Ambient temperature. The temperature of the air or liquidsurrounding any object, neglecting small localized variations.Characteristic. The overload intermption time, normallyexpressed in percent of overload and time in seconds, minutesor hours.
Characteristic A - Normal (normal interrupting capacity).Characteristic B - Time delay.Characteristic C - Normal (very high interrupting capacity).
Current limiter. A current limiter has the capability to safelyinterrupt all available currents within its interrupting capacityand within its current limiting range limits the current to avalue less than the specified maximum peak let thru current.Current rating. The designated rms (root mean square) alter-nating current or direct current which the fuse will carrycontinuously.Interrupting capacity. Specifies the maximum value of currentwhich the fuse 1s capable of interrupting (without physicaldamage) under short circuit conditions, for a specified voltagerating and frequency.Resistance. Cold resistance is the ohmic value as measuredbetween the terminals of the fuse at 10 percent or less ofthe rated current.
Temperature derating. The effect of ambient temperature on fuserating.Voltage rating. The maximum voltage at which the fuse is designedto operate for a specified interrupting capacity.
4. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Choice of fuses, fuseholders and associated hardware. The equipmentdesigner should consider the following characteristics and parameters in choosingthe most suitable fuses and fuseholders:
(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)(f)(&)(h)(i)(j)
Application (type of fuse).Type of circuit Interruption.Requirements for interrupt indication.Electrical data.Type of terminals.Shock, vibration and environmental capabilities.Mechancial data and safety features.Panel layout.Quality.Economics.
4.1.1 Acquisition information. titer a preliminary selection of thedesired fuse, fuseholder, or associated hardware has been made, referenceshould be made to the applicable specification and qualified products list.Acquisition documents shall reference the applicable specification sheet orMS sheet, and the complete part number, style or type designation.

4.2 Conflict of requirements. After selection of a particular fuse, fuseholder, or associated hardware from this document, the design engineershould refer to the applicable specification sheet or MS sheet for any technical
—
conflicts. In the event of a conflict between the technical requirements de-scribed in this standard and those of the applicable specification sheet or MSsheet, the latter shall govern.
4.3 Criteria for inclusion in this standard. The criteria for theinclusion of fuses, fuseholders, and associated hardware in this standard areas follows:
(a) The fuee, fuseholder, and associated hardware shall be the besttype available for general use in military equipment
(b) Fuses, fuseholders, and associated hardware shall be covered byfederal or military specifications (see 2.1).
5. DETAILED REQUIREMENTS
5.1 The detailed requirements for standard fuse, fuseholders, and as80-ciated hardware are contained in the applicable specification, and in theapplicable section of this standard.
