Since 1985, TYR has been a global force. Not an acronym.According to Norse mythology, TYR was the God of warriors anddeity among all athletes – a fierce competitor revered by hisfriends and foes alike. If you’re competitive by nature, like us, youcan relate.

Historically speaking, TYR is also a global brand whose rootsstem from swimming. Not just within America, but from abroad. For example, our Vice President of International Sales is HansFassnacht – a 2-Time World Record holder and Silver Medalist inthe 1972 Munich Olympics. Even our current roster of elite athletes is made from an international contingency, such as 2-Time Olympic Gold Medalist, Yana Klochkova.

Since the day we firmly planted our flag into the ground, TYR has set the benchmark when it comes to innovative competitive swimwear, swimming technologies and multi-sportapparel. At TYR, we live and dream swimming. It’s in our DNA.And that’s the kind of passion and commitment that goes intoeach and every one of our suits and accessories.

All said, we’d be remiss not to mention that TYR is much morethan a brand, a graceful logo or authentic competitive swimwear. It’s a direction. A direction based on not only where we’ve been, but where we’re going. TYR.

Always in front.

This issue of Swimming Worldmarks our 45th anniversary. Forclose to a half century, Swimming

World has been published monthly, reporting on the people and eventsthat have made news in our greatsport.

To put 45 years into some perspec-tive, consider that this month’s swim-mer featured on the cover—KosukeKitajima—holds the current worldrecord in the 200 meter breaststrokewith a time of 2:09.42. Forty-five yearsago, the world record in this event was2:36.5. In fact, the current Mastersworld record for the 200 breast in themen’s 45-49 age group is better thanthe world record of 45 years ago!

Just as the sport has changed overthe years, so, too, has the magazine.Forty-five years ago, Swimming Worldwas all black-and-white, including thefront cover. That’s a far cry fromtoday’s publication, which featurescolor throughout each issue.

The magazine’s production processhas also gone from what was thenstandard in the industry to an all-digi-tal system today. In fact, due to ourability to go digital, readers can nowdownload every issue of SwimmingWorld published since 1960 online atwww.SwimInfo.com. Access to thissection is free when you subscribe orrenew your Swimming World sub-scription on the internet.

More importantly, as SwimmingWorld has evolved over the past 45years, so, too, has our audience. Weare constantly determining whatkinds of stories would be of mostinterest to our readers, then changingthe content accordingly.

In this issue, we have reorganizedcontent into various areas of interest. We hope you will find the presenta-tion of new material to be informative, educational and entertaining.

New Goings-on at SwimInfo.comEarly last month, we introduced a

new element to our website,SwimInfo.com. This new section, which becomes accessible with eithera new subscription or renewal toSwimming World and/or SwimmingTechnique, currently contains all backissues of these publications in PDFformat.

In addition, we will be adding othercomponents to the Premium Sectionon SwimInfo.com. Be sure to get youraccess so you won’t miss out on any ofthe excitement!

We appreciate the many compli-ments we’ve received concerning oursite. We continue to see growing num-bers of visitors each month.

Kate Ziegler started her swimming career at age 6 on theGreat Falls Rapids swim team. Year-round swimming came acouple of years later, and she experienced the usual ups anddowns of age group swimming. Kate qualified for Zones as a10-year-old in the 50 and 100 meter free and 50 meter fly,and again as a 12-year-old in the 50 meter fly.

Kate started the 2002-03 short course season with someoutstanding performances. She placed sixth in the 400 shortcourse meters free (4:14.20) and fourth in the 800 free(8:37.99) at the World Cup meet in Long Island in November2002. Unfortunately, soon afterward, she broke her left footand a toe on her right foot with severe ligament damage inboth.

In mid-June, at only the second meet after Kate’s cast wasremoved—and her last as a 13-14 swimmer—she posted per-sonal best long course times of 4:24.24 in the 400 meter free,9:04.56 in the 800 free and 17:10.36 in the 1500 free.

So far in her brief career as a 15-year-old, Kate has brokena total of nine PVS records in both short and long course. Shealso has Olympic Trials cuts in the 400 free (4:18.33) and 1500free (16:33.29).

