An architecture in which we: provide access and protect privacy

Provide access, yet protect privacy

We should carefully determine which information is truly private, and aggressively share that which is not.

By managing the sharing of data in a shared community we can leverage resources in a way that no single department can. Our goals in this should be to:

• Improve service• Reduce costs • Reduce redundancy and

duplication• Reduce risks

An architecture in which we: enable with tools and standards

Tools and Standards:

We can improve service and satisfaction by providing mechanisms to share documents and information between people’s desktops - both inside and outside the enterprise.

We can reduce costs and improve effectiveness by providing a neutral ground where information is translated into a common denominator, without forcing departments to discard their internal tools.

We can provide guidance to departments who are looking for a way to avoid reinventing the wheel.

An architecture in which we: participate in the wider world

Connect to the Internet:

We can bring new resources and jobs to our organization by joining our community with others

We can gain earlier awareness of opportunities, participate in more successful collaborations, and enjoy better project performance by lowering the barriers between ourselves and others

We can improve the productivity of our employees and leaders by providing broader access to research and colleagues

An architecture in which we: provide connectivity within the enterprise

Provide connections within the enterprise:

We can improve service and productivity, by providing physical connections between employees, to share tools and resources

We can build shared culture - by presenting a consistent, mission-driven view of this information community to employees, leaders and customers

We can reduce system development and support costs by aggressively responding to the explosive arrival of the World Wide Web as the “universal software” on everybody’s desktop.

An architecture in which we: reengineer the processes of our organizations

Reengineering processes:

• We can apply information technology to reduce costs, and improve service to customers by reengineering business processes, eg:

• Activity reporting• Billing, collecting• Collecting and organizing

information• Processing service-

requests, orders• Informing• Scheduling

An architecture in which we: govern the common ground

Information Management Principles

The old ones no longer apply

Management

Old rule - CIO. New rule - community,

leadership

Data

Old rule - silos of data. New rule, data

communities

People

Old rule - manage the skills inventory. New

rule - look for leaders, get out of their way.

Standards

Old rule - look for standard tools across the

enterprise. New rule - look for common

ground.
