REFERENCES AND GENERAL NOTES Numismatic Chronicle, Volume 173 (2013), Coin Hoards, pp. 391-413. This describes coins of “hoard B” and “hoard C”. The 12

th, 13

th and 14

th

coins described in hoard C were given incorrect numbers and the opportunity is taken to correct this mistake in the endnotes.

Various forms of six and eight-pointed stars occur. Although their treatment in DOC is not entirely satisfactory, D. O. references are given and, in view of the illustrations herein, together with the account in NC, no further detailed explanations seem necessary. The weight of the coin takes order precedence over the form of the star. 1.8. The form of the stars is uncharacteristic of the first officina. 1.9. The coin, from the Robert Bridge collection, is unusually well preserved. 1.16-17. The form of the stars is uncharacteristic of the third officina. 1.18-19; 1.21; 1.31: 1.35: all have a star on the Emperor’s shoulder. 1.20 and 1.22. The style of the obverse is unusual in both cases but the coins appear to be regular. 1.36-1.40. On a high proportion of coins from hoard C the officina letter is illegible - presumably as a result of some general problem with the method of striking. 1.39. There seems to be a pellet above the right star but it is difficult to be certain. 1.45. According to MIBE, a supplementary issue. Its date of issue must be uncertain. 1.46. Almost certainly struck in 517–18. A variant of MIBE 30 which has the denomination mark between a star and an outward-facing crescent each with pellets above and beneath. There seem to be traces of other pellets, perhaps there are two in each of the lower fields, and it is possible that this is a trial piece. 1.47. Struck on a small (15 mm) dumpy flan. 1.50. While clearly belonging to a group of coins catalogued in MIBE as 34 and 35 (and dated to 507-512), this coin seems to lack pellets as well as any officina letter. 1.53 and 1.57. The å is probably part of the mint signature for Nicomedia rather than an officina letter. On 1.53, the cross above the denominational mark M appears to be mounted on a globe. 1.61. The reverse appears blundered. The die cutter seems to have inverted the reverse inscription. Hence, the die-axis is meaningless.
