MUSIC
This year is the 50th anniversary of the death of Vaughan Williams inAugust 1958. As the Choir was not in residence in August, there is a focuson music by Vaughan Williams and some composers associated with himon 11 and 12 October, the latter date being that of his birth in 1872.At Evensong on Saturday 15 November, the College commemoratesCanon Pat Magee, a former Chorister, Choral Scholar, Undergraduateand Chaplain who died on 20 March this year. The music chosen reflectshis own taste: much of it was sung at his funeral in Salisbury Cathedral.Among visiting organ recitalists is Roger Williams who, as a researchstudenthere in the latesixties, workedonSchoenberg. Twogreat twentiethcentury composers are honoured: on Saturday 18 October music byHowells is featured at Evensong, which will be attended by members ofthe Herbert Howells Society; Matyas Seiber’s Missa brevis will be heardon Thursday 20 November as part of a Cambridge-based celebration ofHungarian music. The College’s resident string quartet, the Dante Quartet, will lead theorchestra in Fauré’s Requiem on Sunday 2 November. This year sees thesecond Concerts at King’s series, represented in Chapel this term by areturn of Elgar’s The Kingdom on Monday 1 December.
