Syrians and Iraqis are granted asylum in Germany far more often than Pakistanis and Nigerians
One year after the height of Europe’s migrant crisis, Germany — a nation that took in more asylum
seekers than the rest of the continent combined — is confronting the Solomonesque task of deciding
who gets to stay. Yet as authorities adjudicate cases, a contentious truism is emerging: Not all

nationalities are created equal. If you’re from Syria or Iraq, sanctuary is almost guaranteed. But if
you’re from Nigeria or Pakistan, chances are you journeyed half way across the world in vain.

Masoud Barzani Pledges That Kurdish Forces Won’t Enter Mosul
Masoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan Regional Government (a super-province of Iraq) said
Thursday that the KRG paramilitary, the Peshmerga, will not enter Mosul. He also remarked that last
week’s Daesh attack on Kirkuk was an attempt to divert attention from the terrorist organization’s
failures in Mosul. At a news conference in Ninewah Province with Ammar al-Hakim, leader of the
National Coalition (and of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, a Shiite clerically led party), Barzani
said, “Peshmerga forces will not enter the city. The counter-terrorism brigades will be the ones who
go in . . .” He was referring to the Iraqi army special forces, 3 brigades under the Iraqi Counter
Terrorism Service, which are crack troops who have been at the forefront of the liberation of Iraqi
cities from Daesh (ISIS, ISIL).

US must remain in Iraq to stabilize it
Iraq has been in a hell of a mess since the US invasion and occupation in 2003. The dictator, Saddam
Hussein, was overthrown easily, and it allowed the Shiite majority to take power. There is no doubt
that very few Iraqis shed tears over the death of Saddam. But little did they know that this act would
trigger 13 years of war, killings, acts of terrorism and the rise of the extremist Daesh group.

For all its vacillation and incoherence, the policy of Western governments towards the Syrian civil

sometimes as a precondition of talks, at other times after a “transition period” – of the leader of the
Syrian government, Bashar al-Assad.

Lebanon elects Michel Aoun president
Lebanese lawmakers have begun arriving at the parliament building in downtown Beirut to partake in
a presidential election session widely expected to return Free Patriotic Movement founder MP
Michel Aoun to Baabda 26 years on from his controversial wartime term as temporary prime
minister. With the full support of the parliamentary blocs of Hezbollah and the Lebanese Forces, as
well as the majority of Future Movement and Democratic Gathering MPs - not to mention Aoun's
own sizeable bloc - 'The General,' as he is known, is thought to have just enough votes to win the first
round of voting, set to commence at noon, which necessitates the support of two thirds of MPs (86).
Failing that, a second round of voting would immediately follow, requiring just half-plus-one of
parliament (65 MPs), which Aoun would assuredly win.

Algeria Oil: Export In October Will Be Higher Than In September
Algeria is the second largest oil producer in Africa. According to the most recent OPEC Monthly Oil
Market Report, Algeria produces 1,089kbbl/d of oil. This North African country tries to reduce its
dependence on hydrocarbons by diversifying its economy. Algeria intends to boost its oil output by
30% by 2020. Algeria experiences one of the strongest negative effects of current oil price
environment among OPEC countries. That is why this country has a strong incentive to support the
decision to cut oil production, or at least to freeze it. Algeria's Minister of Energy Noureddine
Boutarfa has contributed a lot to reduce tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Thirteen years ago the United States called the reconstruction of the Kabul-Kandahar highway “the
most visible sign” of efforts to rebuild Afghanistan. But today, that stretch of road is no longer a sign
of progress. Instead, littered with bomb craters and insurgent checkpoints, it’s now “beyond repair,”
according to an Afghan official, and a symbol of the failed U.S. intervention here. A report released
