PHCY 433 (PHCY 74): Drug Literature Analysis and Interpretation (4 credit hours) Module III: Evidence-based Health Care and Critical Appraisal. Students in the second professional year learn the tools of evidence-based therapeutics and critical appraisal of the literature and their relevance to life-long learning. Topics include causal inference, study design,


introduction to evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal of conduct of randomized clinical trials; cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies; bias in clinical research; and pharmacy practice research.

PHTH 81: Pharmacy Practice of Geriatric Patients Introduces students to important principles of drug therapy management in the older adult, and provides opportunities to apply and practice these principles.

DPOP 804 (PPES 254): Informatics: Use of Large Health Care Databases (5 credit hours) and weekly 3-hour analysis laboratory session. This is an interdisciplinary course providing practical training in the analysis of large secondary databases containing physician, hospital, and prescription data. Course topics include preparation, algorithm development, quality control, and dataset limitations. The course provides graduate students and professional students planning a career in health services research and/or pharmacoepidemiology an introduction to secondary data analysis. The course explores the challenges and opportunities of working with large health datasets, including databases created for administrative and clinical purposes. In addition, the course will help prepare students for careers in research and program evaluation.

Emphasis: Pharmaceutically-Relevant Health Policies and Outcomes The graduate seminar is intended as an opportunity for graduate students to discuss topical issues not otherwise covered in core classes.
