As I look over this catalog, I’m amazed by the quality of knowledge and information provided by our esteemed authors on filmmaking subjects that, until only a few years ago, were rarely discussed outside of the industry. Now anyone — whether a professional or someone just starting out — can read these books and gain a remarkably thorough understanding of the many skills involved in filmmaking.

As we add even more courses to our new MWP Film School, and with our best-selling books now available through Kindle and other digital platforms, MWP continues to grow as one of the finest providers of filmmaking education. In addition, through our Divine Arts imprint, this year we will launch “Sacred Journeys”— a collection of my last three documentary films — as a touring theatrical experience, on DVD, and as a video stream.

Thank you for journeying with us on our continuing mission to engage and inspire! Michael Wiese

the location sound biblehow to record professional dialog for film and tv

RIC VIeRS

George Lucas says fifty percent of a movie is sound. Great sound separates the men from the boys. Written by seasoned professional Ric Viers, author of The Sound Effects Bible, The Location Sound Bible explains how to achieve Hollywood-quality sound that will make your productions stand out from the rest.

The Location Sound Bible is a complete guide to recording dialog on location. Topics include audio basics, microphone selection, wireless systems, recording and mixing techniques, and the Ten Location Sound Commandments, but it’s more than just cables and connectors. This book takes you behind the scenes of Ric Viers’ work on feature films, television shows, broadcast news, courtroom dramas, music videos, and more.

“ Production sound is the cornerstone of the audio soundtrack for films. The quality of what is cap-tured on the set will determine everything else that will be put around it. Up until now, we haven’t had a go-to resource that could serve as a jumping off point in achieving the goal of getting the best sound possible on location, regardless of time or budget. Ric Viers has changed that. This book not only provides a wealth of knowledge about the equipment and resources needed to do the job properly, but also teaches the fundamental techniques required to capture great tracks from day one. Finally, a guide that will raise the quality of anyone’s film, independent or big budget. On top of all that, it’s easy and fun to read, and should be required reading not only for location sound crews, but directors, cinematographers, producers, and anyone else interested in elevating their art.”

— Marc Fishman, Re-Recording Mixer, Crash, Baby Mama, Get Him to the Greek

RIC VIeRS has worked in the film and television industry for more than fifteen years. His location sound credits include hundreds of productions for nearly every major television network, Universal Studios, Dateline, Good Morning America, Disney, and many others. Known as the “Rock and Roll Professor of Sound,” Viers has hosted several video series including Rode University, Rode Rage, and The Detroit Chop Shop Video Diaries. His sound design work has been used in major motion pictures, television shows, radio programs, and video games. In 2007, Viers launched his own label, Blastwave FX, to celebrate the release of his 100th sound effects library. Viers is the author of The Sound Effects Bible (page 44) and is considered to be the world’s largest independent provider of sound effects, with more than 250,000 sounds and over 600 sound effects libraries to his credit. He has produced sound libraries for numerous publishers, including Adobe, Apple, Blastwave FX, Sony, Sound Ideas, and The Hollywood edge.

JON FITzGeRALD

Industry veteran Jon Fitzgerald has developed a new manual for making socially relevant films on a low budget, from con-cept development through production, from marketing through distribution. In straightforward sections, with descriptive breakdowns for each category, the book presents a new para-digm for filmmaking in the modern age, including case studies on numerous films and advice from industry professionals on each topic. With Filmmaking For Change, creative artists will learn the keys to successfully producing and distributing the most powerful form of mass communication.

“ How to create a documentary from start to finish... A great book for filmmakers who want to create change.”

— Tom Farr, blogger: A Journey of Faith and Creativity

“Filmmaking has become the most powerful weapon in the world, what I call ‘a weapon of mass construction.’ Filmmaking for Change is this new movement’s instruction manual.”

— Louie Psihoyos, Academy Award winning filmmaker: The Cove

“ It’s hard to say exactly how to make a documentary, due to their unpredictable nature, but Filmmaking for Change manages to give useful tips, as well as touch on the most important aspects that should be focused on from day one.”

— erin Corrado, onemoviefivereviews.com

With a degree in Film Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara, JON FITzGeRALD directed his first film in 1994, and then co-founded the Slamdance Film Festival in 1995 and was the executive Director for the next two years before becoming the Festival Director at the American Film Institute (1997-99) and then the Santa Barbara and Abu Dhabi International Film Festivals. In 2003, he formed Right Angle Studios, a consulting firm that provided services to numerous film festivals and indie filmmakers. In 2009, Fitzgerald transitioned back into produc-tion, developing socially relevant films (The Back Nine, Dance Of Liberation, The Highest Pass). In 2011, Fitzgerald launched Cinecause.com, an intersection of socially relevant films, celebrities, news, and related causes. The film site provides a filter to quality films, while increasing aware-ness and donations to related causes around the world.

