You are the environment.

You are covered with bacteria, inside and out.

Human microbiome

a large community of organisms that occupy a distinct region

Ways bacteria impact humans

• Helpful bacteria• Food production

• Neutral bacteria• Foot odor

• Harmful bacteria• Food poisoning

Note: In no way is this list complete, rather, it merely serves to prove a point. Read up on bacteria, they are fascinating.

Helpful bacteria

• Food production• Yogurt, cheese, sour cream, buttermilk

• Lactic acid bacteria• Produce lactic acid as the major product of carbohydrate fermentation.

Page 7: Microbiology Basics Reznicek Rock Bridge High School 2014-2015.

Neutral bacteria

• Foot odor• Although unpleasant, having stinky feet has no influence on your fitness as an

organism• Does not significantly decrease ability to survive/reproduce.

• Caused by brevibacterium linens• Lives everywhere on human skin• Produces sulfur compounds, which account for the smell

Harmful bacteria

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
