08:55:55 PDT Question: Hello from Idaho! I'm leading a product training myself for the next hour, but hopefully be here to catch up

at the first break!

Answer: Check the slides from the FAQ tab and you'll be able to catch up

08:56:24 PDT Question: Some of the heaviest rains I ever saw were when in Sioux Falls. Sunny here in Los Angeles today. Answer: Weather is extreme on the Great Plains

08:57:12 PDT Question: Do you recommend we sign into the Azure portal and build example solutions with you? Answer: We will go pretty fast. You might want to do that after we get the recordings posted and you can pause.

08:57:33 PDT Question: I have a meeting in the middle of this presentation. Will there be a saved session that I can come back to

later to catch up? Answer: We get the recording posted about 2 weeks after the live course.

08:58:16 PDT Question: I am also an absolute beginner to Azure Answer: Glad you can join us today!

09:01:46 PDT Question: Greetings from Atlanta! Answer: Hi Stephen!

09:08:52 PDT Question: Bruno - I have a WordPress site that our Marketing Department setup for our Instructors, we are an

education company. I need to migrate the WordPress site which has a lot of content. Should I consider a Website or a VM on Azure? Answer: You could test the migration to web sites. I run my blog on WP on web sites. Since web sites can scale, and

are auto-managed, it is a better choice for this I think.

09:09:32 PDT Question: If Windows Azure has a free trial period, why do they ask for credit card information? I was in the process

and I couldn't complete for this reason. Is there a way to remove this "requisite"? Answer: This is to prove you are a human, and over 18 years old, so you can accept the terms and conditions. IT

WILL NOT BE CHARGED, unless you unlock the spending cap.

09:10:47 PDT Question: can someone put the links they just showed up here in chat? Answer: The links are in the slides that you can download from the FAQ tab

09:11:27 PDT Question: nice computers!!! I have an old dell latitude d610 laptop. Answer: The big touch screen displays are Planar Helium PCT2785 in case you can find a good deal on one

09:12:33 PDT Question: invalid voucher for MVA "azdcmva1" Answer: The voucher code is AzDevCamp1 (azdcmva1 is a different link I think)

09:14:03 PDT Question: Can you please post the link to the voucher? Missed it. Answer: To use the voucher for MVA Points you just need to go to your MVA dashboard

09:14:15 PDT Question: It says only 30 days for trial Answer: It is up to 30 days OR $200. So you can use up the cash faster than the 30 days.

09:14:32 PDT Question: WOW the co-author of "Azure in Action" (one of the first Azure books) answering our questions. How great

is that?

Answer: Thanks. It is also known as the funniest Azure books.

09:14:52 PDT Question: I'm under the free period of Azure. Can I create free VM's under the trial period? Answer: Yes, all of the services are available in the trial

09:14:53 PDT Question: So this is my first time on MVA new cs student just wondering if I have to go to class can I pick up where I

left off somewhere. Answer: We will have the recording posted in about 2 weeks in case you have to miss anything. If you take a look at

the slides you'll at least know what we covered.

09:16:55 PDT Question: where can I read about MSDN benefits for Azure? Answer: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/member-offers/msdn-benefits-details/

09:17:52 PDT Question: So, for the Windows Azure account, if I enter my credit card info, it won't be charged by default after the

trial period. Is this correct? Or if I don't "disable" my account or call, will it be charged? Answer: You will not be charged because of the spending cap that is put in. You have to remove that to do anything

after the trial expires. You will receive emails about this, so watch for those.

09:19:11 PDT Question: I loaded a site that creates an image using Bitmap(). When I load it to Azure it doesn't work. I read

somewhere that I have to create a separate in memory Bitmap object when writing to disk, but that also didn't work. Any ideas? Answer: what service in azure are you using to host that web site?

09:20:39 PDT Question: Our students in Europe, Eastern Europe, China and Africa only have a few security questions concerning

MS, and the invasive US Government can and may one day cut off the entire cloud, and all their data would be lost. Answer: We have datacenters all over the world, including China. IF that happened, it would only affect the US

datacenters.

