Page 4: Micronutrients for Adolescents

WHY DO ADOLESCENTS NEED

ADDITIONAL IRON?

• Due to increased growth, the need of adolescents for iron

is increased

• Females, especially, need additional iron when

menstruation starts because of the loss of blood; and

since their iron requirement cannot be met by their food

intake, supplementation is needed

• Males, however, can attain their iron requirement from

their food intake
