Ibiza is renowned throughout the world for the sensation of

freedom that it inspires amongst its visitors, who experience

a different way of spending their time, in contact with nature

and the monuments and history of the island.

The sunsets in Ibiza are the most spectacular in the

Mediterranean. In many parts of the island, gathering to watch this

magical moment becomes a ritual accompanied by music and good

company. The Ses Variades coast, and the Platges de Compte, Es

Vedrá, and Benirrás, together with many other places on the island,

bear witness to this peculiar communion between man and nature.

This intimate contact must also have been felt years ago by the

various civilisations that have left their mark upon this island, which

still shows traces of its past and interesting archaeological remains.

The Phoenicians were followed by the Carthaginians, who gave

way to the Romans…. The unbeatable situation of the island,

enabling full control of the Mediterranean maritime routes, led

it to be continually invaded by the Vandals, the Byzantines and

the Arabs. Indeed it was the latter, whose agricultural system was

the most widely used for centuries, as well as lending their style

of architecture to many of the typical Ibizan buildings. Ibiza is a

paradise for sports enthusiasts. Its warm, Mediterranean climate

makes it the ideal place for practising all your favourite sports at

any time of year and with a wide range of possibilities, whether you

prefer water sports, such as waterskiing, sailing, or diving, sports

related to nature, such as rambling or cycling, or any other kind of

sport such as golf, tennis or horse-riding.

A variety of festivals, local fiestas and other cultural events are

held in Ibiza throughout the year. Its traditional festivals comprise

a unique range of celebrations, giving an insight into the island’s

culture. There are also many different flea markets, boot sales and

weekly markets, offering visitors the best and most typical local

products. Most of the village fiestas hold demonstrations of local

handicrafts, such as basket weaving and the making of shoes and

musical instruments, all featuring the lively and colourful Ibizan

folklore.

All these ingredients combine to create an ambience which has

been largely preserved, as tourism has hardly altered the lifestyle

and agricultural labours of the interior of the island, where the

farmers carefully tend their fields and maintain the customs of

their ancestors. Here small flocks of sheep and goats graze in the

lush, green fields of the rural areas of the north of the island in

winter, which contrast with the white blossom of the almond trees.

Ses Salines, declared a Nature Reserve in 1995 and a Nature Park

in 2001, are proof of the island’s great natural resources. Here,

local flora and fauna live together in harmony in a rich ecosystem,

where salt is the predominant feature, making the surrounding

landscape and beaches unique.

The Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell Nature Reserves and the Illots

de Ponent islands (Cala d’Hort Park) are another example of the

variety of nature that has been preserved on the island. Apart from

their beautiful landscapes, these places are home to birdlife and

have been declared as Specially Protected Area for Birds by the

EU. The natural wealth of the land is complemented by that of

the sea surrounding it, which provides the ideal setting for diving

enthusiasts.

Ibiza’s Congress Centre is situated a few metres from the town

centre of Santa Eulària des Riu, which lies just a few kilometres

from the island’s port and airport. This modern building positions

the island amongst the leaders in Spanish congressional tourism.

The privileged situation of the Congress Centre and its adaptation

to the climate and traditional architecture of the island, has made

it a clear example of Ibiza’s vocation for opening new roads into

the future and position the island within the MICE sector with a

multipurpose area, ideal for all kinds of events.

We can also find museums and unique establishments well worth

mentioning, amongst which are the Museum of Contemporary Art

of Ibiza, which is situated within the walled area of the city and the

Punic Necropolis of Puig des Molins, which was declared as World

Heritage by UNESCO, being the largest and best preserved of the

Phoenician-Punic culture. The Fortified City of Dalt Vila, has many

attractions for visitors, such as its numerous bars, restaurants,

shops and art galleries. The Phoenician archaeological site of Sa

Caleta has also been declared as World Heritage by UNESCO and

is also well worth visiting.

All this and much more we cannot forget the island’s nightlife,

which attracts artistes and personalities from all over the world

makes Ibiza the ideal place to celebrate all kinds of business

events, incentives congresses, or conventions. The island’s hotels

are modern and sophisticated, with a quality of service comparable

with the best in Europe.

MICE Media. A company dedicated to the international pro-motion of destinations within the MICE segments.

