Joseph Kirsch on ARROW Amateur RacingOf all the County Fairs held in Wisconsin in 2009, the Richland County Fair

was unique in that it was the only one conducting actual horse racing, with ridersgalloping around the track on horse back at full speed! The races were conductedby ARROW (Amateur Racehorse Representatives of Wisconsin) on September12 t h and proved once again to be a real crowd pleaser for the spectators in thegrand stand and a thrill for the amateur riders, and the payout prize moneytotaling about $1500 was not bad either!

I am certain the horses loved it, for the Drinkers of the Wind were born torun! Of the two races that were conducted, one was forPurebred Arabians and the 2 nd was an open race for anybreed, registered or not, although, oddly enough they allended up being Half-Arabians. I rode my trusty geldingCzarming Gallant in the Purebred race. He is a 6 year old14.2h straight Polish Arabian. He is proof that a smallhorse with heart and desire can be a winner for we won the

race this year as he haswon 3 ARROW races sofar!I trained him myself,conditioning him in my back fields as I did formy Half Arab that ran and won in the secondrace. His name is Nasdac, he is a 9 year old halfTrakhener and was ridden by Jennifer Dins, anexperienced Dressage rider. This was her firstexperience racing at a full gallop, and she loved.Of course winning made her feel even better.

The other horses running were greatcompetition. 2 nd place winners were Jason Fullerton riding his beautiful purebredmare Esti, Jason had trained her himself and rode her too, she too is a shorty, Ibelieve 14.1h give or take. The Half Arab that ran to second place in that race isowned and trained by Pamela Fullerton, Jason mom. Thundar is his name and heis a mighty Arabian/Bashkir Curly mix. He came in a real close second and ranhis heart out. Thundar has been a pony horse for years and has never had thechance to run all the way around the track wide open, he LOVED it! And guesswhat…he is 18 years old! How’s that for proof of what they love to do.

3rd place race horses were both owned/trained and ridden by the same gal,Juliee Wendland. Sing Song Seranad is her purebred mare and “Acorn” is her

has always wanted to have an experience like this. She is a mother of four and nostranger to new challenges. She graduated from Viterbo college this year with adegree! She had great time with this new experience and is sure to be back nextseason.

Although I have been breeding and raising Arabian Sport Horses fornearly 40 years, racing is a new venture to which my horses are very well suitedfor, and I absolutely love the thrill of it. Without sacrificing the beauty andrefinement of the Arabian, I have focused on producing gentle horses ofsubstance and athletic ability. They are bred to excel in Endurance, Jumping andracing as well.