Kate was selected for the U.S. NationalJunior Team that competed in Australia thismonth, and was recently named the 2002-03Potomac Valley Swimming Outstanding Athletefor both the 13-14 and 15-16 girls.

Kevin Behrens of the Munster Swim Club recent-ly completed an outstanding 10-and-under career inIndiana Swimming. At the Indiana Age Group LongCourse State Championships, Kevin won all five ofhis events with five NAG Top 16 times: 50 meterback, 35.27; 100 back, 1:15.53; 50 fly, 33.38; 100 fly,1:14.12; and 200 IM, 2:44.06. He also swam onMunster’s two championship relays: the 200 medley(2:31.25) and 200 free (2:12.91). Kevin was award-ed the high-point trophy for his age group.

Two weeks later, at the Central Zone Championships inIndianapolis, Kevin again won the 10-and-under boys high-pointaward. He placed first in five events (50 free, 30.08; 50 back,34.83; 100 back, 1:15.19; 50 fly, 32.86; and 200 IM, 2:43.29) andcame in second in the 100 free (1:06.72). John Krick, TeamIndiana’s head coach and Kevin’s coach at Munster, presentedhim with the trophy.

Kevin first qualified for Indiana’s state meet as a 7-year-old.During the next three years, he won 14 individual state titles(including eight in backstroke) and swam on nine state champi-onship relays.

Last July, Elizabeth Beiselwas taking one last shot at therecord books in her 10-and-under swimming career. Andwhat a shot it was! She endedthe month with seven NationalAge Group (NAG) records toher credit—in both long courseand short course.

Elizabeth normally swims insoutheastern Massachusettsfor the Magnus Aquatic Group. But the first weekend of Julyfound her deep in the heart ofTexas—Austin, to be precise—at the Texas Open at theUniversity of Texas. There shebettered the NAG mark in the400 meter freestyle with a4:42.40.

The next assault took place atthe Greenwood SummerSplash, July 18. Elizabeth, though only 10, competed inthe women’s 12-and-under500 yard free (5:20.03) andsenior 100 back (1:01.69) and200 IM (2:15.51), establishingNAG marks for 10-and-undergirls in those events.

Swimming at the NewEngland 12-and-underChampionships at HarvardUniversity in Cambridge,Mass., Elizabeth set two moreNAG marks in the 100 meterback on July 25 (1:09.96) andthe 200 free two days later(2:16.37).

Elizabeth set the final stan-dard of her streak in the pre-

lims of the 200 meter IM(2:31.26) during the first day ofcompetition at the NewEngland Championships. Themeet, held in Providence, R.I.,featured senior swimmers, most of whom were severalyears older than her. Elizabethplaced 15th overall in theevent.

Elizabeth’s coach, CarlCederquist, is very enthusiasticabout his swimmer. “The thingthat I love about Elizabeth isthat she always brings anupbeat attitude to practice. Sheand her best friend on the teamare always telling me wackystories or singing me wackysongs. She really brings anenthusiastic and fun competi-tiveness to the pool for everypractice. Each set is like a newchallenge for her to meet andexceed. I believe that our teamattitude and being able to prac-tice with her own peers, ratherthan older swimmers, is allow-ing her to blossom.”

Hang Time: Surfing, playingthe violin

Training: She basically prac-tices four to six times a week, depending upon what else isgoing on in her life. (She is alsoan accomplished violin player.)Each practice averages around5,500-6,000 yards and alwaysincludes some type of drill set.

The fall season can be hectic.Whether you are a freshman or asenior in high school, you are probablyalready aware of the enormous timecommitment collegiate recruitingentails. But if you’re prepared, therecruiting experience can be moremanageable.

Preparation comes in many forms. However, the most important form ofpreparation is knowing what collegiatecoaches look for in recruits. The fol-lowing is a list of traits that most NCAAswimming coaches find desirable.