Make filM historyrewrite, reshoot, and recut the world’s greatest films

ROBeRT GeRST

Make Film History is an entirely new concept: a “read it–learn it–do it” introduction to the movies. It is both a book and a hands-on website. The book describes crucial moments when movies fundamentally changed. Reading the book, you enter the history of movies by learning what great filmmakers of the past ac-complished and how they did it. On the website, simple hands-on exercises put you in the place of (or next to) great filmmakers as they solved filmmaking problems. Working the web-page, you use simple hands-on filmmaking exercises and software already installed on your computer to introduce yourself to filmmaking by writing, shooting, cutting, and mixing as the great filmmakers did it. You watch — or second-guess — or do it yourself — as the building blocks of movies emerge. Make Film History unleashes the filmmaker in you.

Make Film History is for every movie lover who has ever asked, “How did they do that?” or ever said, “I’d like to make a movie, too!”

“ Robert Gerst has written a one-of-a kind book that brings alive the challenges of film directors over the evolution of moviemaking and inspires readers to create their own films sparked by the solutions to these challenges.”

— Gael Chandler, author: Film Editing: Great Cuts Every Filmmaker and Movie Lover Must Know

“ Robert Gerst has created a wonderful, and sometimes astonishing, new way to study the history of movies and, at the same time, learn moviemaking techniques. The sum total is an exciting experience like no other book I’ve ever read.”

— Paul Chitlik, Clinical Asst. Professor in Screenwriting, Loyola Marymount University Member, WGAW and The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences

ROBeRT GeRST, Ph.D., chairs the Liberal Arts Department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. He has taught film aesthetics and film history to thousands of designers, artists, and young filmmakers in North America, in online courses at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and to film students around the world. A veteran teacher who first cut movies standing at a Moviola, he brings a digital filmmaker perspective to the history of the movies.

dan o’bannon’s guide to screenplay structureinside tips from the writer of alien, total recall & return of the living dead

DAN O’BANNON with MATT R. LOHR

Dan O’Bannon (1946–2009), the acclaimed writer/director whose credits include Alien, Total Recall, and Return of the Living Dead, presents a masterful collection of the storytelling wisdom and in-sights that he used to create mega-hit classic motion pictures.

Dan O’Bannon famously crafted his screenplays using a self-designed system which he called “dynamic structure.” This book outlines how O’Bannon’s method differs from those of other well-known screenwriting gurus, and illustrates with examples from classic (and not-so-classic) films how dynamic structure can be applied to craft narrative and character. O’Bannon also

includes his insights on subjects such as the logic of the three-act structure, the role of the producer in screenplay development, and the psychological principle known as “hedonic adapta-tion,” which has a unique effect on the structuring of screen stories.

“ Written in a style that carefully blends the personal and the professional, Dan O’Bannon’s Guide to Screenplay Structure is more than a book. It is like an opportunity to sit down with a Hollywood insider over coffee and get the skinny on what it takes to make it in the business.”

— Dr. Gregory K. Allen, supervising professor, The Sprocket Guild

“ A successful screenwriter, Dan O’Bannon is more invested in great writing than in obeying rules. At the core of his book are twelve case studies of classic plays and scripts. The book analyzes each work with O’Bannon’s story structural system. It shows you how the rules apply and, perhaps equally important, when they don’t and why. the working filM directorhow to arrive, survive & thrive in the director’s chair – 2nd edition

CHARLeS WILKINSON

There are many books on the art of directing. The Working Film Director is the only book about the career itself. Building on the success and popularity of the 1st edition of The Working Director, this new edition adds entirely new and up-to-the-min-ute focus on the current world of the entry-level filmmaker, the filmmaker looking to move up, and the director who’s fighting to reinvent a once promising career. Readers learn where film-makers find the filmmaking skills they need, how to approach the so-critical first film, how to land that first directing job, and how to get a suddenly silent phone to start ringing again. Using examples from his three decades directing high-profile

productions, writer/director Charles Wilkinson shares a thousand lessons learned by himself and his fellow working directors.

This book demystifies the art of maintaining a career in directing film and television, dramati-cally illustrating how much of what it takes to work as a director actually has little to do with the technical side of directing. The book offers insights into how to cope with the unique emotional and social demands of the job, offering numerous tips on how to handle the intense levels of competition for every single project, and presenting vital insights on how to recognize, avoid, and even reverse the many career-busting missteps dotting the minefield that every successful director must face.

“ A must-read for anyone interested in making film or television their career, as well as those interested in film in general. I have never read a more comprehensive and informative study of the working director going through their creative paces.”

