BRONCOS RANKED IN NATIONAL POLLSWestern Michigan earned its first ranking in program history this season, as the Broncos are now No. 23 in the Amway/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. The Broncos rose in the national rank-ings this week after becoming 6-0 following its 45-30 victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday.

Western Michigan’s 6-0 start is the best in program history since 1941. The start includes wins over Big Ten teams Northwestern and Illinois, giving the Broncos two wins over Power 5 schools for the first time in team history. It is also just the fourth time in MAC history a school has beaten two Big Ten opponents in the same season.

TWO MAC RECEIVERS LEAD NATION IN RECEPTION STREAKThe MAC is home to two of the top 10 wide receivers with the longest current reception streak in the nation. Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis (42 games) is tied for first in the country, while Bowling Green’s Ronnie Moore (36 games) ranks eighth in the nation. Also, Toledo wideout Corey Jones (30 games) is tied for 15th in the country in this category.

MAC ANNOUNCED MARATHON MULTI-YEAR EXTENSIONThe MAC announced on Sept. 5th a multi-year contract extension with Marathon Petroleum Company LP as the title sponsor for the Marathon MAC Football Championship Game through the 2018 college football season. This year marks the 20th anniversary for the MAC Football Championship Game, with Marathon as title sponsor for the 14th consecutive season with the previ-ous 13 Championship Games at Ford Field in Detroit.

This year’s Marathon MAC Football Championship Game will be held Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:00 pm ET on ESPN2. The Marathon MAC Football Championship Game is the second-longest running college football conference championship game in the nation. In addition, with Ford Field as the host, this also makes the Marathon MAC Football Championship Game is the second-longest consecu-tive venue outside of the SEC’s title game from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Marathon Petroleum became the title sponsor of the Marathon MAC Foot-ball Championship Game in 2003 when No. 14 ranked Miami, led by Ben Roethlisberger, defeated No. 20 ranked Bowling Green, 49-27. This season’s 2016 Marathon MAC Football Championship Game will be the 14th year for Marathon as title sponsor and this three-year contract extension will ensure the continuation of this relationship with the MAC through the 2018 college football season.

The MAC began staging a conference football championship game in 1997 and originally the game was played on campus sites through 2003. The game moved to Detroit in 2004 and this year’s 2016 Marathon MAC Football Championship will mark the 13th season for the game at Ford Field.

HERB DEROMEDI NAMED TO CFP SELECTION COMMITTEEHerb Deromedi, the winningest football coach in MAC and Central Michigan history, was named this past January as one of four new members on the Col-lege Football Playoff Selection Committee. Deromedi will serve a three-year term on the 13-member committee that ranks the top 25 teams and determines the matchups for the four-team football playoff and the host bowls. Deromedi was selected by members of the College Football Playoff Management Committee, which is made up of all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick. Deromedi, who was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007, started at Central Michigan in 1967 as an assistant coach under Roy Kramer. He succeeded Kramer as head coach in 1978 and compiled a 110-55-10 record, including 90 MAC victories. His teams earned three MAC titles and beat Michigan State in 1991 and 1992. Deromedi is also a member of the Central Michigan Athletic Hall of Fame (2000), the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (2004) and the MAC Hall of Fame (2012). He left coaching after the 1993 season to become the director of athletics at Central Michigan for 12 years, and he previously served on the NCAA Football Issues Committee and is a former chair of the NCAA Football Rules Committee. His tenure was highlighted by an extensive upgrade of the cam-pus’s athletic facilities, 34 MAC championships and eight MAC Institutional Academic Achievement Awards in a nine-year span.

MAC BOWL NOTES• The MAC tied a Conference record with seven teams bowl eli-gible during the 2015 bowl season. The seven MAC bowl invi-tations for Bowling Green (10-4), Northern Illinois (8-6), Toledo (10-2), Ohio (8-5), Central Michigan (7-6), Western Michigan (8-5) and Akron (8-5) matched the Conference record for programs receiving a bowl invitation in a single season, which also occurred during the 2012 bowl season.

• Bowling Green (GoDaddy), Northern Illinois (San Diego Coun-ty Credit Union Poinsettia), Toledo (Marmot Boca Raton), Ohio (Raycom Media Camellia), Central Michigan (Quick Lane), West-ern Michigan (Popeyes Bahamas) and Akron (Famous Idaho Po-tato) represented the MAC during the 2015 bowl season.

MAC WITH THREE NEW HEAD COACHES FOR 2016Three new head football coaches have joined the MAC for the 2016 season. Toledo named Jason Candle head coach on Dec. 2, 2015, while Bowling Green tabbed Mike Jinks to lead the Falcons program on Dec. 9, 2015. Ball State named Mike Neu as head football coach on Jan. 7, 2016.

Toledo: Jason Candle: Candle was named head football coach at Toledo on Dec. 2. Candle, who previously served as Toledo’s as-sociate head coach/offensive coordinator, replaces Matt Campbell, who left after four seasons as the Rockets’ leader to become the head coach at Iowa State. Candle becomes the 27th head football coach in the 95-year history of Toledo football.

