Here at MCI, our staff, students and admin team are continuing our learning on equitable and inclusive education where we have engaged a range of topics, from a discussion on microaggressions to a staff deconstruction on the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s (TRC) calls to action (the purpose of this commission was to document the history and lasting impacts of the Canadian Indian school system on Indigenous students and their families). Here is an example of one of the calls to action from the TRC’s document: # 62. Black History Month MCI Celebrates Black History Month
In this month’s MCI newsletter, we will highlight Mary Ann Shadd. Mary Ann Shadd was a Black Canadian and the first female publisher in North America, establishing the Provincial Freeman, an abolitionist newspaper, with Rev. Ringgold Ward in 1853. Born in 1823 in Delaware, she moved to Canada in 1851, where she opened an integrated school. After the American Civil War she returned to teaching in the United States, and became the first woman to enroll in Howard University law school.
As an update, on Friday, February 22nd, 2019, our school will be watching the play Notable: The Story of Viola Desmond. Pictures of the event will follow in next week’s e-newsletter!

Confirmation of Continued IPRC Identification and Placement Form
The Identification and placement of every student who is identified as exceptional is reviewed yearly. Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) meetings are currently being established to consider the progress each student has made in relation to his/her IEP goals and to review their current identification and placement.
Over the course of the school year, parents/guardians, staff and students have the opportunity to discuss students’ progress. School staff have sent home the confirmation of continued IPRC identification and placement forms to indicate the level of support recommended for the next school year. Please return the completed form to the Special Education Department by Friday, March 8. Thank you.
The week, the DD class took advantage of the snow and participated in snowshoe walks on the fields around MCI. The experience was a first for many of the students and they really enjoyed the walks.
Lacrosse is Canada's official summer sport and has its roots with Canada's Indigenous peoples. This summer, Ontario will host the field lacrosse world championships. Recently, Mr. Atcha's autism class took some time to learn how to to pass, catch and scoop a lacrosse ball.
Grade 12 Visual Arts Thanks to the grade 12 visual arts class for your beautiful art display in the rotunda! Additionally, congratulations to grade 12 visual arts students Vicky Tran and Zainab Aslam for having their works featured as part of the Moksha Canada Foundation presenting Markham artists for Black History Month and Chinese New Year 2019. The presentation of their works was featured at the Markham Intergenerational Family Day and Games 2019 on Monday, February 18th at Armadale Community Centre. The artists also had the pleasure of meeting a distinguished guest, the Honourable Liberal MP Mary Ng. Vicky created a digital image, for the Chinese New Year theme and for the Black History Month theme, Zainab created an acrylic painting. The two pieces will be put on display near the mayor's office at the Markham Civic Centre. Congratulations to our artists!
UPDATES FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
Please join our women’s tea circle, hosted by the Aaniin Community Centre, every Thursday, from 3-5 PM.
There is a positive relationship between regular attendance and success in school. Students at MCI are required to attend regularly, to be punctual, and to participate in all scheduled classes. VALID ABSENCES include illness, bereavement or family emergency. AUTHORIZED ABSENCES include dentist/doctor appointments, driver’s test, and court appearances. EXCUSED ABSENCES refer to field trips and school sanctioned events. Students are still considered to be at school. EXTENDED ABSENCES of four days or more require the completion of a “Special Leave” form at least one week in advance of the leave. This form may be obtained from the Main Office. A parent/guardian signature is required. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on all work missed. DO NOT plan absences or family vacations during culminating and exam periods as the evaluations CANNOT be rescheduled.
