Live Search was launched on Sept. 12, 2006. Customer feedback played a significant role in Live Search delivering the following:

Integration throughout the Windows Live and MSN experience to help bring together everything the user wants in an easy-to-access place

A unique design with customization tools and personalization options to put users in control and help them search the way they want so they can find the information they need

Deep vertical categories, cutting-edge image search and custom-tailored search engines (macros)

Global mapping and local search with immersive 2-D and 3-D maps and directions so customers can find and explore places and businesses from one place


Live.com brings Live Search and the customer’s online world together, providing a single place to find everything such as Web sites, news, maps, phone numbers, satellite photos and PC files so people can find all the information they want, fast.

Tools to Improve Relevance:

A clean interface that clearly separates sponsored sites and related searches from search results so the user is not confused.

Related Searches help users refine their queries by offering a list of related terms. Helping our customers refine their queries is one of the biggest things we can do to help them find their answers.

Suggested spelling corrections are also offered.


More Search Improvement Tools:

Live Search suggests other searches users may want to try when the service is unable to find any results. Pointers to search tips are also shown.

Live Search also returns Instant Answers for quick responses to known facts. The different types of Instant Answers are covered later in this presentation.

Advanced Search allows users to set their own search criteria by site or domain, where results link or by country, region or language.

The search bar in Live Search helps people find relevant results faster by allowing them to view results segmented by type, such

as Web pages, images, news articles, maps and directions,

classified ads, and more (in the drop-down box), without the

need to re-enter the same query each time or leave the page.

Live Search Images (3/3):Powerful control features to Find, View, Save and Share Images on the Web

• Results Preview in Filmstrip View allows users to hover over an image to get details and even click on the image to preview the source Web site, without actually leaving their search results page, thereby saving time and clicks.

• From here users can open the image, e-mail it to a friend, add it to their scratchpad or give feedback on the image to Microsoft.

Live Search Macros: Choose From Hundreds in the Windows Live Gallery

On the Windows Live Gallery users can find macros, custom-tailored search engines, for a wide range of subjects created by the community and shared for everyone to use; or they can create their own macro for personal use or sharing with others.

Because they only search the specified sites, Windows Live search macros give users search results more relevant to what they are interested in.

Each macro has its own home page, making it easy to use, add to a search browser, and share with others.


A step-by-step process allows users to create, define, test, and share their own custom search engine.

Users can compare the results of their custom search against those from Live Search.


Sports Answers include detailed player and team statistics as well as status of games in progress while in season.

Notice above that the score of the LA Lakers game against the San Antonio Spurs at the time of the search is given.

Instant Answers (1/2)

Live Search provides real answers in direct response to questions.

Answers never replace Web results; rather, they appear above results when relevant and are flagged with a blue check box, adding value on top of the Web results.

Live Search allows users to focus their search results on news, to help keep them abreast of current events.

Information includes news source, date and time (if within the previous 24 hours), news abstract and a link to the news story.

The News vertical category is included on the Search bar by default.


Live Search Video allows users to search for and browse online video content from within the Live.com platform.

Information includes video source, length, and format.

Video vertical category can be added to Search bar.

Live Search Academic allows customers to search through academic information and journals, including computer science, engineering and physics journals and newly added biomedical content.

Live Search Academic helps researchers, university faculty, librarians and students quickly and effectively conduct research across a range of academic journals.

Live Search Academic is available in 48 languages and includes features that let users preview content, choose their detail level, sort results and use tools such as a citation exporter, which complements research activity rather than distracts from it.