09:22:19 PDT Question: @Brian. Are you asking me or Trevor? Answer: In this UI, I can't go back and see what I have answered. Ask again and I will see what I can do.

09:23:20 PDT Question: Brian: I'm using website to host a Web API Answer: chances are the problem is that you are trying to read from the disk directly, and you don't have permissions

to do that. We would have to look at the code. Usually this is because the physical path is hardcoded.

09:23:41 PDT Question: Can we control which datacenter (geographically) is used to host our apps? Answer: Yes, you can pick which datacenter you deploy your services/code/data to. We don't move your stuff, but

you can easily.

09:24:24 PDT Question: I have my website on LAMP architecture, I have to move it to Cloud, I had a plan to move it to Amazon,

but now that I know Azure also handles PHP, how stable is it? How much load can it handle

Answer: Very stable. The cloud doesn't fix stupid, so you do have to build an app that can scale and be reliable.

09:26:18 PDT Question: Do you have data centers with full cloud backup-offline in Russia, Ukraine, North Africa, South Africa, and

Brazil; if so we at UQD in Netherlands would like to teach Azure both physically and online. [link] Answer: Anyone can use any of the datacenters you want, you do not have to have one in your country. And your

data/code is always yours, so you can always backup/download/remove your stuff from the cloud when you want. Data center locations are listed here> http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/solutions/?WT.mc_id=azurebg_us_sem_bing_br_cloud_nontest_features&WT.srch=1

09:26:36 PDT Question: Sales pitch not needed PaaS is the way forward Answer: PAAS is great for new work, and IAAS is great for migrating existing systems.

09:28:38 PDT Question: We have Windows applications running on a plant floor. Would those run on Azure and the plant floor

users would have to have Internet access? Answer: yes. Although there are limited situations where you can have a direct line from your site to the datacenter.

You could also setup a VPN from your site to our datacenter.

09:33:57 PDT Question: Will we able to download the video after this session? Answer: all sessions are being recorded and will be posted to MVA. We will send the URL to all attendees when

they're published in approximately 2 weeks

09:35:36 PDT Question: is Bizspark available for freelancers as well? I do have a web / email Answer: Bizspark is for companies that ship software. Freelancing consulting would probably not qualify

09:37:05 PDT Question: I would be nice if consulting startups qualified for the BizSparq program Answer: We did have Web Site Spark, but that was changed to a more open/free

program. http://www.microsoft.com/web/websitespark/

09:37:31 PDT Question: On the PAAS websites, are they always spun up? Answer: There is always at least one cpu/core running your paas service, unless you decommission the service and

pull it down.

09:38:25 PDT Question:

> Quoted question: On the PAAS websites, are they always spun up? > Quoted answer: There is always at least one cpu/core running your paas service, unless you decommission the service and pull it down. Answer: @XebraTech, web sites will spin down if they haven't been hit in a while. When a new hit comes in they will

be spun back up.

09:39:48 PDT Question: We have a small startup where we basically focus on creating mobile apps for Windows Phone, Android

and iPhone. Will we qualify for Bizspark program Answer: In that case you can get the details at Microsoft.com/bizspark. You can apply and see what they say.

09:40:22 PDT Question: Can BizPark be used by a Developer Education School [an online school] Answer: For schools, use DreamSpark. We can usually work to get you a grant for DreamSpark Premium, which has

greater benefits.

09:44:31 PDT Question: is there anything like GitHub on Azure for bizspark members, instead of me having to setup TFS on my

Azure subscription? Answer: TFS can use Git if you want. and many services (web sites for example) can connect directly to git or

github.

09:50:21 PDT Question: thanks Brian, but what I am wondering though is whether TFS is directly available, as a piece in PaaS

stack. I understand that TFS can use Git. thx Answer: TFS as a service is called "Visual Studio Online" is that what you mean?

09:50:40 PDT Question: does Azure Mobile Svcs support iPhone dev? Will it? Answer: Yes, with open source SDKs and Tools

09:51:44 PDT Question: can you Remote Desktop to SQL database machine to tweak some settings? Answer: No, you cannot. If you need a strictly controlled/configured SQL box, run SQL on VM.