Meetings tourism (congresses, workshops, incentive trips, conferences, seminars, forums, courses, etc.) comprises a segment that represents an adequate seasonal component for the Balearic Islands, due to their good infrastructures, installations, tourist offer and connections by air, as well as the high spending capacity of this kind of tourist for the Islands.Due to the peculiarities, demands and requirements of meetings tourists, the MICE product is considered by many to be the most attractive in the tourist sector. Nevertheless, the conventional sources of commercialisa-tion are different and belong to a very specialised sector.To be able to gain a position in this market and promote one’s product, it is necessary to infiltrate very carefully and this requires a definite, speciali-sed strategy. In order to successfully promote a destination in Europe, it is essential to determine exactly to whom we wish to direct our message. In MICE Media, we divide our potential clients into three main groups, which form part of our own database of more than 5000 companies:* Consortiums: These are groups such as American Express, Carlson Wagon Lits, Lufthansa Citycenter (LCC) and others, which have traditionally domi-nated contracting for large corporate events, congresses and conventions through their various delegates in the main European countries. Finding and contracting them is, in the first instance, easily accessible and transparent, as they are important organisations, but it is much more difficult to con-tact directly the persons responsible for contracting in the different areas.

* Implants: These are of exceptional strategic importance. Implants function as internal travel agencies within large corporations and companies and they decide the destinations for ALL corporate travel i.e. all the company’s or corporation’s meetings, incentives, congresses, etc and it requires continual work on a long-term basis to find them, get to know them and establish a professional and personal relationship with the key contacts.* Independent Organisers: In contrast to traditional tour operators, there are many cases in the MICE segment where small and medium event orga-nising companies have clients who are very important on an international level. Brands such as Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Bayer, Pfitzer, Sony Ericsson or Vodafone are examples of how some companies entrust the organisation and contracting of their business trips to small, specialist orga-nisations, which offer a very personalised service, tailor-made to the specific requirements of their VIP clients.* International Golf Tour operators, a segment closely related to MICE, as prac-tising this sport represents the perfect complement to any corporate event.

To gain access to all of these in the most effective way, MICE Media has de-veloped a promotion strategy, which currently includes the following actions that have already been put into practice in Majorca and Ibiza.“MICE IBIZA ANNUAL GUIDE”.

An annual guide, the aim of which is to promote meetings tourism on a worldwide scale, providing information on Majorca, its municipalities and its specialist tourist companies: hotels, restaurants, specialist incoming agen-cies (DMCs), meeting centres, professional congress organisers (OPCs),

audiovisual and hostess companies, caterers, etc., all of whom have the necessary experience, professionalism and quality to guarantee the organi-sation of an excellent and unforgettable event.

The guide is available in printed and digital V-Card formats to be distributed in trade fairs and other events, as well as online in the web portal.

WWW.MICEIBIZA.COMThe www.miceibiza.com portal has been designed as a tool for advanced consultation. It includes more information than the printed guide and is available in two languages: Spanish and English.It provides all meeting planners with updated information on news of the destinations through periodical newsletters, thereby generating continual informative hits.Furthermore, the portal provides more detailed information concerning MICE MEDIA clients and generates interactivity between supply and de-mand, establishing connections with the web sites of all the companies which advertise in it.

Map Search: a geographical search vehicle of Majorca, area by area where, when clicking on each area, all the associated establishments appear, to-gether with a full introductory description of the area, its natural resources, culture, fiestas, traditions and relevant telephone numbers.There are different sections on the Island’s resources such as culture, his-tory, gastronomy, active tourism, shopping, etc. all of which enhance the offer as a whole, giving a much more detailed view of the destination.Access to interesting links. MICE MEDIA WORKSHOPSFor the past three years, MICE Media has held one2one Workshops, provi-ding the ideal setting for getting to know companies from different countries, who bring, or are planning to bring groups to Majorca and Ibiza.

This event aims to set up personalised meetings lasting 15 minutes, bet-ween specialist MICE buyers, who have been invited from various European countries, and vendors of installations and establishments in Majorca who are our clients, in order to establish direct lines of collaboration and con-tracting. In order to do so, MICE MEDIA has personally chosen and invited various

MICE Media offers its outsourcing services to Convention Bureaus and other institutions responsible for tourist destinations, who need to outsour-ce the promotion of the same in the MICE segment, designing and im-planting an action plan which will promote the destination in a favourable way against the competition, always in accordance with their budget and requirements. This action plan will include the organisation of famtrips, press trips, workshops and the design and distribution of guides and web portals, as well as representation of the destinations in the sector’s main international trade fairs.

