MÉHUL • LE CHANT DU DÉPART Overtures and Revolutionary Works ACD2 2659 Les Jacobins | Mathieu Lussier ARTISTIC DIRECTION • Les Jacobins, the period wind ensemble named for the most famous political group of the French Revolution, returns with Le Chant du Départ, their sophomore recording on ATMA Classique. Under the artistic leadership of bassoonist Mathieu Lussier, Les Jacobins explore the rich but little-known repertoire associated with the French Revolution (1789-1799). • Le Chant du Départ delves into the music of Étienne-Nicolas Méhul, the first true French Romantic composer. He wrote many patriotic works that were frequently played throughout the celebrations of the Revolution. Le Chant du Départ features arrangements of the overtures to six of Méhul’s most successful operas. The recording takes its name from one of the several revolutionary pieces included in the program, songs that were sung by the Revolutionary French armies. The three works featured on this new CD complement the four string quartets recorded on Volume 1, which was released in 2011 and was named Editor’s Choice by Gramophone Magazine. • On this new recording, the Molinari Quartet performs works composed between 1972 and 1988, from Schnittke’s mature period. Schnittke based his 1988 Piano Quartet on the chamber music sketches of Mahler, a composer he greatly admired. The String Trio was commissioned by the Alban Berg Society of Vienna to commemorate the centenary of the Austrian composer’s birth in 1985. Regarded as one of his finest pieces, the 1976 Piano Quintet is an introspective work that marks a turning point for Schnittke’s music.