09:53:21 PDT Question: Are there simple data table services instead of full blown SQL DB? Answer: Yes, as part of Azure Storage, we have 'Tables', which are super-fast and scalable, and are basically a no-

sql type solution.

09:54:13 PDT Question: Security is the biggest challenge of Cloud Answer: It was five years ago, now not so much. When people say security, they usually mean fear.

09:55:17 PDT Question: how do you decide to use data tables vs. sql Server? Answer: First, is if you are moving something, and it already uses SQL, then use SQL. If this is new, then you look at

if you want to learn Tables (most people already know SQL), then it is scale/performance/cost. And if your data is relational or not.

09:56:11 PDT Question: Is MS Azure ideal for a beginning programmer or just perfect on individual .NET resources first? Answer: Azure runs a wide variety of OSs, platforms, languages, and tools. So it is much more than Windows or

.NET. It is a good place for anyone to start.

09:57:09 PDT Question: Thanks for all the great questions and thanks to my peers for helping out! Answer: You guys are doing a great job.

09:58:41 PDT Question: Would that be the solution if I needed to sync data from a WP app to a Store app? Answer: I would look at using Azure Mobile Services, and using that to sync some state data. By always putting the

latest state in Azure, then your app can compare the date/time of the cloud state, and decide to use it, or overwrite it with new state. Many games run this way.

09:59:51 PDT Question: Loving the stream Bruno! As a student, and apprentice developer, I am honored to be able to attend this. Answer: Thanks for the feedback!

10:01:03 PDT Question: Azure seems to cure the data loss as does offline storage, so then it is pure illusion. Answer: Many times the security, reliability, and etc. is higher with Azure than with what a customer is providing for

themselves. Customers often have the illusion of control, when they do not.

10:01:42 PDT Question: We need to develop in an environment that mirrors production. Can Azure run F5 Networks for server load

balancing? Answer: No. Sorry. But the cloud machines can be on a VPN with your on-premises stuff, so you could prob enroll

the cloud VMs in your local f5.

10:02:17 PDT Question: can we integrate the domain we create in Azure with our desktop pcs in house? Answer: Yes, by creating a VPN from the cloud to your on-premises computers.

10:07:27 PDT Question: What is Microsoft LEARNING PARTNER? Answer: people who run training companies, and have a learning partner agreement with us.

10:14:37 PDT Question: What is the link again for downloading the lab works? Answer: http://aka.ms/azdcmva1

10:22:01 PDT Question: Is tomorrow’s schedule posted somewhere? Answer: Check out the event page to see topics covered tomorrow: http://aka.ms/azdevcamp2

10:25:07 PDT Question: What's the full url for Bret's azdcmva1 download? Answer: http://aka.ms/azdcmva1

10:25:20 PDT Question: Hi Guys, I missed the link to the labs could you please repost? Answer: http://aka.ms/azdcmva1

10:25:41 PDT Question: Hi, can you please type the URL for lab downloads here Answer: http://aka.ms/azdcmva1

10:25:51 PDT Question: can you put the link on here? Answer: http://aka.ms/azdcmva1

10:26:12 PDT Question: Please post the link displayed at the beginning to the sample classroom examples. Thanks. Answer: http://aka.ms/azdcmva1

10:34:08 PDT Question: A cloud service creates a virtual network to allow the servers to communicate? Can servers communicate

with each other in a cloud service without being in the same virtual network? Answer: No, at least not over the local network. They could communicate, but it would go out, and come back in the

load balancer if they aren't on the vlan. This is because only your machines can communicate with your machines.

10:35:04 PDT Question: I think it was Bret who mentioned that after the 30 day/60 day trial for Azure (with $200 limit) the (up to) 10

websites etc. would still be available? Can you elaborate a bit? Answer: Everyone gets ten basic web sites for free, for life. Regardless of your account status or other azure usage.

10:35:40 PDT Question: Is it possible to perform remote debugging to a VM running SharePoint 2010-2013 on the Windows Azure

infrastructure? Answer: Yes, but it is a fairly new capability. 10:37:51 PDT

Question: Thanks Brian. I have a few I will be moving then! And they'll be editable etc after trial expires if I

understand correctly. Answer: the web sites are fully functional after the trial, but look at the features the free sites get to make sure they

meet your needs. Scroll down to features by tier: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/web-sites/. For example you can't use a custom domain.

