Development I chose this part to develop my very first iteration. I tried to extrude this particular shape from this 2D imagine as if we are looking at it from a bird’s eye view. I decided to keep all facets either vertical or horizontal and that those planes are all at 90-degrees to each other.

Reflection • the design is not interesting enough, everything is either in the same angle or staying

perpendicular against each other. • it’s lack of language of design. there’s not a strong, special style or message. how my work can

provide a platform/ bridge to sense the nature? (5 senses) • how can my work connect to the nature? • what would be the special experience/ emotion response to the building? (6 directions + center) • from classmates’ iterations, besides looking at the given 2D imagine from a bird’s eye view, we

can see it as a section plan and develop the iteration horizontally. • Jerry’s “no-base-rule” is actually helping me understand and experience more about the

support of the model which make us have developed a better support of iteration.

Development From the last iteration, I realized that not all structures have to be built from the ground. And I would like to have more open area around the building, so I decided to cut off some base of the tallest structure and have it tightly attached with the perpendicular building by inserting from the top in order to give support to it.

Reflection • since I want to use the glue as less as I could and I

believe it gives better tension by inserting objections, I inserted the one without the base with the one within a base. however, it looked like it kind of squeezed the base inward, it is better to add some support inside in order not to let the model collapse.

Development One of this week’s works is to illustrate from pictures of the model with different angles. These are my drawings.

Reflection • by drawing pictures of different angles helps me

discover more about finishing line and perspective points.

• it helps me improve my drawing technique.

Reflection • it’s still lack of design language. • no entrance - still haven’t decided what the

entrance should be. • no any specific climax can be marked. • how does it engage the nature?

Development I aimed to make my iteration more interesting and complex than the pervious one. So I tended to add more layers meanwhile subtracting some space out of the model.

Narrative in a sunny day, walking into the woods, enjoying the joy of birds, the parties of insects, surrounded by greens. you will realize that how tiny you are. the power of nature is miraculous, gigantic, fabulous. it is a nature beauty, it gives birth to everything. walking along the path, you will see a glasshouse, it is like a giant warm house of humans. yet, you would not feel cold to be with glass, because the world of woods will be reflected on all the glass, the colors of the woods have been imprinted to you house. it’s like being melted in the woods.

Narrative there are 2 open areas as entrances on the first floor, presenting a welcoming posture. it attracts people to get in and explore more. it’s a natural “4D” theater, it has all natural resources. during the day, everything in the woods would be reflected into the house, a new form of the motherland is performed in shadows.

Narrative trees are dancing, birds are flying, insects are singing. wind blows into the gaps, the friction creates sounds. the sound of wind makes you feel closer to the nature, and meanwhile it contains the mysterious of the woods. at the same time, the wind brings in the smell and taste. it refreshes your living, especially if you have a stressful work or a complicated harsh live in the city. People from inside will feel extremely relaxed and loving as the most beautiful world is all around them, isn’t it wonderful? isn’t it magical?

Narrative finally, you are lying on the bed, looking out the glass, enjoying the night of sea. the stars are telling you tons of stories, the moon claims you in sleep, you will be melted in the galaxy.

The Theater

Reflection • I start to have design language • the functions of The Theater engage the

nature - provide different experience of seeing the nature

• I am not able to cut too many openings to present where the glass is - will lose tension and cannot support the model

Development I tried to implied theater structure into my design. I created a rounded surface which functions to trap and strengthen the sound from outside and allows the sound to go around the building.

The Open Eyes

Development An open eye indicates a welcome image. I used the shape of an open eye to evolve a welcoming entrance and present a message that it’s willing to absorb anything from the nature.

Reflection • use different ceiling to separate the inner space • doesn’t have to be a wall

The Climax

Reflection • remodel and focus on the 2/F • not firm enough -

paper card may not be a good choice of material to model structure with multi complex support points.

Development I tried to make use of the height of ceiling to separate different section without using a physical wall

Functions

Vision It’s natural 4D theater. It has all natural resources. During the day, everything in the woods would be reflected into the house, a new form of the motherland is performed in shadows.

Sound The wind blows into the gaps the friction creates sounds, the sound of wind makes you feel closer to the nature, and meanwhile it contains the mysterious of the woods.

Taste Wind brings in the smell and taste of the greens.

Development I mainly reframed the model of the last two iterations as a one whole structure, it’s like a combination of those two designs.

Reflection • besides taking care of the appearance and trying

the best to maintain the previous iterations’ ideas, I have to pay attention to the support of the model. if the foundation is not strong enough, you can hardly continue building the model.

• in order to have a stronger base, I applied the triangular transition to support multiple layers and the higher structures.

• it’s a good match to use hot glue and long BBQ bamboo skewers, they are firm and cheap.

• I tried to use toothpick with tape at first, but they are weak and easy to collapse. I was not able to form a firm base at all.

Development I covered my previous model of frame with tracing paper as a skin, to preform a light feeling.

Reflection • since the tracing paper is so thin and light and

the frame is not containing large surface are, it’s quite hard to make skin tight and right at the place.

• it’s more difficult when it comes to the gaps. • it took quite a while of time for me to mark and

place the skin at a accurate place as the roof itself is not designed as a flat but with curves and different height.

• it’s not my first time to do a portfolio, but this time is more like an advanced record of progress.

• it’s my first to time to merge and design a portfolio as a magazine formate. and I like how it looks like. however, it takes quite a lot of time to manage the proxemics of two separate pages’ objects.

• I later have figured out a step : whenever I edit and correct the spacing, I export the file as PDF. and then open the PDF file and select to preview in Two Pages at a time. it allows me to preview my work as a magazine form without uploading the file to issuu.