SuccessObviously, coaches pay close atten-

tion to a swimmer’s past results.Certain coaches only recruit swimmersat the senior national level, while otherprograms seek swimmers of variedsuccess. Past results are indicative of arecruit’s talent and ability to competeand contribute in the NCAA atmos-phere. In studying meet results, eachcoach attempts to fill the needs of hisor her team, looking to fill team weak-nesses first.

PotentialMany coaches are attracted more by

a swimmer’s potential than his or herachievements. In addition to looking ata recruit’s best times, coaches alsotrack yearly progress in an attempt toassess a swimmer’s development andpotential. Potential, of course, extendsfar beyond the pool. Athletes can high-light potential by explaining new dry-land routines, training regimens, dietary focuses, etc.

VersatilitySwimmers who are capable of com-

peting and contributing in severalevents and strokes can be more attrac-tive than a one- or two-event specialist.

Versatility is highly rewarded in theNCAA dual meet format, in which ath-letes are allowed to swim severalevents and relays. It tends to be evenmore highly prized by smaller teamsthat struggle to fill lanes during dualmeets. Larger teams are likely to bemore selective, recruiting stroke spe-cialists with greater ease. Understand-ing the needs of particular teams willallow you to market yourself moreeffectively.

LeadershipCoaches seek talented swimmers

and leaders. Leaders are not necessari-ly the fastest swimmers. However, theyare important ingredients in a team’ssuccess. Team captains, for instance, are highly regarded for their leader-ship, dedication and ability to moti-vate. A leader improves his or her teamthrough hard work, team focus and acontagious desire to improve person-ally and collectively.

Work Ethic/DedicationSimilarly, coaches desire swimmers

with strong, consistent work ethics. Adedicated swimmer is not only boundto improve and contribute, but he orshe will motivate others to train andcompete with greater intensity. Dedi-cation and hard work are necessaryingredients for swimming success.

AcademicsCoaches seek recruits who are moti-

vated both in the classroom as well asin the pool. Recruits must meet theacademic requirements of a particularcollege or university. Furthermore, acoach wants to be sure that eachrecruit will remain academically eligi-ble throughout his or her collegiatecareer. Swimming is just a subset ofthe collegiate experience—indeed, youmay spend as much time studying asyou will training—perhaps even more! That’s why coaches desire recruits whocan succeed both in and out of thepool and are excited by their successboth in their studies and their sport.

Personality andEnthusiasm

Coaches will always be attracted tooutgoing, personable recruits preciselybecause their teams will welcomethose individuals. A teammate whocarries a smile to practice and a conta-gious aura of enthusiasm is an enjoy-able and effective peer. During recruit-ing trips or phone conversations, re-member always to convey your enthu-siasm and to smile! Recruiters look formore than just statistics!

2003The Year in Review2003 was a happening year throughout the swimming world, with superb performances at every level of competition.

By Phillip Whitten

The year before the Olympic Gamesis always an exciting one, and 2003was no exception. The 10th FINAWorld Swimming Championships, held in July in Barcelona, offered theperfect opportunity for swimming toshowcase its greatest talents one yearbefore the Athens Games. A record2,017 competitors, representing 157nations, took part in the festivities, with the meet telecast in 155 countriesand watched by over 800 million view-ers.

The USA (28 medals, 11 gold) andAustralia (22 medals, 6 gold) dominat-ed proceedings in the pool, but swim-mers from 11 other nations stood atopthe victory podium, while athletesrepresenting another 11 nations tookhome silver or bronze medals. Worldrecords were broken 14 times in nofewer than 11 events, whileChampionship records were betteredan amazing 38 times.

Marvelous MichaelYet these Championships belonged

to Michael Phelps. Transformed bythe media from “teen phenom” to“Marvelous Michael” to “Superman”in less than a week, the 18-year-oldPhelps wreaked havoc on the recordbook, breaking world records fivetimes and winning five medals—threegold and two silver.

He set world records in the 200meter fly (1:53.93) and lowered the200 IM standard twice, taking it to1:56.04. (A week later, at the U.S.Nationals, he lowered that mark stillfurther to 1:55.94. No other man hasever swum under 1:58!)

