MCI HIGHLIGHTS
School Council Meeting – Monday, February 10 – 7pm @ MCI Library!
To All MCI Parents and Guardians, Our next School Council Meeting for this year is at 7 pm on Monday February 10th in the MCI School Library. We believe that a collaborative and inclusive partnership between our school and our families is essential and this will be a wonderful opportunity for parents and guardians to learn more about MCI. At this meeting we will have 1 main agenda item which is about helping students choose their courses for the 2020-2021 school year. Paul Stephenson, Head of Guidance, and Nigel Escoffery, SHSM Team Lead and Guidance Counsellor, will be our guest presenters. Everyone is welcome! See you on Monday night.
Information Items- Finance Team
On December 5th, the MCI Finance team members Shreyas Nyapathi, Harish Uthayakumar, Leyi He,
Atmiya Patel, Tejas Karrthik, Rohit Raj, Mathuran Sivakaran, Hetvi Patel, Rithusayi Sayikumar, and Alice
Yang competed in the University of Waterloo Finance Competition. The competition tested their
knowledge and understanding of investing, budgeting, savings, banking, and accounting. The MCI
Finance team placed 1st out of 38 schools. The team won a $500 prize to be used to promote financial
literacy in our school. Individual achievements include Shreyas Nyapathi and Harish Uthayakumar who
placed 4th and 9th out of 850 students. Shreyas and Harish were the lucky recipients of a $75 Amazon gift
card for their achievement. To prepare for the competition, students participated in a stock market
simulation and completed the University of Waterloo finance modules. The team was taught and coached
by Ms. Pownall.
Students signing out for Friday Prayers
As our days have started to get longer, prayer times have started to coincide more and more with the
latter part of the school day. We would like to remind parents and guardians that we do have a prayer
space available at MCI. Students who would like to use our prayer space are invited to come to the main
office to inquire about our Prayer Spaces. Please have students inform their teachers if they are going to
be making use of this space so that attendance may be tracked accurately.
If, however, your child is going to be signing out for Friday prayers, please be proactive and send in a
note explaining when your child should be signing out and if they are to be returning to school the same
day, when we should expect them back. This will help our office staff as they keep track of attendance
and it will avoid a phone call home to let you know that your child missed part of the day. Thank you in
advance for your support!
Markham Councillor Message Regarding Road Safety
Councillor Usman has updated MCI on the progress that has been made by the City of Markham on Road Safety situation in and around Middlefield Collegiate Institute. Many changes were discussed at a meeting in November. The following highlights what has been done: In December, 2019:
- Adjusting the yellow and “red in all directions” traffic signal timings for all Middlefield intersections to provide more time for vehicles to clear the intersection.
- Implemented advance left turn arrows for the north and south approaches at Middlefield/Highglen
In February, 2020:
- Installed any missing regulatory and advisory signs on the Middlefield corridor and also added new signage, where necessary.
- Installed additional traffic signal heads for the east and west approaches on Denison at Middlefield. These additional heads are intended to address the sight-line visibility issues by providing drivers on Denison Street more advance notice about whether the traffic signal is green, yellow or red.
Any further information or inquiries should be made directly to Tasha Manesh at Councillor Usman’s Ward 7 Office.
A message from our Trustee
February 2020 – Trustee Greetings for School Newsletters
Message from Our Trustee
As we enter another month of winter, this is a good time to be thinking about our health, well-being and the importance of self-care. We know that, like all of us, our students can focus better when they feel better. Our schools play an important role in health and mental health promotion and education, and fostering well-being and mental health is one of our priorities as a school board.
There is a lot of work taking place in our schools and board to create healthy schools and promote mental health and well-being, including:
Providing training and resources for educators on strategies to support mentally healthy classrooms for all students,
including holding a mental health conference. Hiring identity specific mental health workers and developing partnerships with community partners to serve the
diverse needs of our students. Developing a Student Suicide Intervention Protocol to help keep students safe in the event of suicidal thoughts or
actions. Educating students about the risks of substance use and misuse, including vaping and cannabis. Providing strategies and supports for students in preparing for exams and managing stress.
This commitment is also reflected in Board policy like the Healthy Schools and Workplaces policy and procedures. Setting policy, which governs the operation of the Board, is one of the roles of trustees, and we greatly value the input provided by students, staff members, family and community members. I encourage you to look at the policies under review and share your feedback.
We have a lot to look forward to in 2020. At the Board meeting in December, trustees unanimously approved the addition of new permanent Indigenous Trustee and Indigenous Student Trustee positions. We are committed to Indigenous Education in our Board and it is important that these voices are represented at the table. We hope to fill the positions as soon as possible and will share more information as it becomes available.
A message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees is also available on the Board website at www.yrdsb.ca. Juanita Nathan
With winter weather already here, we want to share some important reminders for families. When an inclement weather or extreme cold or day is declared, school transportation (including buses and taxis) are cancelled in the morning and afternoon. Schools will remain open. If you drive your child to school, or your child takes alternate transportation, you must make arrangements for your child to get home at the end of the day. Please call the school if your child will not be attending school on those days. Students will not be penalized for missing school on these days. There may be rare instances when emergency winter events occur and we need to close all schools and Board locations. Please take the time to make plans in the event of an emergency school closure. Information about transportation cancellations and Board closures will be shared through local media, Board and school website and on twitter @YRDSB. Our process for extreme cold, inclement weather and emergency weather days are outlined in the Board’s Severe Weather policy, which has been recently updated and is available for public comment. Seeking feedback from staff and community members, including parents/guardians, is an important part of the review process. All policies available for comment are sent to school council chairs and are posted on the Board website, along with information about how to provide feedback.

UPDATES FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
There is a positive relationship between regular attendance and success in school. Students at MCI are required to attend regularly, to be punctual, and to participate in all scheduled classes.
VALID ABSENCES include illness, bereavement or family emergency.
AUTHORIZED ABSENCES include dentist/doctor appointments, driver’s test, and court appearances.
EXCUSED ABSENCES refer to field trips and school sanctioned events. Students are still considered to be at school.
EXTENDED ABSENCES of four days or more require the completion of a “Special Leave” form at least one week in advance of the leave. This form may be obtained from the Main Office. A parent/guardian signature is required. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on all work missed.
DO NOT plan absences or family vacations during culminating and exam periods as the evaluations CANNOT be rescheduled.
