President’s Comment
The Chapter August meeting was held at Oakland Manor. The food and the service were excellent. ―Thanks‖
to the management and staff of the Manor. The guest speaker was Mr. Michael Pape. Mr. Pape is the Legisla-
tive Assistant to Representative Edward Whitfield of the 1st District in KY. Mr.
Pape gave an excellent presentation on the current budget situation followed by a
question and answer session. Our ―thanks‖ to Mr. Pape for taking the time to visit
us.
Our congratulations go out to the five students of the Ft. Campbell
Chapter area that received scholarships from MOAA. Those that received the
scholarships are: Jared Cornelius of Clarksville, Maria James of Murray, KY.,
Melina and Nechelle Dolata of Clarksville, and Nicole Fauth of Clarksville. We
wish the best for these students in the upcoming school year.
The Chapter scholarship is in the final stage of getting sent off to
MOAA. The final approval was given by the Executive Committee at the August meeting. The Executive
Committee agreed to name the scholarship The Warren and Nancy Evans Scholarship. Warren and Nancy
have been very active in the Chapter for many years and this is our way of showing our gratitude for their
service.
Congress will be back in session after the Labor Day holiday. Who knows what will happen be-
tween then and the end of the year? There are several key budget issues to be tackled. So all I can suggest is
―Stay Tuned‖.

Auxiliary MOAA members
There is been interest shown for reviving our group luncheons. A
while back, We on occasion as a Auxiliary MOAA Members Group
came together at various in Clarksville others in Hopkinsville and in
several other places such as the Schoolhouse Tea Room in Adams,
Olive Garden Clarksville, Robert Penn Warren's birthplace and
Guthrie. If we went out of town, we would meet at a central location
and carpool. We have an extensive list of other places. In addition,
If you have not made your voice hear, now is the time to join the chorus.
Members Speak Out on Retirement Reform
MOAA relies on members to help get our message through to Congress and the administration using grassroots advocacy. In recent
months MOAA members have more than lived up to that roll generating over a quarter of a million messages to Capitol Hill, the
Pentagon, and the White House.
This week, the Army Times printed a letter to the editor (second from the top) from MOAA President VADM Norb Ryan blasting
proposals to severely cut retirement benefits for future servicemembers. He reminded readers of how less drastic changes to the mili-
tary retirement system in the 1980s and 90s proved devastating to retention and readiness.
Our members have echoed this sentiment on military retirement by generating more than 200,000 messages to their elected officials
on this issue alone in the past two months.
Members sent an additional 50,000 messages aimed at protecting against COLA and commissary cuts in the impending budget
crunch.
It's great to see so many MOAA members pitching in to help preserve crucial military benefits that are essential to offset the chal-
lenges and sacrifice inherent in a military career, but we need to keep it up.
Please continue to send your elected officials MOAA-suggested messages reminding them of the importance of military retirement
and other military-unique benefits, and ask your friends to do the same. We're entering an era of potentially massive budget cuts and
we'll need every member to share their voice to protect earned benefits and preserve the all volunteer force. MOAA Legislative Update [[email protected]]

Legislative Affairs (MOAA Legislative Update )
Chained CPI: It's Not a Technicality; It's a COLA Cut
If you receive an inflation-adjusted annuity from the federal government, you should be paying at-
tention when you hear the term "chained CPI" being discussed.
One of the most frequently mentioned options by most parties at the deficit-cutting table is a
―technical correction‖ to the CPI called the ―chained CPI.‖ It‘s gone under the radar for the most
part. But if implemented, it could affect the lives of almost all Americans — especially service
members, federal civilian employees, Social Security recipients, and other retirees and survivors.
COLA Dips a Little
Inflation dropped 0.2%
in June, marking the
first time in ninth
months the Consumer
Price Index hasn‘t
risen. With four
months left in the fiscal
year, cumulative infla-
tion stands at 3.2%.
Check out the trend for
yourself on MOAA's
COLA Watch web-
page.
Alert:
Tennessee MOAA Chapter & Council Bi-Annual Convention
is scheduled for 14-16 October 2011 at Arnold Air Force
Base. This is a beautiful site to meet and there will be tours of
the Massive test facilities. Start planning now and when you
have locked in your plans, RSVP to the 1st Vice President (or
an appointed contact person) to scheduled for the tours.
The August meeting consisted of a great meal and fellowship and
well as lively discussions and good spirit. If you missed it you
really missed something enjoyable, entertaining and educational.