In the semis of the 100 fly, he flew toan incredible WR of 51.47. He de-stroyed that time with a 51.10 in thefinals, but was upset by teammate Ian

Crocker. Crocker, whose previousbest was 52.21, totally bypassed the51s to touch in an astonishing 50.98.

Phelps also led off the USA’s 800free relay in an American record1:46.60, a time he bettered a week laterat nationals. Then, in his 13th swim ofthe weeklong meet, he smashed hisown WR in the 400 IM with a 4:09.09.

At year’s end, Phelps was Swim-ming World’s unanimous choice formale World Swimmer of the Year.

Record SwimsAt Worlds, five other men won two

individual events, with four of themcontributing to a gold medal relay aswell. Of these, Japan’s Pocket Rocket,Kosuke Kitajima, was the most prolif-ic. He came storming from behind to

set world records in both the 100(59.78) and 200 breast (2:09.42).

The Czar, Russia’s Alex Popov, became one of only a handful ofswimmers ever to win the same eventthree times at a World Championship.Popov, 31, whose last major triumphscame at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, took the 50 free (Championshiprecord 21.92), upset Holland’s Pietervan den Hoogenband to win the 100(48.42) and anchored Russia to anupset win over the USA in the 400 freerelay (CR 3:14.06).

Australian national icon Ian Thorpemanaged to defeat his toughest rivalsin his signature events. The Thorpedolaunched himself to victory in the 200free in 1:45.14, manhandling Olympicchampion van den Hoogenband; andhe put away teammate Grant Hackettwith deceptive ease with his 3:42.58 inthe 400.

For his part, Hackett became thefirst man to win the 1500 meters threestraight times, clocking 14:43.14, thefifth fastest time in history (he ownsthe four that were faster). The classyQueenslander also breezed to victoryin the 800 (7:43.82) and led offAustralia’s winning 800 relay.

Dorsal kingpin Aaron Peirsol sweptthe 100 and 200 meter back, clocking aCR 53.61 in the 100—only 1-hun-dredth of a second outside LennyKrayzelburg’s world record—and1:55.92 in the 200, a time only he hasbettered.

Two other world records were set inthe men’s sprints by German ThomasRupprath in the 50 back (24.80) andAussie Matt Welsh in the 50 fly (23.43).

The USA 400 medley relay team ofPeirsol, Brendan Hansen, Crocker andJason Lezak clocked 3:31.54, slashingthe world record by two seconds.

18 SWIMMING WORLD AND JUNIOR SWIMMER JANUARY 2004

There will be plenty of magic in theair this summer in Long Beach, Calif.,as the very best competitive swim-mers in the country will vie for theright to represent the United States atthe 2004 Olympic Games in Athens,Greece.

Long Beach has already hosted theOlympic Swimming Trials in 1968 and1976 at its Belmont Shores complex. The swimming world, however, hasseen some stunning evolution sincethen—particularly in pool technology.

In fact, it’s arguable that the mostmagical aspect of the upcoming July7-14 Trials may not even occurbetween the lanelines at all, becausethe entire competition will be stagedin an above-ground facility temporari-ly erected 100 yards from the PacificOcean.

The Long Beach Swim Center, as itwill be dubbed during its brief exis-tence, will include two 50-meter poolsand enough seating to accommodate10,000 spectators. The Center will beconstructed in roughly three weeks,be operational for less than twomonths, and then be completely dis-mantled.

Some flower blooms have longer lifespans.

A Winning ProposalBefore deciding who would host the

2004 Trials, USA Swimming evaluatedimpressive site proposals from severalcities. San Antonio offered its famousAlamo Dome for consideration. AndIndianapolis, whose dynamic IUPUINatatorium has seen several of themost recent editions of the Trials, again expressed an interest in hostingthe event.

Throughout the selection process, one thing was clear: Trials organizerswere looking for a way to help elevate

the prestige of a sport which is under-appreciated three out of every fouryears.

The Long Beach bid—spearhead-ed by former world record holderand U.S. national swimming cham-pion Kurt Krumpholz, and RichFoster, president of USA Water Poloand the Long Beach SportsCouncil—was radical, edgy andunprecedented.