— Brent Karl Clackson, Producer, Dead Like Me, The Highlander, The Outer Limits

CHARLeS WILKINSON is an award-winning writer/director (Peace Out, Down Here, Max, Breach of Trust, The Highlander, Heart of the Storm). His recent documentary, Down Here, received criti-cal and audience success on the international festival circuit (Vancouver, Cleveland, Houston, Venice). His current film, Peace Out, was named Most Popular Canadian Documentary at the 2011 Vancouver International Film Festival as well as at the 2012 Available Light International Film Festival. It has been selected at numerous film festivals including Hot Docs 2012, North America’s largest documentary festival. His website is charleswilkinson.com

crowdfunding for filMMakers the way to a successful film campaign

JOHN T. TRIGONIS

Crowdfunding for Filmmakers offers practical information, tips, and tactics for launching a successful film financing campaign, utilizing today’s technological and social innovations, and aug-menting each step with an added personal touch. The book examines various ways to meet and exceed one’s crowdfunding goal through chapters on team building, audience outreach, and crowdfunder etiquette, along with a section containing case studies from successful film campaigns.

Addressing the fact that most filmmakers don’t consider them-selves crowdfunders, never mind entrepreneurs, and therefore rarely take the time to research other campaign strategies, the author details his own crowdfunding success story — raising $6,300 to make the award-winning short film Cerise. Crowdfunding for Filmmakers is an invaluable tool to ensure a triumphant climax to a rigorous crowdfunding campaign.

“ Crowdfunding clearly isn’t just about raising money. John thoroughly understands that it goes so much deeper than that, and with his practical, folksy wisdom, he explains everything you’d ever need to know about one of the most important things ever to hit the indie film world.”

— Gregor Collins, Actor, Writer, Producer, It’s a Good Day to Die

“ No one should begin a crowdfunding campaign without first reading John T. Trignonis’ Crowdfunding for Filmmakers, which demystifies the crowdfunding process and ensures a successful campaign.”

— Jayce Bartok, filmmaker, The Cake Eaters and blogger, MovieMaker; and Tiffany Bartok, filmmaker, Tiny Dancer

Writer and filmmaker JOHN T. TRIGONIS has published work in a variety of literary journals all over the world. He launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for his seventh short film, Cerise, through which he raised a total of $6,300 — $1,300 over his initial goal of $5,000 — in only three months, solely through Facebook and Twitter. Once the film was finished, John spearheaded a series of crowdfunding “Crusades” and raised an additional $2,000 with which to submit the film to festivals. Cerise has since screened at over a dozen venues, participated in the Cannes Court Métrage, was nominated for four awards, and won an “Award of Merit” at Indie Fest. When not working on his creative endeavors, John teaches creative writing and humanities courses at various universities across New Jersey as a freelance professor.

Master shots vol 2100 ways to shoot great dialogue scenes

CHRISTOPHeR KeNWORTHY

best seller

Building on the success of the best-selling Master Shots, this book goes much deeper, revealing the great directors’ secrets for making the most of the visual during the usual static dialogue scene. A strong scene is determined from where you put the camera and how you position and direct your actors. This is especially true when shooting dialogue. The techniques in Master Shots, Vol. 2 ensure that every plot point, every emotion, and every subtle meaning is communicated clearly.

This is the first book to show how important it is to shoot dialogue well. What’s the point of opening your scene with a great camera move, if you then just shoot the actors like a couple of talking heads? Master Shots, Vol. 2 gives you control of dialogue scenes, whether you’re shooting two characters or a room filled with multiple conversations.

Using examples from well-known films, the book gives 100 techniques, lavishly illustrated with movie frame-grabs, and overhead diagrams, to show exactly what you need to get the required result. At all times, the techniques have been broken down to their core points, so they will work on a fully equipped Hollywood set, or with the most basic video camera.

“ A terrific sequel to the first Master Shots. If there’s a cool way to move the camera, Kenworthy has explained it to us. I can’t wait to get this book into my students’ hands.”

— John Badham, director, Saturday Night Fever, WarGames; author, I’ll Be in My Trailer

CHRISTOPHeR KeNWORTHY has worked as a writer, director, and producer for the past ten years. He directed the feature film The Sculptor, which played to sold-out screenings in Australia and received strong reviews. Recent works include sketch comedy for the BBC’s Scallywagga, a title sequence for National Geographic Channel, visual effects for 3D World, music videos for Pieces of eight Records and elefant Records, and an animated wall projection for The Blue Room Theatre in Perth, Australia. Kenworthy is the author of the best-selling Master Shots, two novels: The Winter Inside and The Quality of Light, and many short stories. Current projects include screenwriting, several directing assignments, and the development of additional Master Shots applications.

film editinggreat cuts every filmmaker and movie lover must know

GAeL CHAnDLer

Film Editing: Great Cuts Every Filmmaker and Movie Lover Must Know makes the invis-ible art of editing visible by using nearly 600 frames from popular, recent films. The frames, accompanied by brisk descriptions, make it perfectly suited for quick study readers who like to ‘gaze’ rather than ‘graze’ and don’t want

to read a book. Written by an editor and the author of Cut by Cut: Editing Your Film or Video - 2nd edition (page 8), it shows how editors can make or break a movie.

