FOREWORD

At the Department of Industrial Design at Mid Sweden University we like to take things one step further. This is why we work on issues that are key for people’s well-being, and investigate what parts are important for our quality of life – our external as well as internal world.

The name Mid Sweden University refers to the university’s location in Sweden – in the middle. This means that, geographically, we are able to reach everyone – and everyone can reach us – under fairly similar conditions within the borders of our country. We would also aim to be at the heart of the world; especially when it comes to issues dealing with design for all. Our Master’s programme, called Design for All, is the only of its kind worldwide, and our work on these issues can be seen in our research as well as in society.

The Department of Industrial Design mainly offers study programmes, and would like to give you exactly the education you expect. We believe it is important to follow and support your development as a student so that you are able to reach your full potential. Our overall educational model is “learning by doing”, where good subject understanding is essential, and knowledge of the design methodology process is crucial for your development into a capable and professional industrial designer.

Our close collaboration with the industry and society lets you test your knowledge in real-life situations. These projects are often important for everyone involved, and for our students they are often a way to get a foot in the door for future commissions.

We have never aspired to be the greatest; however, we have always aimed to be the best. The difference is not what we say but what we do.  And we do want to make a difference.

EDUCATION

In our ever-changing world, products and services are in a constant need of development. As industrial designers, we constantly face problems; which is why we never see them as such, but as an opportunity for improvement. With carefully prepared methods of analysis, and knowledge of people and technology, we find the natural solution. In addition, included in the profession is to always challenge current design solutions. We always have to ask ourselves: Could it be done better?

During the programme, you will be working with design adapted to the needs of the users. This means a design that is the result of a strategic work process, where the goal is to create a functional form for industrial production.

Because the day-to-day work of the industrial designer could be very varied, the programme includes a range of courses, both in humanities and technology. Much of the work consists of analysing problems and then developing a solution based on studies of how people work and act in different situations. This is why the programme includes theoretical as well as practical assignments and

provides you with knowledge of the process of the creation of a functional form.

The first-year, our courses will provide you with the basic tools needed to develop your skills in sketching, form studies, computer engineering, communication, artistry and creativity. The second year, specialized theoretical courses are added, for example design methodology, ergonomics, production methods, construction methods and environmentally sustainable product development. During the third year you will also take specialized courses in Human Care Design and Recreational Design. The Department of Industrial Design works closely with the community and industry, where the students have the opportunity to work on various design assignments, supervised by professional industrial designers. The final examination project is always in collaboration with an external company or organization.

This program is held in Swedish.

EDUCATION

“Design devises courses of actionto change an existing situationinto a preferred one”Herbert A. Simon, The Science of the Artificial

What are the existing situations we need to change? This question is the starting point in the Design for All method which we have developed at the Mid-Sweden University in Sundsvall. By bringing users with the strongest and most demanding needs into the design process we have created a new method to find innovative design solutions.

Design for All is a vision of a world where all people can participate and experience a high quality of life. It is a world where we appreciate our differences and make it possible for everyone to participate.

We are looking for talented and curious students with ethical ambitions who want to join us in the creative development of advanced sustainable solutions to the challenges the world is faced with. You will be joining a program in which we put special emphasis on Creativity

and Problem Solving Methodology. Design for All uses advanced methods for problem cognition and problem structure definition including root definition of relevant systems and ways to include external specific knowledge. Critical evaluation of existing solutions and analyzing the special needs of the most demanding user groups precedes the development and design of innovative solutions for human wellbeing.

User Centered Design for All ProcessIn the user centered Design for All process we use planned interaction with different target groups to achieve precise facts during every development stage of the design project. Various empiric methods generate a profound understanding of the respective user needs. We can offer a unique research lab to investigate the psychological and physiological effects of different design solutions.

This program is held in English.

Humanity for all is a project some master’s students worked with during the autumn of 2015. They started their project when the entire world faced a problem known as the “migrant crisis”. They wanted to show another side of this issue and change its denomination, so they started by investigating the different terms used to describe people moving away from their home country, both people running from a disaster and people hoping to find better living conditions. After that, they consulted academic research to find correct information and not only the mass media’s view. Their projects work resulted in five design suggestions to make the refugees’ living conditions better both in camps and in the host countries.

It was the master’s students’ first project together and since they all come from different parts of the world and have different backgrounds, it was an exciting and challenging task.

Our students are moving forward to investigate:Ana – How to become a part of integrationHanif – Way out of intra-religious conflict, the reson of our era´s biggest refugee crisisLise – Meeting in the middle, integration in host countryMuzammil – How to migrate as a world citizenSanna – How to overcome the barriers of language and culture.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Industrial Design develop and assess different methods to make the designers able to understand in what ways the design of products, services and envi-ronments affect the people using them. At the department, there is a research lab, where different aspects of interaction can be observed. In the research lab, we are able to create environments by projecting images or movies on three walls in a cube-shaped room. By also stimulating other senses, such as hearing and smell, the experience of actually being in a certain environment can be intensified.  The studio can be used both to understand the design of a product in a context and to evaluate the design of an environment before it is built. We assess and study different aspects of what happens to people when they are confronted with different design solutions:

Conscious experiences – assessed by means of interviews, demand analyses and similar methods, where the users express their experiences.

Behaviour – research by means of observation studies, where the users are photographed or filmed as they use different design solutions. By also wearing Eye tracking glasses, it is possible to follow exactly what the eyes focus on in each situation. The result is a material where it is possible to go back and analyze details in order to improve design solutions.

Unconscious experiences – also on an unconscious level, our brains react to different experiences. By studying chan-ges in heart rate, brain activity and hand perspiration, we can track the unconscious experiences of different design solutions, like by evaluations prototypes during the design process.  This make it possible to avoid solutions that have a stressful or confusing effect on people.

Throughout the design process, different methods can be combined to understand the users experiences to be able to design products, services and environments that are perceived as satisfying and easy to use.

DESIGN STUDIOS

Campus Sundsvall is located in the attractive Åkroken area tastefully newly built in traditional architecture with historic roots. Buildings are separated and held together with a beautiful five-store atriums.

Industrial division inaugurated in autumn 2009 the new design house. The premises were built for our varied activities. On the second floor rooms are designed for basic education classes where students have their personal areas. There are also computer lab, study rooms, kitchenettes, exhibition and social areas. On the fourth floor, you find the Master program where students have their own workstations and computer equipment. On the fourth floor our advanced research lab also are located. On the ground floor, we have modern facilities that house the equally modern laboratory equipment for model and prototype work in most materials. There is also a project studio, photo studio and a full-scale lab. The offices for the staff are located close to the students on the third floor in the same house.

Personal workstations Each student has their own personal workstation throughout their studies. With ergonomic work place wich specially is developed for design work.