10:39:01 PDT Question: Does this mean, we can transfer an entire website to be hosted on the Azure Cloud Services? such a a

health or school site that is already hosted? Answer: In general, yes. You would have to look at all of the components (databases, file usage, etc). But a regular

website, yes.

10:40:02 PDT Question: Do the mail services also transfer? Answer: Depends how you are leveraging email. Do you mean hosting your email boxes for your domain? Then no,

that is office 365 or outlook.com. If you mean your app sends emails, then yes.

10:40:29 PDT Question: Ah ok so it would be websitename.azure.com rather than some custom domain customdomain.com in

DNS? Answer: yes, when it is free. I stepped it up one above free so I could use my customer domain name. The pricing is

so cheap, it hasn't been an issue.

10:41:51 PDT Question: What is the difference between fault domain and update domain? Answer: Fault domains are created to protect you against datacenter faults. There are always two FD. Update

Domains are used for rolling out updates (by you or azure). You can have as many UD as you want (well, there is a limit somewhere). These domains are orthogonal. So if there is a fault (power outage?) during an update, you don't lose ALL of your stuff, just half or a third.

10:43:07 PDT Question: Does this also include the mail settings, as emails for the professors? Physicians? Students? Knights?

Developers? Answer: Hosting mailboxes would be on Office365, which isn't my specialty. It is a product that runs on top of Azure

though.

10:43:41 PDT Question: creating SQL server was great and quick but how I create tables, etc if I don't remote desktop there? Answer: using code, or any regular SQL tools that you use today (visual studio, sql server manager, etc).

10:45:06 PDT Question: If I create "Availability Set" (for IIS) do I need to deploy my web-code manually in each of them or

deploying on one will automatically deploy on others? Answer: You deploy once, and we replicate to all the servers, using the rolling update domains so it happens over a

short window of time. You can reduce the number of UD to shorten this, but then that exposes you to more downtime risk. You can also do VIP swaps, which they will get to soon. This is where you deploy to a second set of machines, and then swap them at the load balancer when the code is ready.

10:45:22 PDT Question: Can you mirror across data centers? Answer: Yes. SQL Server allows this, and Azure storage does this as well.

10:46:00 PDT Question: so, is it impossible to run scripts on SQL server from remote machine? Answer: yes, just like any other SQL Server.

10:46:08 PDT Question: Great presentation guys! Big thumbs up! Answer: Hey Skipc! Thanks so much for the feedback. Lots of GREAT content coming....!

10:47:40 PDT Question: Are there 'Best Practices' documentation for Azure architectures? Answer: Hey Xebra -- Check out this http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/develop/net/guidance/.

10:47:42 PDT Question: how are firewalls managed? What protects the servers from DoS attacts? Answer: our datacenter fabric is always monitoring that. But we cannot stop a DOS attach, because we don't know

what is a DOS attack, and what is a lot of traffic because you had a big advertisement. If you call support and tell them you suspect a DOS we will work with you. Also, any app, on any server, needs to have its own protection, for example detecting and throttling a bad acting IP address. This is often at the IIS/Apache level, and not in the web site itself.

10:49:22 PDT Question: can we get geo-replication in Office 365 (SharePoint)? Answer: I'm not sure. Office 365 is not a product we specialize it.

10:50:15 PDT Question: Out of curiosity, are most of these options available (Virtual Machines, Cloud Service, SQL Databases)

available for use by Xbox games (for example, did Respawn use VM's for Titanfall?) Answer: Xbox games run servers in Azure, but they have special ways of doing that because of the xbox security

and special software they run. So yes, but it's a bit special. Id@Xbox has said they have different requirements (independent game developers).

10:50:54 PDT Question: How about DNS? If I spin a VM and use it for for name resolution? Are the ip addresses static? Answer: Today, public IP addresses are not static. That is something we are working on for a future release. There

are tricks though.