This one-of-a-kind book is your ‘must have’ cheat sheet to learning to make great cuts. Great for filmmakers, students or anyone who wants to see how the editor makes us believe. youTubers, prepare yourselves to add juice to your creations.

“ Those of us in the movie business often say that if we notice something, that means we didn’t do a good job. Our job as filmmakers, is to do what we do as seamlessly as possible. Gael Chandler takes a microscope to those seams to show the subtleties and techniques used by seasoned profession-als, using words and pictures that an average movie-goer or up-and-coming filmmaker can appreci-ate and experiment with. This dissection, together with quotes of working directors and editors, make Film editing a practical and aesthetic addition to any film buff, film student, or filmmaker’s arsenal.”

— Victoria rose Sampson, writer, director, film and sound editor; MPSe Award for Best Sound editing: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Speed, Romancing the Stone, The River; Grand prize winner for writing and directing, Harley-Davidson commercial contest short film, Her Need for Speed

“ A comprehensive and easy-to-read description of the techniques editors use to seamlessly tell stories. The use of film frames clearly illustrates the editing concepts. A must read for any film student, or anyone just interested in the art of editing.”

— nancy Morrison, A.C.e., editor, Desperate Housewives, Starter Wife, Malcolm in the Middle

living with spirits10 days in the jungle with ayahuasca

A FILM BY MICHAeL WIeSe

exPeCTeD reLeASe – WInTer 2012

Ayahuasca is a visionary plant brew. Whomever is brave enough to drink it will meet spirits and have visions of other worlds and realms. In South America, a Peruvian shaman may go on a “dieta” or retreat in the jungle to drink and live with the spirits of the jungle medicines in order to receive instructions and insights on how to heal. Through the auspices of Peruvian shaman Don José Campos, filmmaker Michael Wiese undertook a 10 day “dieta” where he ate a special diet and drank plant medicines. This video diary-style film documents this extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime experience.

the shaMan & ayahuascajourneys to sacred realms

A FILM BY MICHAeL WIeSe

As interest in Ayahuasca grows, so does the question of how to explain this mysterious phenomenon to the uninitiated seeker.

“Filmmaker Michael Wiese’s latest documentary meets this challenge with remarkable grace. Wiese and his companions — his wife, photog-rapher Geraldine Overton, and their charismatic translator, Alberto Roman — go on a trip to the Amazon to meet internationally known shaman Don José Campos. Shot in various locations around Peru, the film explores the role of this powerful plant medicine in Amazonian culture through a series of vignettes and intimate interviews with Don

José and several of his close associates. Each person brings a unique perspective to the emerging picture, weaving threads of indigenous wisdom, contemporary science, and existential philosophy into the complex tapestry of the Ayahuasca experience. In mind-bending portraits of jaguar-skinned shamans enshrouded by seeing-eye vines, the spiritual alchemy between man and nature that takes place in the Ayahuasca realms is magically revealed — a deeply introspective story of healing and discovery.”

— Stephen Thomas, RealitySandwich.com

“ A fantastic adventure! Michael and Geraldine are bold souls. I was especially inspired by Pablo Amaringo. Terence McKenna had talked about him a lot. I’m sorry I never had the opportunity to meet him, but the film certainly captured something of his spirit and his painting.”

— Howard Rheingold, futurist, author, Higher Creativity with Willis Harman

the shaMan & ayahuascajourneys to sacred realms

DON JOSÉ CAMPOS

“ This remarkable and beautiful book suggests a path back to understanding the profound healing and spiritual powers that are here for us in the plant world. This extraordinary book shows a way toward reawakening our respect for the natural world, and thus for ourselves. I pray that we are not too proud, not too entitled, not too arrogant to heed the invitation.”

Jacques Cousteau tried. Pioneer dolphin researcher John Lilly said it couldn’t be done. But in 1978 a ship of fools set out to swim in the open oceans with wild dolphins. Taking a cue from Aristotle, who said, “dolphins care for man and enjoy his music,” the filmmakers played an ‘underwater piano’ and for

three days interacted with a school of wild dolphins. A “close encounter of the aquatic kind,” this classic film documents the first recorded human-wild dolphin encounter in modern times. With Ric O’Barry (The Cove).
