Session Objectives And Takeaways
Session Objective(s): Windows 7 deployment tools overview
Evolution of the Deployment Toolkit (BDD to MDT)
Introduction to MDT 2010
Understand the improvements/changes in MDT 2010
Introducing Windows 7From a deployment perspective…
• Setup and installation is like Windows Vista
• Scripts, answer files, and processes are generally compatible
Familiar
• New Windows Automated Installation Kit tools enhance or replace some older tools
• Tools enable new scenariosRefined
• No increased hardware requirements
• Maintained application compatibility with Windows Vista
Compatible
Introducing Windows 7Windows Automated Installation Kit 2.0 - 1/2
New tools:Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool (DISM.EXE)
Replaces PKGMGR.EXE, PEIMG.EXE, INTLCFG.EXE
Adds new offline enumeration capabilities
BCDBOOT.EXEConfigures the boot environment (BCD)
Introducing Windows 7Windows Automated Installation Kit 2.0 - 2/2
Updated tools:ImageX, WIM filter driver
New mount process (may take longer)
Windows PE 3.0New process for adding components (uses DISM)
USMT 4.0Support for hard links can greatly reduce state migration time for refresh (wipe/load) deployments
Support for migration from an offline OS enables easier deployment scenarios and simpler break/fix capabilities
Now shipped in Windows AIK
Introducing Windows 7WAIK 2.0 Impact on MDT 2010
From your perspective, little will change*Deployment Workbench, scripts updated to handle new and changed tools
Working with Windows 7 will be just like Windows Vista
• MDT 2010 abstracts the WAIK 2.0 tool changes. If you perform image maintenance tasks manually, then you will notice the differences with the new toolset.

USMT 4.0New Hardlink and offline migration capabilities
Deployment Image Servicing and Management toolReplaces several previous tools, adds new enumeration capabilities
MDT 2010 makes these changes transparent
Introducing MDT 2010Removed support
No support for SMS 2003 OS Deployment Feature PackYou can continue to use MDT 2008 Update 1 and BDD 2007 Update 2 with SMS 2003 OSD
No support for Windows Vista RTMWindows Vista SP1 is the minimum, due to underlying tool restrictions
No new functionality for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
But we will continue to support deploying these with MDT 2010, for those who need to work with combinations of OSes.
No additional server-specific functionalityServer role and product installation actions postponed for now