INTERNATONAL TRADE FAIRS AND ROADSHOWSMICE Media clients are represented with our own stand in three top trade fairs, two of which are in the MICE segment EIBTM Barcelona, and IMEX Frankfurt. Personalised contacts and meetings are established in these trade fairs at a rate of more than 40 companies per trade fair, all of which are interested in the destination. A database and list of petitions are sent to our clients in a report which contains the preferences of the companies contacted and contact details of the same.The same procedure is applied for Roadshows in European capital cities, where appointments are made to visit more than 20 MICE agencies in order to personally present our destinations to them. In the same way as with the trade fairs, our clients receive a report on the companies contacted, together with their requirements.

Ibiza is still largely unknown when it comes to tourism for conferen-ces, incentives or any kind of meetings, although our image is asso-ciated with many other kinds of tourist product. In fact, Ibiza is very popular as a beach & music destination, many sport events take place in the island during the whole year, the old town has been declared Word Heritage…

In the past five years important investments have been made,

public and private, to promote this type of tourism. The first

phase of the Ibiza Congress Centre (auditorium for more than 400

persons) has been completed, and to date new five-star hotels

have bee opened, while others have carried out refurbishments to

allow them to host business gatherings.

It is also mentioning too the numerous places, with buildings or

open-air venues, which are ideal to hold events.

Ibiza, offers a variety of scenarios for any incentive. From

unspoiled beaches to inland landscapes with almond and olive

trees, from cycle routes in pinewoods to kayak excursions in

the Mediterranean, from a fortified city to a small village with a

whitewashed church, …

MICE is a product which is essential for maintaining high occupancies throughout the year. What is the Pacha group doing for this segment?

The insufficient cultural, leisure and sporting resources make it difficult to carry out any plans to improve the situation during the rest of the year.

“ I think that the work that MICE Ibiza is carrying out to attract visitors to Ibiza is very positive, especially the efforts you are making to promote the island during the rest of the year. Any promotion and effort concerning tourism is always welcome.”

MICE PEOPLE I N T E R V I E W

The Pacha group has been working towards seasonal adjustment for years, keeping their establishments open during mid and low seasons. What results are they achieving?

Pacha Ibiza remains open during the winter purely to support Ibiza, as they do not obtain any financial benefit. For many years, the results have been negative and are getting progressively worse. During this period of the year, arrivals to the island are limited due to the severe lack of air and sea connections, which means that the opportunities for the island to be a tourist destination are practically inexistent.

Another important factor is the existence of many illegal bars and nightclubs which are working without a licence and which ignore the opening times established by law. For this reason, we have often been on the verge of closing during the winter.

What does Ibiza need to be able to prolong the tourist season?

Thousands of things, apart from being better connected with the rest of the world.

Many flights are suspended during the winter, leaving the island practically isolated. If this situation continues, there is very little that we can do to extend the season.

At the moment, the other discotheques are the ones which mark the beginning and end of the season but if the island had more cultural and sports

We need new ideas and proposals to promote all that the island can offer visitors during this period of the year. The Pacha group is doing all it can to offer an alternative to attract the public in the winter but at the moment it just isn’t enough.

Which are the nearest and most competitive markets for Ibiza within the tourist sector?

During times of crisis, people always settle for the most economic option. Tourists nowadays compare prices and spend more time thinking about their next holiday destination and they will certainly find more economical offers such as Asia or the Caribbean.

For the second year running, MICE Ibiza is organised a Workshop from the 25th to the 27th April 2012, which attended by around 20 international event organisers, who are interested in getting to know, or discovering Ibiza and its companies which specialise in MICE. How do you rate this kind of event?

I think that the work that MICE Ibiza is carrying out to attract visitors to Ibiza is very positive, especially the efforts they are making to promote the island during the rest of the year. Any promotion and effort concerning tourism is always welcome.

It is essential that we try to prevent Ibiza from deteriorating any further. The island deserves to be respected and we must realise once and for all that tourism is our living and it is our duty to look after it.