Candle, 36, has been on the Rocket staff since 2009, when he was hired by former Toledo head coach Tim Beckman to coach the receivers. Candle was named the team’s offensive coordinator in 2012 shortly after Campbell assumed the head coaching position. Candle assumed the title of associate head coach in 2014. Under Candle’s guidance, the Toledo offense has been prolific. In 2015, the Rockets ended the regular season ranked second in the MAC in scoring offense (35.3) and third in total offense (463.3 yards per game). In 2014, Toledo led the MAC in just about every major offensive category, including scoring offense (36.6), total offense (490.5) and rushing offense (256.4).

Bowling Green: Mike Jinks: Bowling Green tabbed Texas Tech Associate Head Coach Mike Jinks to lead the defending MAC Champion football program. Jinks, who also coached running backs for the Red Raiders, will become the 19th head coach in program history. Jinks, who comes to Bowling Green after spending the 2015 season as Associate Head Coach, has coached the Red Raiders’ run-ning backs for the past three seasons.

Prior to his time at Texas Tech, he was a National Coach of the Year finalist while winning the 2010 Texas State Championship and compiling a record of 43-4 in his final three seasons at San Antonio powerhouse, Steele High School. Known for their prolific offense, Texas Tech has seen great success in 2015 under Jinks. The Red Raiders own the second-best offense in the country, totaling 7,134 yards in 12 games (594.5 yards per game). Texas Tech also had the second-best passing offense. The Red Raiders averaged 46.6 points per game (second in FBS) and had 33 touchdown drives under two minutes last season. Texas Tech also ranked inside the top five nationally for third-down conversions (.519), first downs offense (346), and offensive plays (1,002).

Mike Neu, Ball State: Ball State University welcomed back one of its own as Mike Neu was named the new head coach for the Cardinal football program. Neu played collegiate football at Ball State where he was named 1993 MAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Neu has 15 years of coaching experience with stops in the National Football League, Division I FBS football and the arena leagues. Most recently, Neu served the previous two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the New Orleans Saints. In 2014 under Neu’s guidance, quarterback Drew Brees was selected to his franchise-record eighth Pro Bowl as a Saint. Brees led the league in completions (456), tied for first in passing yardage (4,952), ranked second in completion percentage (69.2) and tied for fifth in touchdown passes (33). In 2015, Brees once again led the NFL in passing yardage (4,870) while ranking second in completion percentage (68.3) and comple-tions (428).

Neu, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, started 38-of-41 games at quarterback in his four seasons at Ball State (1990-93). He was honored with the MAC’s Vern Smith Award as the league’s most valuable player and the MAC Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior. That year, Neu and the Cardinals went 8-3-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league action to capture the MAC championship. In one of his greatest games as a collegiate quarterback, Neu threw for a Ball State record 469 yards and completed 28-of-40 passes against Toledo in 1993 to help the Cardinals rally from a 30-3 deficit and record the largest comeback in Ball State history, a 31-30 Homecoming victory.

MAC AND CBS SPORTS NETWORK REACH MULTI-YEAR DEAL THROUGH 2018-19In June of 2015, the MAC and CBS Sports Network announced a multi-year deal to televise college football and basketball games from the Mid-American Conference. The deal, which begins this season and continues through 2018-19, is through a sublicense agreement with ESPN.

CBS Sports Network will air up to 12 football and 12 basketball games per year, with the first year calling for six football games and up to seven basketball games. CBS Sports Network, the 24-hour home of CBS Sports, is available across the country through local cable, video and telco providers and via satellite on DirecTV Channel 221 and Dish Network Channel 158.

MAC AND ESPN ANNOUNCE HISTORIC 13-YEAR RIGHTS EXTENSION DEAL THROUGH 2016-27 SEASONIn 2014, the MAC and ESPN announced a 13-year rights agree-ment that will be the largest and most extensive agreement in the history of the Conference. The extension, which adds provisions to the remaining three years of the original national rights agree-ment and adds an additional 10 years to the deal with ESPN, brings long-term security for the Conference through the 2026-27 aca-demic year.

This agreement provides ESPN with exclusive television and digi-tal distribution rights for all MAC sporting events, and guarantees coverage of every football game, and select men’s and women’s basketball and Olympic sporting events through the 2026-27 aca-demic season.

The MAC Football Championship Game and the MAC football regular season is the foundation for the national deal with ESPN. The 2016 MAC football regular season will be highlighted by na-tional coverage of 17 mid-week games during the month of No-vember on ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 as the Conference race unfolds in both the East and West divisions. The MAC Football Championship Game on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 pm ET will be tele-vised nationally on ESPN2.

The agreement also follows the recent trend of several of the most successful athletic seasons in the MAC combined with record tele-visions audiences on ESPN. The success by MAC athletic pro-grams is a collective effort by MAC membership across multiple sports.

