Case Study: Effects of MicroShield 360 Antimicrobial within the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, NV

Overview: From June 22nd, 2018 to July 13th, 2018 MicroShield 360 worked in conjunction with UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada to test the efficacy of MicroShield 360 antimicrobial product within their Performance Institute. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare contamination levels across 40 surfaces (20 treated and 20 control) during the course of 1 week tested at night then again in the morning. This equated to 560 samples over the 7 days. The objective is to compare the data to see if there is a reduction in contamination levels between the control and treated surfaces. Scope: MicroShield 360 used an ATP meter and swabs to test all surfaces. ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) measures surface contamination/bio-load levels and provides real-time insight through an RLU (relative light unit) reading. The higher the reading, the more contaminated the surface. MicroShield 360 uses 100RLU as its measure of “Very Clean” which is important in such high-risk environments where pathogens could have exposure to open wounds. MicroShield 360 was granted access to the facility every evening and again first thing in the morning for testing purposes. Testing was to be performed during these hours as it was designated hours least likely for people to be within the facility. We did this to control for external variables and their effects on the surfaces being tested. MicroShield 360 selected 20 different surfaces various hard, semi-soft and porous surfaces within the facility spanning weight training equipment, grappling mats and athletic training equipment. 20 items were marked with green tape (treated) and 20 items were marked with blue tape (control). A MicroShield 360 certified applicator electrostatically applied a disinfectant, allowed it to dry then followed up by electrostatically applying MicroShield 360 Antimicrobial to the items designated “treated”. To control for uniform testing templates were made for swabbing. The same tester would start on left side and swipe back and forth a total of 4 times while not rolling the swab. The swab was immediately put into the ATP meter and a reading was generated 15 seconds later. This data was then input into an excel spreadsheet under the respective item. Cleaning protocols within the facility were not altered during our testing time frames to show that MicroShield 360 would not be hindered by such practices. Its important to note that the original scope planned for 7 straight days but 2 days in we decided to postpone the remaining 5. We were in the middle of international fight week and the fighters were using the facility at all hours impeding on our ability to control for surface interaction. We then continued testing immediately following the weekend event when the facility went back to “normal” operation. We ran analytics including all 7 days and ran a study backing out the first 2 days. The final numbers in the results section account for all 7 day unless specifically indicated otherwise.

Results: 560 data samples stored in excel were analyzed to determine the difference between treated and control surfaces. The difference in total ATP defined as the summation of each test surface across all 7 days for both treated and control showed that MicroShield 360 treated surfaces reduced contamination by 50.30% (figure 1). This number jumps to 59% when excluding the 2 days of fight week. Average ATP scores for control surfaces were 398RLU while treated came in at 193RLU. Our database shows avg ATP scores across gyms/wrestling mats to be 820RLU which serves as a proxy for comparative reasons. To prove that MicroShield 360 is constantly reducing contamination levels we then analyzed the percent change in treated and control surfaces from the night to morning. We found that control surfaces saw an average reduction of 5.3% while MicroShield 360 treated surfaces saw a reduction of 49.19% or a 161% percent difference. This shows that by having MicroShield 360 on a surface it single handedly reduces contamination levels on that surface by >50%. Figure 1:

*The above chart shows “Gym Avg.-Untreated” which is a culmination of avg ATP test results from weight rooms and wrestling mats from 15+ Universities and commercial gyms that MicroShield 360 services (820RLU). It then shows UFC’s average contamination levels both before (398RLU) and after (193RLU) treatment for comparative purposes. Finally, we looked at the distribution of numbers around the 100RLU “Very Clean” metric. We found that of the 280 control surfaces reading <=100RLU showed up 42 times. For the 280 tested surfaces marked treated we saw 124 instances. This equates to a 195% improvement. Data: The following charts show the raw data numbers. Chart 1 is the non-treated (control) data set while chart 2 is the MicroShield 360 (treated) data set. This data was used to perform the analytics which generated the above information.