10:51:42 PDT Question: i have an old vm... i want to add the vm agent so i can manage users and passwords etc. Answer: I am sorry, I don't know that situation. I will flag so someone else can answer.

10:55:26 PDT Question: Are custom VMs downloadable for use locally within HyperV or do they only work in Azure? Answer: They work anywhere where VHDs will work, including locally on Hyper-v.

10:56:37 PDT Question: Is licensing cost (OS, SQL, etc) included in the pricing? Answer: For OS, yes (windows, Linux). For software (SharePoint, SQL, etc) that depends on the image. In SQL

Azure, the sql license is included. If you install the software, you have to provide the license. Others cost a bit more, and rent you the license as you need it. You have to check each image you are using.

10:57:29 PDT Question: To contact the speakers. Will they provide their emails? Answer: Their info is shown during the breaks. And if you use Bing with their names, you will find their blogs, which

have email/contact forms on them.

11:01:23 PDT Question: Do you get charged for these DR VMs if they're configured but kept powered off? Answer: If they are off, then you are not paying for cores/cpus. But you will have to pay the small storage fee for the

disks they use that are in azure storage.

11:03:36 PDT Question: I really like the use of Dev testing on Azure, but if I develop thick client apps that need to deploy to XP,

Vista, 7, and 8, can I create VMs to do this? I don't see consumer OS images, but could I create VHDs locally and send them up to Azure to use? Answer: Today you cannot run desktop OSs on Azure. Customers who do that today are deploying to a version of

Windows Server that is close to the desktop version, since they are so similar.

11:08:00 PDT Question: what was the lab url? Answer: You can find the lab here: http://aka.ms/azdcmva1

11:09:44 PDT Question: Where can we find ready to use examples of mobile apps/sites ready to deploy on Azure? Answer: I would try the Windows Azure Training Kit. It has examples, demos, labs, and samples for

everything. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8396

11:10:14 PDT Question: Is a VPN required in order to set up continuous integration deployments using Visual studio online? Answer: No, but that is the most common way people do it.

11:10:38 PDT Question: Will Xbox create a mobile adapter for interactive kinetic activity? Answer: That's not really something we can answer here today.

11:15:27 PDT Question: Does the Visual studio VM you can create allow you to run Windows Phone emulators? Answer: I haven't checked in a bit, but no. Because the emulator is a VM, and you can't nest VMs.

11:19:28 PDT Question: I can't watch the Lesson on my iPad? Do you know why? Answer: I believe they use flash and Silverlight for the video, and the iPad doesn't support those.

11:20:50 PDT Question: what was the MVA voucher code? Answer: Visit http://aka.ms/MVA-Voucher and enter the following voucher code AzDevCamp1 (offer expires on May

23, 2014)

11:25:12 PDT Question: Where would you suggest storing logs? Answer: There is a diagnostics feature in Azure which when configured will grab logs (normal windows stuff, or stuff

your app generates) and can export it to azure storage. Sometimes blog, sometimes table, based on the nature of the data.

11:25:32 PDT Question: Is there any way to save things in the Event Log before the VM is discarded, or do we need to purely use

Storage for critical events. Answer: Yes, with azure diagnostics, you can grab event log stuff and store it in azure storage.

11:32:53 PDT Question: Does Azure's load balancer work similar to F5 Networks? So if I develop in Azure I can be assured that it

will run on premise using F5? Answer: Yes, but depending on how a load balancer behaves is usually a bad smell to your architecture, it is a hint

you might be doing something 'wrong'. The LB is non-sticky though. Too many customers run their on-premises LB in sticky mode, and this is usually because the web site is built poorly.

11:33:05 PDT Question: Did I understood right. I can have server in a VM with some customized service on it. I can stop it, capture

it and replicate it to several VMs within availability set. And still keep the original VM which I can use for further development? Answer: Yep.

11:48:29 PDT Question: PLEASE SHARE VOUCHE CODE FOR ATTENDING THIS EVENT Answer: Voucher code is AzDevCamp1

11:48:43 PDT Question: Can the slides be shared please? Answer: Slides are available from the FAQ tab