MAC PART OF NEW COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF ERAThe 2016 college football season enters the third year of the current four-team playoff era with the College Football Playoff. The two College Football Playoff Semifinals will be played in bowl games this year (Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl; Vizio Fiesta Bowl) and the College Football Playoff National Championship will be played in Tampa Bay on Jan. 9.

The two Semifinals and four other premier bowl games (Capital One Orange Bowl; Goodyear Cotton Bowl; All-State Sugar Bowl; and Rose Bowl) will be played on New Year’s Eve and Jan. 2nd. The Semifinal games will rotate among these six different bowls. All MAC programs will join every FBS team in college football with equal access to the playoff based upon its performance. No team will qualify automatically.

The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will choose four teams for the playoffs based on body of work, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common op-ponents, championships won and other factors.

The highest ranked program by the Selection Committee from either the MAC, American Athletic, Conference USA, Mountain West or Sun Belt Conferences will play annually in one of the premier bowl games.

MAC Week Six Quick Recaps:

Toledo 35, Eastern Michigan 20 -- Toledo junior quarterback Lo-gan Woodside threw for 247 yards and four touchdowns to lead Toledo to a 35-20 victory over a stubborn Eastern Michigan squad in Ypsilanti on Saturday.

The final outcome was not settled until Woodside connected with Corey Jones in the corner of the end zone from 12 yards out with 2:37 to play. A DeJuan Rogers’ interception on the ensuing drive eliminated any hopes of an Eagle comeback.

Woodside, who leads the NCAA in passing efficiency, completed 25-of-31 passes. Junior Cody Thompson led the way with a career-high seven receptions for 126 yards and one TD. Senior Corey Jones also had seven catches and a score. Senior Kareem Hunt paced the running game with 141 yards and one TD.

Akron 35, Miami 13 -- On Homecoming weekend, the Akron alumni witnessed the Zips’ dominating performance against Miami for a 35-13 win to remain undefeated in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field.

It was the Zips’ sixth consecutive conference win, and Akron’s lon-gest league winning streak since joining the MAC in 1992. The Zips moved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in MAC play, while Miami fell to 0-6 on the season and 0-2 in league contests.

Akron’s starting QB junior Tra’Von Chapman had a career day in passing completions (15), attempts (29), and touchdowns (3) while passing for 174 yards. He also found the endzone on a 70-yard run for the Zips’ first touchdown. He led the team with a career-high 80 yards on the ground on 10 carries.

Ohio 30, Bowling Green 24 -- The Ohio football team (4-2, 2-0 MAC) held on to beat Mid-American Conference East Division rival Bowling Green (1-5, 0-2 MAC) 30-24. With the win, the Bobcats’ defeated the Falcons for the first time since 2011. Ohio quarterback Greg Windham was 20-for-27 passing for 198 yards and added nine carries for 43 yards and one touchdown.

MAC Week Six Quick Recaps:

Western Michigan 45, NIU 30 -- Western Michigan senior wide receiver Corey Davis and junior running back Jarvion Franklin each put on a show Saturday night as Western Michigan improved to 6-0 and are already bowl eligible in front of a near-capacity 28,042 homecoming crowd, defeating Northern Illinois 45-30 at Waldo Stadium.

Western Michigan’s 6-0 start is its best record since going 8-0 in 1941. It was the Broncos’ first win over the Huskies since 2008.

The Bronco offense erupted for 14 straight points in the second half to pull away from the Huskies, who had cut the lead to 24-23. Franklin finished with 249 total yards of offense and Davis had six catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

Central Michigan 24, Ball State 21 -- Central Michigan senior quarterback Cooper Rush threw for 269 yards and one touchdown, and Central Michigan held on to beat Ball State 24-21 on Saturday.

Ball State sophomore quarterback Riley Neal led the Cardinals to the Chippewas 29 with 1:43 remaining, but threw an interception to Amari Coleman in the end zone to end the drive. On the ensuing series, Devon Spalding ran 52 yards on a second-and-4, and then Central Michigan (4-2, 1-1 Mid-American) ran out the clock.

Kent State 44, Buffalo 20 -- Kent State quarterback Nick Holley ran for 224 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns while help-ing Kent State roll to a 44-20 win over the University at Buffalo on Saturday at UB Stadium.

Making just his second start at quarterback for the Golden Flash-es, Holley delivered a strong hint at what was to come when he raced 65 yards on the game’s opening play. The long run set up the game’s first points – a 31-yard field goal by Shane Hynes with 12:24 to play in the first quarter.

MAC EAST VS. MAC WESTThis season the East and West Divisions will once again face each other in 18 crossover regular season games.

Over the previous eight years (2008-2015), the MAC West has had the upper hand in crossover regular season games against the MAC East, winning the head-to-head regular season series in seven of the last eight years as the West holds a 101-43 (.701%) regular season record in crossover games over the East during that span.

However, the East and West Division split the series as each has won four Marathon MAC Football Championship games during this eight-year span. From the West Division, Northern Illinois (2011, 2012, 2014) and Central Michigan (2009) have won the Conference Championship, while the East Division has won four crowns with Bowling Green (2015, 2013), Miami (2010) and Buffalo (2008).
