-proof materialinto it. This is the only way you can be sure you getthe acoustic results you want. By shortening the portor decreasing the quantity of sound-proof material, you increase frequency and get clearer, crisper bass;vice versa, bass will be deeper but less sharp.

11_ When using two or more speakers in your design, it isextremely important to use identical models, installedin the same type of enclosure.

12_ Power cables are very important because theydirectly affect the system damping factor. In theenclosed table, we show cable diameters, which werecommend according to length and applied power. The table refers to continuous power into 4 ohm load. When load decreases, the cable size will have toproportionally increase.

13_ Make sure the entire enclosure assemble is solidlyand safely mounted to the vehicle’s chassis.

Tuning

After you finish installing the enclosure in your vehicle,it is recommended to spend some time to tune the systemand its amplifiers. Remember that a small power amplifierdriven into full distortion can damage a speaker. On thecontrary, a very powerful amplifier with a linear operationrarely causes system failures:

A_ Adjust the amplifier gain control to make use of allthe amplifiers undistorted power.

B_ Set the cut-off frequency between 45 and 120 Hzaccording to the type of configuration used.

C_ If available, use the subsonic filter, setting the cut-offfrequency around 25 Hz.

D_ Avoid to use loudness or equalisers at low frequencies(<150 Hz): MILLE ML subwoofers have full, smoothresponse and don’t need any corrections, that mightcause the amplifier saturation or distortion.

E_ The subwoofer connection phase determines acousticresults and needs to be tested by being listened to.It might be necessary to invert it according to theconfiguration of main speakers and of other electronicdevices in the system. Make some listening tests inboth ways and choose the solution you prefer.

F_ You can adjust bass also by changing the subwooferposition inside the trunk. It is very difficult to know inadvance the results you will get in your car compartmentand you’d better make some tests by moving thesubwoofer box and the port and speaker emittingdirection.

FIND YOUR BOX

The ML Subwoofers electro-acoustic parameters are optimized for use in an enclosure. In this manual we have provided the specifications for two different sealedand reflex (vented) enclosure configurations for each model, which vary in size and performance. For each type you will find projects that favor size, for minimum possible bulk, or for absolute performance, to the detriment of the space taken up.ALL OF THESE PROJECTS HAVE BEEN DESIGNED, TESTED AND OPTIMIZED IN THE LABORATORY AND THEN PERFECTED IN THE ACTUAL VEHICLE INTERIOR.THE REPORTED CURVES ARE NOT SOFTWARE SIMULATIONS; THEY ARE ACTUAL DATA OBTAINED BY SOUND MEASUREMENTS DEVICES IN THE VEHICLE.ML subwoofers can be used in many other enclosure configurations other than the ones listed in this manual. With the help of a computer simulation software, you may design anenclosure that is better suited for the acoustics of your vehicle and your desired performance. There are some practical suggestions to follow when designing an enclosure. Please remember that:_ In the designs included in this manual, the box volume includes the displacement volume of the speaker itself considering it is mounted with the

frame/magnet structure inside the box;_ If you invert the subwoofer, with the frame/magnet assembly on the outside of the enclosure, you should subtract the speaker displacement volume

(Total driver displacement) from the suggested enclosure volume;_ The suggested designs, both sealed and reflex (vented), have been optimized considering the use of a sheet damping material like the AZ Audiocomp FONOFORM

on all the internal walls of the enclosure, other than the speaker’s baffle._ The tuning ports specified in the reflex (vented) designs are meant for mounting near one of the box corners and their material displacement volume is already

included in the overall box volume;_ If you wish to design an enclosure with several subwoofers, use only the same subwoofer model using the same enclosure configuration. Each subwoofer should

have its own separate enclosure within the single structure.

Warning: those who wish to find more information on building these enclosures can visit the following address: www.hertzaudiovideo.com,where technical files are available in PDF format containing all the tables with precise measurements.

ML 280 Signature Frequency Response Test

Parameters selection and quality control are very important to HERTZ production. Every component is subjectedto several controls along the whole production line and it is then selected according to strict criteria andvery small tolerances.

To satisfy the needs of the most demanding enthusiasts, HERTZ worked out a very precise, selective matchingprocess for ML 280 tweeters. ML 280 Signature components are chosen at the end of the production processthrough an analysis which evaluates their performance in the domain of time and frequency. The data are recordedin a special database which analyses their performance and couples the pieces according to their serial number.

The result is a packaging which contains a pair of identical tweeters, able to ensure state-of-the-art performancein state-of-the-art systems.

1_ Tetolon® Fiber dome with hemispheric-hyperbolicprofile. The 28 mm diameter, the dome heightand the special profile ensure maximumstiffness and the right linearity for flat, smoothfrequency response even beyond the audiblerange.