The Long Beach group had previ-ously submitted bids to FINA to bringeither the 2003 or 2005 WorldChampion-ships to the area. But afterbeing passed over for both events, they turned their attention to acquir-ing the Trials.

“A lot of the work was alreadydone,” Krumpholz explains, describ-ing how the original concept called forerecting a pool inside the Long BeachArena. “We just took our plans andtweaked them a little bit.”

When USA Swimming suggestedthat a test competition should be con-ducted at the chosen site in the weeksleading up to the Trials, San Antoniopulled out, citing scheduling conflicts. And when it was also decided that anopen air venue would, perhaps, bettersimulate the outdoor conditions ourathletes would face in Athens,Indianapolis fell out of the running aswell.

Krumpholz and his team, though, immediately volunteered to build anoutdoor facility from scratch.

They extolled the virtues of return-ing the competition to Long Beach, atourist-friendly mecca that not onlyboasts an assortment of conveniently-located hotels and restaurants, but isalso more than experienced at pullingoff world-class conventions and sport-ing events. The annual Toyota GrandPrix, for instance—during which

supercharged racing cars screechthrough the streets in front of some150,000 adoring fans—has become averitable institution.

What was, perhaps, the most allur-ing feature about the Long Beach pro-posal was that the facility could bebuilt to hold more than double thenumber of spectators who normallyattend the Trials.

Constructing the pool and stagingthe event, though, would not becheap—the overall budget wouldcome in at approximately $3.5 million.

Yes, the disassembled pools couldbe sold off at the end of the day forpermanent installation elsewhere. And, yes, build-to-order pools havebeen adopted with varying degrees ofsuccess at previous competitions suchas the World Championships inFukuoka and Barcelona. But buildingan expensive temporary swim facilitywas still a risky proposition.

However, USA Swimming, deter-mined to take the sport to the nextlevel, was prepared to take theplunge—and in 2001 it gave LongBeach the green light.

Something From NothingMyrtha Pools, whose parent com-

pany in Italy is manufacturing the twopools’ basic structural components, will work in conjunction with theAquatic Design Group of Carlsbad,Calif., to help bring the project to life.

ADG has had a hand in designingand assembling a wide variety ofwater-based projects, including thecanals surrounding the VenetianCasino and Resort in Las Vegas. Buteven Randy Mendioroz, one of thecompany’s principals, admits that thelogistics of the Long Beach SwimCenter—and, specifically, the timeconstraints involved—are unlike any

he has ever tackled.“This is just a unique deal,” says

Mendioroz. “It’s a lot of work andcoordination. There’ll probably befour crews per pool all going at thesame time.”

Among those working long hours tomake this complex a reality come theMay 4th kickoff date will be concretefoundation crews, an Italian groupfrom Myrtha, water piping experts, electrical crews and a constructionteam whose job it will be to assembleall the seating.

“It’s like a big Erector Set,” describesMendioroz, whose task list will alsoentail removing—and later restor-ing—a pair of formidable concrete-based parking lot lights.

The entire facility will measure thesize of a football field. The pool’s decklevel will be elevated eight feet aboveground, and the finished bleacherswill rise another 70 to 80 feet.

“This is a huge footprint,” saysKrumpholtz. “But from a spectator’sstandpoint, I think this is absolutelygoing to help change the face of howthese things will go.”

Needless to say, attention to thesmallest of details will be critical to thesuccess of the massive undertaking.

“While we’re erecting the pools, we

use a laser to confirm that we have theperfect dimensions,” says Mendioroz.“This system is about as precise as youcan get.”

Cutting-Edge TechnologyThere are precious few spots avail-

able for the U.S. Olympic team. The1996 squad consisted of 44 swimmers;in 2000, the number was 45.

To date, roughly 650 athletes havereached the difficult qualifying stan-dards and earned the right to travel toLong Beach to compete for thosecherished spots.

