Stanley is friendly with children, cats, dogs and strangers! He appears to be housebroken although he prefers his time outdoors. Stanley is a Boston Terrier/Pug mix (not sure what that other mix is but it gives him some height) and his estimated DOB is 07/27/2004. Approx. weight is 35 lbs.  Sadly, his previous owner had to sur-render his long time, beloved companion due to some unpredictable life hurdles

which had nothing to do with Stanley. He just couldn’t give Stanley the life he de-served anymore. Stanley’s adoption fee is 50% off in honor of November being Senior Pet Month. Stanley needs a hero; are you it?

All PPAS puppies and dogs are up to date on all of their vaccines (including rabies if age prohibiting), and will be micro chipped and registered in the adopter’s name at the time of adoption. Adopters get a free consultation at Cottonwood Animal Hospital within 14 days of adoption. Any dog that is six months of age or older will be tested for Heartworms and if found negative, will be kept on Heartworm prevention during their shelter stay, after the adoption it is up to the adopter to continue the highly recommended Heartworm preventative treatment. Also all PPAS shelter dogs are treated with a monthly topical fl ea/tick preventative and we ask that adopters continue that treatment as well.

The shelter is open to the public: Mon, Wed, Thurs 11-6 and Sat 11-4.  If you are interested in this dog or puppy, please either email Prairie Paws Animal Shelter at [email protected], for an application visit our website @ prairiepaws.org or call 785.242.2967 for more information.

Help make the Holiday Merrier for Medicalodge ClientsAll 93 clients at Medicalodge are diagnosed with a mental illness. 98% of our clients are on state assistance (Medicaid), so they have very little income to purchase items. Without the community’s involvement and support, not all clients will receive a gift. Most of our clients enjoy getting out and shopping. Normally they are unable to do so, due to lack of funds. We felt a “shopping gift” would be a wonderful opportunity for them. This is why your contribution is so very important. All monetary donations will be used to provide these special gift vouchers or to purchase items for our clients. If you would prefer to purchase items, you may contact us for a list. Clients are in need of clothing in sizes, 2X, 3X, 4X etc. Clients also enjoy DVD movies, books, music, Bibles (large print), jewelry, perfume/cologne and regular or diabetic candy. We would prefer to have all donations to the facility by December 14th. Medicalodges thanks everyone who has helped in the past and is planning to help in the future. Christmas is a special time to refl ect and celebrate the birth of Christ and give to those in need. Acts 20:35 “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

patient support to serving the needs of homeless persons,

United Way reaches thousands of individuals annually. It has distributed over $1.4 million

Denver, CO 1887 - A woman, a priest, two ministers and a rabbi walked into a bar. What sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, instead created a legacy of 125+ years of community impact - ultimately touching over 50 million people annually. Little did they know that the $21,700 they raised would eventually top out at over $5 billion raised annually in communities all around the globe.

Paola, KS 2014 – A group of 9 individuals from various walks of life, representing companies large and small, known collectively as the United Way of Paola Board of Directors, made the decision that in order to continue and improve the impact of local United Way funds, they would have to think more strategically about how the United Way of Paola operates. Their desire was not to simply redistribute funds around the community, but to create measurable impact for the individuals and organizations that most need it in Miami County. The results will be forthcoming…

Our HistorySince 1982 the United Way of Paola has been serving organizations and

individuals in Miami County. Having raised and distributed over $1.4 million during that time, the United Way has impacted thousands of individuals. UW has funded a myriad of services including helping children with medical needs, adults with cancer, mentoring programs, homelessness, and food support to name a few.

Each year, the United Way of Paola Board of Directors reviews applica-tions from community organizations and allocates available funds to those organizations. The Board’s job is to vet organizations and ideally provide an objective way of distributing funds in order to have a measurable impact in the community.

Like many organizations across the country, United Way has come to realize that the nature of giving is changing. One way this is happening is through the increasing scrutiny of how charitable dollars are spent and the measurable impact they have (or don’t have). Gone are the days of just giving a percentage of earnings to charity because it was the right thing to do. In today’s world, donors, particularly younger donors, want to know the impact that their dona-tions will have. They care more about the root cause of issues. They are just as charitable with their money, it’s the “how they give” that has changed.

As a result, United Way, which has traditionally been a transactional orga-nization, has seen the need to change. Where the majority of the funds raised have come from workplace campaigns (in Paola’s case over 75%), no longer can UW simply rely on the continuing generosity of employees (and employ-

ers) to make contributions and then redirect those funds through the allocation process to agencies of need. Impact is the most important factor for donors and without it; agencies will struggle in the future.

Changes in the workplace are also beginning to change the nature of giving. First, the nature of work has changed. Employee tenure is shorter now than anytime in history. Many workers are opting to work independently or under contractual arrangements. Second, companies are beginning to take a more active role in community issues. Instead of simply giving employees the oppor-tunity to give through a workplace campaign, employees are often engaged at a deeper level with company initiatives within the community, both volunteering their time and sharing their resources.

As a result of all these changes, the United Way of Paola has undertaken some “soul-searching” to fi gure out what our future will be. The board has determined that now is the time to take a hard look at how we operate, from raising money to measuring the impact UW funds have in the community. The following are two major initiatives the board has begun to tackle. 1. Who are we and who do we serve? Did you know that over 80% of our

agencies serve those in need throughout Miami County? As one board member recently put it – “Need knows no boundaries”. The United Way of Paola is exploring who we are and how we defi ne ourselves. This will likely include a name change to one that more accurately refl ects where UW works. And it most certainly has changed how we operate on a yearly basis, with more emphasis on community impact within three major areas of need (health, education, and income).

2. How do we increase our capacity to serve the community? Until now, the United Way of Paola has operated solely with a volunteer board of direc-tors. Like any volunteer-led community agency, we face challenges. Time. Resources. Knowledge. Raising funds, ensuring they are distributed and used appropriately, and reporting have become much more sophisticated in today’s world. As a result the board is looking at how a staffi ng component might positively impact what we can do for the community. Our hope is that by hiring a staff person, even in a part-time role, we will be able to raise and distribute more funds in the community ultimately impacting more individuals in need.As a community-based, volunteer-led organization with strong roots in Paola

and Miami County, we welcome your input and thoughts on the direction of our United Way. We feel this is an exciting time to reinvent who we are and ultimately shape our future for years to come. And in doing so, years from now someone might look back on us like they do those fi ve individuals from Denver.