2_ The motor assembly special shape createsperfect field symmetry which provides startlingenergy. Thanks to the use of a double REN®

Neodymium magnet, ML 280 can maintainmobile voice coil movement linearity even atextreme excursions, ensuring extraordinaryenergy for state-of-the-art performance.

3_ The upper pole, covered by a pure copper shortcircuit ring, generates an anti-inductive effect, flattening impedance. CCAW copper coveredaluminium wire voice coil makes this mobilevoice coil very light, yet stiff. These elementsact together, providing the best SPL valuesand the best response at very high frequencies.

4_ Cooling and decompression radial ducts.Designed in order to enhance heat dissipationand to avoid compression under the dome, they optimise mobile voice coil damping andresonance. The holes special geometry and therear resonance chamber provide natural, linearsound by eliminating all noise.

5_ Non-woven natural damping material. The one used under the dome differs fromthe one employed for resonance chambers;damping is increased, as well as the tweeterdynamics.

6_ The main housing and the rear chambers areobtained from solid aluminium. The precisionworking ensures a totally inert structure whichimproves the component performance andchanges the smallest, most delicate soundtones into acoustic energy.

7_ Acoustic chambers with different loading. The tweeter can be used in differentconfigurations, since it is possible to choosethe best Q for the system by changing the rearacoustic chamber. The chambers simulatesealed box configuration; they are filled withnatural, non-woven absorbing material for thecomponent best damping. The small chamberincreases Q factor and makes the tweeterslope sharper; the big one makes slopesmoother at lower frequencies.

28_ The V-CONE is applied to a Polypropylenemembrane stiffened with mineral dusts. The exponential profile without dust covergets very close to the ideal one andeliminates break-ups to provide the maximum undistorted performance.

29_ Power transfer is carried out through screwterminals that accept peeled cables up to 5 AWG. The terminal blocks are inside themounting surface and are arranged to allowthe linear connection of the cable. Mounting on elastic support preserves the mechanicalintegrity, protecting the nerve center of thecomponent from the vibrations that the sub can generate.

30_ Reference in design: power and harmony in amix of sharp lines and widely curved profiles. The anti-resonant aluminium alloy basketfeatures five low incidence spokes and offersthe minimum back radiation resistance, eliminating every distortion due to acousticcompression. The self-standing geometry of the structure contributes to total mechanicaldamping, performing a perfectly transparentsound.

31_ Foam surround and Conex® spider with highthermal and mechanical linearity. Like competition cars suspensions, theseelements must stand the most extremeconditions: ensuring the utmost stability andsymmetry at the highest excursions forastonishing impact and amazing extension to the low range.

32_ The “Symmetrical Shape” central poleaddresses the external lines increasing themagnetic flux density and perceptiblydecreasing the field asymmetry distortion. An aluminium rounded ring inside the motorcuts the inductance modulation at the highestexcursions, for a harder, deeper, clearer bass.

33_ Basic design and care for details. The gasket is designed to allow both possible mountings. In the traditional position a rubber gasketensures a perfect hermetical seal and theinserts, imitating the spokes lines, protect and cover the subwoofer fixing screws. Whenthe sub is used with the magnet visible, thegasket can be mounted upside down in orderto finish off the basket nicely.

34_ Aluminium die-cast protective grille. The gaskethousings and the inserts covering the basketedge are pre-set to accommodate theprotection grille base which becomes anintegral part of the speaker without increasingthe subwoofer external size.

35_ The dual layer mobile voice coil with coppercovered aluminium wire (CCAW), the subwooferthrobbing heart, is wound round a carbon fibersupport, stiff and light to ensure very highmechanical Qs, transferring the energy to thecone with amazing efficiency. The support isset on the cone bottom through a self-referringsystem, for a mechanically perfect mounting.

36_ The spider support contributes to totalmechanical performance. Made to improve thedispersion of the heat generated by the coiland to reduce the compression below thespider, it favors the thermal exchange with theoutside increasing the power performance.

37_ Extremely big double high flow density magnet.Only the exclusive double magnetization cycle, optimized in times and tensions, allows togenerate a force factor which can control themobile equipment with the right energy, for anexcellent transient response.

38_ The combination of flared port with radial holesin the central pole in the bottom plate carriesthe air compressed by the cone movementdirectly to the mobile voice coil and outside the magnet assembly, producing a 30% fall of the speaker operation temperature. The improvement of the air flows inside themotor, with this peculiar channel geometry, creates a forced ventilation circuit thatdrastically reduces the dynamic compression, raising the applicable power over the top.

39_ High current lead wire integrated in the spider. The conductors which transfer the current tothe voice coil are not subject to mechanicalstress; so they generate electrical andmechanical safety, and furthermore grant asilent operation even at the highest excursions.

40_ Like in motorbikes chassis, the anti-resonantaluminium carter covering the magnet closesthe basket in a unique configuration, performing aesthetical and mechanicalfunctions. The stiffer structure contributes toeliminate the resonances induced in thesubwoofer bearing system.