The competition pool, where thebattles are to be waged, will be high-lighted by an array of state-of-the-artfeatures—PVC-coated stainless steelwalls, heat-welded bottom lines andtargets, a universal depth of twometers (6 feet, 7 inches) and deck-level gutters with at least a dozen pick-up points.

“That’s the key issue,” says Men-dioroz of the pick-up points, whichare where the water flowing into thegutter is swallowed back into the sys-tem to prevent wave action. “Whereasmost 50-meter pools might have sixpick-up points, we’re going to have atleast 12. Everything that’s being gen-erated by those swimmers is going to

be absorbed.”In other words, the venue is being

designed for blistering performances.Mendioroz quickly dismisses the

suggestion that an outdoor venueadjacent to the ocean might possiblyinterject performance-diminishingbreezes into the equation.

“There’ll be a wind shadowimposed by all the spectators,” heinsists. “It’ll be just like being inside anarena.”

Other novel features of the complexwill include a huge athlete servicescompound, conveniently-locatedready rooms and an 11-lane warm-uppool located a mere 50 feet away fromthe main pool. Additionally, three ofthe warm-up pool’s lanes will onlyextend 25 meters to afford the swim-mers the option of doing strictly shortcourse work.

It’s expected that 1,200 volunteerswill be recruited to help ensure thateverything runs seamlessly andaccording to plan.

“We want to make this the mostathlete-friendly meet these swimmershave ever experienced,” says Krump-holz. “We’re going the extra mile tomake sure that everything is done forthe athletes so that they can performtheir best.”

However, the Long Beach SwimCenter will play host to much morethan just competitive swimming.

The Grand Prix line-up alsoincludes the 2004 FINA Women’sWorld League Super Final, from June23-27, in which the top eight nationalwater polo teams in the world will mixit up in a pre-Olympics tournament. The FINA Men’s World League SuperFinal, comprised of the top six nation-al teams on the men’s side, will beheld from July 23-27.

Throw in a top-flight synchronizedswimming event and the national agegroup men’s water polo champi-onships—which are both in theprocess of being squeezed onto theslate—and it all adds up to a four-week summer of dreams for aquaticsport enthusiasts.

“If you’re building the pool,” chuck-les an understandably harriedHedlund, “you want to do as much asyou can.”

Long Beach, of course, couldn’t behappier with all the buzz surroundingthe Grand Prix and Trials.

“People here are ecstatic,” saysHedlund. “The Convention andVisitors Bureau has taken this on as amajor effort because they know

there’s going to be a tremendous eco-nomic impact and a lot of visibility forthe city.”

“Mayor (Beverly) O’Neil has beenbehind our swimming efforts 110 per-cent,” says Krumpholz. “She wasthrilled when we got this, and she’splaying a major part in helping us sup-port all this.”

The AmbianceThe decision to create an outdoor

venue from the ground-up literallypopped the lid off seating restrictionsand configurations.

In fact, for the first time in history, the sport of competitive swimmingwill be merged with the concept ofhigh-priced luxury suites.

Forty-four club boxes, with enoughroom to seat a dozen fans each, willrim the periphery of the pool at almostdeck level. Twelve additional largerluxury suites, located above andbehind the starting blocks, will eachaccommodate up to 30 spectators.Guests in each will be served lavishlycatered meals and a selection of finewines.

“The luxury and club boxes will bevery nice,” says Hedlund.

The remainder of the seating hasbeen divided into three sections—gold, silver and bronze—with buyerswho purchase multiple-day entriesgiven proximity preference.

“Barcelona’s pool deck was a lotwider than ours,” points out Krump-holz. “Our first seats will be muchcloser to the action.”

And lest anyone begin towonder whether competitiveswimming can justify suchwhite glove treatment, virtu-ally all the boxes and suiteswere spoken for by earlyNovember, and the mostprized seats in the bleachersections are long gone as well.

“We’ve sold almost all thegold seats with really noadvertising at all,” saysHedlund.

NBC, which will be televis-ing the Trials, has alreadyreviewed the plans for the

facility. They, too, have lavished praiseupon the project—and for good rea-son, as it might just be impossible todraw up a more visually dramaticbackdrop than the famous PacificOcean and an array of colorful sail-boats. Even the Queen Mary OceanLiner is located nearby.

