Appreciating the power of the horse tochange lives
One note from a parent:
Hannahs Horseshoes of Hope is
a wonderful place. The trainersand volunteer staff are veryhelpful. They have helped myson, Jacob, go from completely
terrified of horses - to riding with four volunteers to giving thehorse commands with only the
trainer. I never thought thiswould be possible. They take the
time to explain everything tohim. He knows what to expect
and so do I. He looks forward toriding Cisco on Saturdays. Heknows that the time he spends atHannahs is all about helpinghim.

A Day in the Life of aTherapy Horse
By Krista Aguilar
Hi! My name is Geronimo and Im avery cute pinto pony. Well, at leasteveryone tells me that Im cute! I
think they must be right!
Normally, my days are quitesimple. I like to start out with a nicehealthy breakfast of grain and hayserved by my personal waitress,Krista Aguilar. Since it is sodelicious I usually take my time so
that I can taste every kernel of grain, which usually annoys my waitressbecause she wants me to eat it up
faster. But I never listen to her (at
least not on that issue). Sometimes, after breakfast, I like to take a drinkout of the little pond down the hill, which Krista thinks is disgusting.
But I dont listen to her on this issueeither. To me, that dirty water tastesdelicious!
I spend the rest of the day hangingout with my buddy Woody, whounfortunately is so old that he gets alittle boring.
I really like it when my youngbuddy Mini Cooper escapes under the
fence to come play with me. We havea lot of fun racing around the fieldand rearing up to play mock fight.Mini Cooper manages to escapealmost every day he is a regularHoudini when it comes to his
pasture fence!
What I like the most is when I havelesson days!
My first rider of the day is a small, delightful girl, who is very soft-spoken and kind-hearted. She loves
to ride me and I carry her carefullyaround the arena and try to listenhard to what she is telling me to do. I
try my best to obey her because Iknow she is very special.
Sometimes one of my riders comesdown to the barn and grooms meafter they ride and I love that.! almost fall asleep under the lovingcaresses of their brushes. I also reallylike it when they take me to schoolsand other places to show people aboutwhat we do. It is so much fun to meelots of kids and people and help them
to understand how much we horse(well, in my case, ponies!) helpspecial people and make their livesbetter.
Well, that is about it, my life ispretty simple but very fulfilling andIm a happy pony doing what I likebest: eating, hanging out, and
helping people!
Bye for now. Come visit me somday! I would love to show you aroundmy pasture!

Another note from a parent-
My name is Amanda. I have two
little boys, Joseph, 8, and Devin, 6.
Joseph is dx with bipolar
II/adhd/arenold chierimalformation/migraines/ asthma.Since Joseph has been riding atHannahs, we have seen a bigimprovement with him. He hashad fewer outbursts and not as
many migraines. Joseph has hadso much improvement in schoolthat he has been switched from his
behavioral class to pretty much aregular second grade class. We
have had so many great things
happen for Joseph since he startedriding. His biggestaccomplishment since riding atHannahs has been being elected
Student of the Month last year -and this year he has already earnedtwo core essential certificates.
Devin is dx with explosive/
PDD/autism. Before Devin startedriding at Hannahs, we were
having a lot of problems with his
development. He was rarelytalking and could not write.. He
was also having a lot of outbursts.
Since Devin has been riding, hehas started talking where other
people can understand him better.
Devins first written sentence was
Hi, my name is Devin. I can
rid a horse.
That paper is hanging up in theoffice at Hannahs. Even though
everything was not spelledcorrectly, we thought it was
perfect!
During the time that Devin wasntriding, we did start to have a few
problems in school, to the point
that I was being called to theschool. Now, since his riding
lessons have started back up, Ihave been getting good reports
almost everyday.
My kids and I love Hannahs! We
are very thankful that the staff has
let them join in this wonderfulprogram.
A Summer of Horses, Mud, andA Summer of Horses, Mud, andA Summer of Horses, Mud, andA Summer of Horses, Mud, andGrowthGrowthGrowthGrowthBy Laura Hartmann
For many this summer of 2007 will
berememberedas the year
of theinfamous
flood;however, I
will alwaysrememberthewonderfulexperiencethat I had atHannahs
Horseshoesof Hope astheir first summer intern.
A little back-ground on myself: Inhigh school I rode horses andcompeted in jumping andeventing. During that time, I alsobabysat for two little boys with
autism. Their parents encouragedme to introduce the boys to horses
and riding. With only my riding
experience and intuition I began towork with the boys on petting,
grooming, and eventually ridingthe horses. Even without knowingabout riding therapy in any forma
sense, I was hooked! Now I am asenior at Austin College studyingsociology and pre-occupationatherapy. My horse Sunny lives outat Hannahs, and I visit him when Icome out to help with lessons andhorse schooling.
My goal for my internship was toexpand my knowledge beyond avolunteers perspective and to
learn more about the dailyoperations of a therapeutic ridingcenter. I was able to experience
many aspects of HHH, fromfundraising to policy making, in-structing to event planning. Inaddition to my experiences inBonham, I also traveled aroundTexas to visit three other ridingcenters. My favorite project of the
summer was a mini camp I puttogether in conjunction with theFirst United Methodist Church inSherman for Great Days of ServiceFor three days, handicapped adultsmet us in the Loy Lake coveredarena to learn grooming, horse
anatomy, and horse measuringThe high-light of the day waswhen we teamed up to paint one
of our horses with our handprintsLess exciting, but even more
important was the work on thepolicy and procedure manual foHHH. As Hannahs moves closerand closer to center accreditationthrough the North American Ridingfor the Handicapped Association(NARHA), they require more andmore paperwork! My contributionwas to begin adapting policiesborrowed from another NARHA
The thing I love aboutHannahs Horseshoes ofHope is not only do I get tohelp kids with special needsride horses, but it helps mebetter understand what
kind of problems they haveto overcome. There isnothing I love more than tohelp others.

center and to help edit the policiesand procedures manual.
Hannahs also helped me attendthree different excursions to learn
about the world of riding therapythrough others experience. I first
went to Tarleton University for a
NARHA instructor workshop; thishelped me so much with my
instructing and allowed me meetothers who are also just gettingstarted in the industry. I also
spend several days at WindridgeTherapeutic Riding ob-servinglessons, taking notes on the facilityand even instructing. Finally, Iwent to an administrativeworkshop hosted by Equest in
Dallas about managing a ridingtherapy center. Here I learned so
much about what it really meansto operate a riding therapy center!I benefited so much from all of the
knowledge that I accumulated onthese off-site experiences.
Hopefully my career path will leadto continued work with ridingtherapy. Currently, I am aninstructor-in-training with hopes tobecome certified with NARHA inJanuary. The next step for me willbe occupational therapy school.
With this knowledge I can usehorses as a partner practicinghippotherapy. I graduate in Mayand hope to attend OT school atTWU in Dallas.
This summer I gained knowledge,
connections, and confidence tohelp me continue in myprofessional growth.
