OUR CAPABILITIESAnalytics and Data ScienceThe Center for Analytics and Data Science (CADS) is a joint initiative of the Farmer School of Business, the College of Arts and Science, and the College of Engineering and Computing. CADS brings together experts from information systems and analytics, statistics, computer science and software engineering, marketing, and accounting in an innovative research environment. Part of the Department of Geography, the Geospatial Analysis Center offers geospatial data collection and analysis services, which are supported by more than 20 high-end computers running the most current GIS and remote sensing software. The Redhawk cluster supports a wide range of analytics and data science research. This general purpose research computing resource consists in part of two login nodes and 45 compute nodes. The compute nodes have Intel processors with core counts varying between eight and 16 and memory in the range of 12GB to 128GB. The cluster also supports shared storage space in the amount of about 18TB.

Applied Public Policy, Management Research, and Program EvaluationThe Scripps Gerontology Center, an Ohio Center of Excellence at Miami University, is one of the nation’s top centers for research in aging to facilitate informed decisions by policymakers and care providers. Scripps’ team of more than 40 staff, affiliated faculty, and research fellows have expertise in demography, long-term care, and the aging workforce. Miami’s Center for Public Management and Regional Affairs (CPMRA) offers research, technical assistance services, and training and education in the areas of public management and capacity building, local government economic development, and planning, primarily with non-metropolitan communities in Ohio. Researchers in the Geospatial Analysis Center have expertise in urban and regional planning and agricultural and natural resource management. In the Departement of Psychology, research on consumer and employee behavior supports better management decisions. Scripps and CPMRA also offer program evaluation services.

Virtual Reality and User Experience TestingThe Armstrong Institute for Interactive Media Studies (AIMS) at Miami University facilitates development of live action virtual reality (VR) or VR games and animations that can be used for research or training. Miami’s huge immersive virtual environment (HIVE) is a state-of-the-art virtual environment facility offering completely untethered tracking of multiple users in a physical space of 1,100 square meters. Immersed users of the HIVE are able to navigate naturally through virtual worlds by simply walking. Through the use of redirected walking algorithms, the HIVE can seamlessly sim-ulate virtual worlds of unlimited size. Additional assets include a three-walled/floor immersive VR environment, a Z-Space VR table offering manipulable “float in front of you” 3-D content, Samsung Gear and Occulus Rift VR headsets, a double telepresence robot, a Google Project Tango tablet, and 3-D and VR cameras. Industry-leading Tobii eye-trackers help facilitate user experience studies.

PsychophysiologyHoused in the Department of Psychology, Miami’s Center for Human Psychophysiology features a high-density, 256-channel electroencephalography (EEG) recording system with integrated Smart Eye tracking system from Electrical Geodesics. The Department of Psychology also houses additional eyetrackers used to measure attention and processing; a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system, a new, non-invasive device to measure brain activity; and biometric equipment to measure galvanic skin response, heart rate, and facial muscle activation, which are associated with emotional responses.

Health and WellnessMiami’s Psychology Clinic and our Speech & Hearing Clinic offer evaluation and personalized care for individuals in the local community. Rsearchers in the Department of Psychology are examining how technology can be used to improve health, while public health researchers in the Department of Kinesiology and Health study the social, cognitive, and emotional factors that influence health behaviors. A program of the Scripps Gerontology Center, Opening Minds through Art is an intergenerational art program for people with dementia. It is grounded in research that shows creative expression improves the physical and psychological well-being of those facing cognitive challenges. Faculty affiliates of the Myaamia Center are researching the effect of self-identity on the college success of members of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma enrolled at the Tribe’s namesake university.

Are you looking to tap into the brightest, most creative, and scholarly minds in Ohio? Miami University has them. Our nationally recognized research faculty challenge our students every day. As a result, our students develop skills that are broad and deep. More than 2,000 undergraduates work with their professors on funded research each year. Nearly 100% of Miami students participate in an internship, fieldwork, or other form of practiced learning before they graduate. Graduate students pursuing a PhD in psychology or gerontology or a Masters degree in one of six social science fields conduct meaningful research that leads to solutions for the most pressing societal issues of our time. Miami’s graduate program alumni are well prepared to assume leading roles in government, industry, and academia.

Whatever talent you need, Miami students fit the bill. We encourage you to learn more by contacting us today.

INTERNSHIPSIn 2014, Miami received nearly $750,000 from the Ohio Board of Regents’ Ohio Means Internships and Co-ops grant program. In addition to supporting 122 new Ohio internships, these funds have been used to hire internship coordinators, to develop programs designed to broaden access to current and potential internship employers, and to establish a Cincinnati Digital Innovation Center. All of this makes it easier and more beneficial than ever before to hire Miami student interns.

OUR NEWEST PARTNERSHIPMiami University and Mercy Health are collaborating on academic initiatives and research in health/wellness and management.