A Point of No Return?Just as it takes an inspired and dedi-

cated team of individuals to help cre-ate a U.S. Olympic swimmer, it takes asimilarly talented group of people tocreate the modern championshipswim meet venue.

As our top swimmers slip into thepool in Long Beach this summer inpursuit of their Olympic dreams, theycan express gratitude to an indom-itable force of visionaries, architects, engineers, contractors, plumbers andequipment suppliers for helping givethem the opportunity to compete attheir very best.

It remains to be seen whether themagical wizardry behind the 2004Trials will forever change the mannerin which this, the most prestigiousswimming competition in the coun-try, will be staged.

If all goes well, though, the biggestvenue in Trials history will producesome explosive performances, andUSA Swimming’s fervent determina-tion to propel the sport to the next levelwill result in a resounding success.

The breaststroke is the most techni-cal of all the strokes, requiring perfecttiming to create speed. Here, in the firstof a three-part Tech Tip series, KevinClements demonstrates the breast-stroke arm technique. Kevin ranksthird in the world in the 200 meterindividual medley (1:59.56) and is aworld-class breaststroker. In nextmonth’s Tech Tip, Kevin will demon-strate the breaststroke kicking tech-nique. The Tech Tip in March willfocus on the timing of the arms andlegs to generate maximum speed.

Beginning in the stretch phase(Photo #1), the arms are fully extendedwith legs straight and toes pointed. The eyes are looking straight down atthe bottom of the pool, the hips closeto the surface.

The pull (Photo #2) begins with thehands sweeping outward. During theoutsweep, the palms are pitched out-ward, with the thumbs down. Thereshould be a straight line starting fromthe elbow, down the forearms, and tothe middle finger beginning with theoutsweep and maintained throughthe insweep. The arms acceleratesteadily as they move outward, back-ward, down, then in.

The insweep (Photo #3) is thepower phase of the pull. The fingerspoint down toward the bottom of thepool. The elbows stay high in thewater, with the hands and forearmsrotating around them. Once thehands pass under the elbows, thepitch of the hands is rotated inward(fingertips facing each other).

There are two parts of the insweepfrom which you gain propulsion: thedownward phase (Photo #4) and theinward phase (Photo #5). The water ispushed backward during these twophases due to the pitch of the handsand forearms driving the water back-ward.

As the arms recover, shrug theshoulders and drive them forward, pushing the elbows forward, keepingthem close together out in front of thechin.

While your arms are recoveringback into a streamline (Photo #6), tryto keep your elbows as close togetheras possible. This will decrease theamount of resistance you will getfrom the recovery.

After winning two gold medals—both in world record time—at theBarcelona World Championshipslast summer, Japan’s Kosuke Kita-jima became the favorite to repeatthis summer at the Olympic Gamesin Athens.

He also became an instant celebrityin his homeland, recognized whereverhe goes. Should he win gold in Athens,he would become the first Japaneseman to do so since Daichi Suzuki in1988. Should he win two, he wouldbecome the first Japanese swimmerever to perform the feat.

For his part, when asked aboutOlympic gold, the Pocket Rocket—theskinny Kitajima is only 5-9 1/2 and 156pounds—says firmly: “All this is specu-lation. First I have to be selected as amember of the Olympic team.”

His chances look good. Aside fromwinning three medals in Barcelona,Kitajima was selected by SwimmingWorld as Pacific Rim Swimmer of theYear. He also finished second in theballoting for World Swimmer of theYear.

Recently, we sat down to talk withKosuke. Here’s what he had to say:

SW: Please take a few moments toreflect on your Barcelona experi-ence—your taper, nutrition, sleepingand, of course, your races.

Kitajima: We trained at altitude inSpain for about 30 days beforeWorlds, and we didn’t have anyJapanese meals available. So I broughtmy own Japanese rice, boiled it andate it myself. We have a lot of experi-ence with altitude training, both in theU.S. and Europe, and I knew I had tokeep my weight at 71 kg (156 pounds). You get stressed when you cannot eatwhat you want to eat, and I knew thatwithout the extra Japanese food, Iwould lose weight rapidly and getweaker.

SW: And what happened?Kitajima: I kept my weight at 71 kg,

so I must have had enough to eat. Also, for the first time, we had a nutri-tionist, who cooked rice balls, and thathelped a lot, too. By the way, I wassleeping very well.

SW: What about your mental state?Kitajima: Mentally, I felt I had extra

energy in my body compared to the

Sydney Games or World Champion-ships in 2001. I could see how every-thing was coming together, and Icould barely wait for my races.

SW: And your training?Kitajima: As the World Champion-

ships got closer, my training keptimproving. By the time we got toGirona, I thought, “Probably, I can goquite fast.” I was very confident. I wasrelaxed in my heat of the 100 meterbreast, and my time improved fromthe semifinal to the final.

SW: So, you finally broke that inter-nal barrier? (Until the World Champs,Kitajima consistently swam faster insemis than the final.)

Kitajima: Yes. This was somethingthat had plagued me since 2000. Thistime, I still had plenty of energy evenafter the final of the 100, so my confi-dence level rose even higher.

SW: After your world record in the100, the crowd gave you a big ovationbefore and during the 200 breast.

Kitajima: It seemed so. In truth, Iwas so focused, I barely noticed.Actually, in the 200, I was a bit stiff inthe semifinal, and I did not want to

“The Olympics are a bit different in terms of the winning time. You go for the win rather than thetime. But my priority is to improve myself further.”

swim that way again. I swam faster inthe final, but still felt that stiffness.

SW: Were you aiming for a worldrecord in the semifinal of the 200?

Kitajima: I think I can say that I wasnot shooting for it. Just let it be, youknow. But I remember that I saved myenergy for the final.

SW: You say you were a bit stiff butstill swam a world record?

Kitajima: Yeah. There was a bit ofa gap between my goal time andwhat I swam. I thought I wouldhave to go under 2:09 because Ithought everyone would be muchfaster in the final.

SW: Do you think it will be muchfaster in the Olympics?

Kitajima: The Olympics are a bitdifferent in terms of the winning time. You go for the win rather than thetime. But everyone understands thatyou have to be prepared to swimfaster to win in Athens. So, my priorityis to improve myself further.

SW: How do you cope when youdon’t meet your own expectations?

Kitajima: Regardless of whether it’sin competition or training, when I amin bad condition, I feel a mental bur-den. Sometimes I think too muchwhen the situation is like that. I brood. When things are going well, everyonearound me is positive, and I feed onthat mental energy. Right now, all Iam focusing on is Athens.

SW: What do you need to do to wintwo gold medals in Athens?

Kitajima: I must be faster. To dothat, I will have only two opportuni-ties: the Japanese Trials and theOlympics. My focus will be solely onthose two meets.

SW: What is your race strategy forAthens?

Kitajima: It is so easy to say, “I’ll goout in 28.0 and come back in 31.0.That’s a 59-flat.” It’s OK to set a goallike that, but it may not be good todecide now. I will place a tremendousimportance in my feel for the water atthe Games. It’s what I did inBarcelona—I did not decide how torace in the final until I saw how I felt inprelims and semis.

SW: Have you thought about thetactics you may use against yourrivals?

Kitajima: I believe the breaststrokebrings out each competitor’s person-ality—whether he decides to go outunder 28 seconds or hangs back. Inthe last two or three years, I’ve learnedto read my rivals pretty well—to knowwho is on target and who doesn’t havethe guts to come home hard.

SW: You appear on TV commercialsnow and have a huge influence on agegroup swimmers.

Kitajima: When I was a kid, I reallydid not know about swimmers whowon gold medals at World Champs. Ithought getting a gold medal in theOlympics is the best thing in theworld. My goal has always been to win

Olympic gold. If I do, the kids willremember me. The commercials aregreat, but gold in Athens is my No. 1priority. When I get on the blocks inAthens, I will be in the best conditionof my life: physically and mentally.
