Test Composer offers test engineers more control over the MGTS application than any other automation tool on the market. The commands offer actions that allow you to download the test, start the test and check the status of the test. The Data Collection commands provide visibility at different levels from the high-level pass/fail status of the different state machines to the low-level EMR and Traffic reports. Test Composer validation steps use these collected statistics to check the results for test pass or failure.

Constructing and debugging tests has never been easier. The tests developed in the MGTS interface are used as the starting point for the automation. This shortens development time for new tests and allows the user to experiment with different scenarios before making formal changes to the test.

Test Composer & MGTS work together to accelerate test development

Even if full regression test automation isn’t the ultimate goal, Test Composer can also accelerate the process of manual testing. By constructing test sequences that automate DUT configuration as well as MGTS configuration, manual test engineers can quickly move past test setup into active testing.

Once tests have been constructed in Test Composer, they are easily managed and scheduled using Test Conductor, Ixia’s end-to-end automation solution.=

Test Conductor is easy to use and highly scalable. Test Conductor helps test engineering teams create, organize and catalog their tests and regression suites, scheduling tests to run unattended or on-demand.

MGTS® Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)

The convergence of voice, data and video networks presents the telecom industry with many exciting challenges. In response to those challenges, telecommunications equipment manufacturers and service providers are competing fiercely to be the first to bring new products to market. To assure the quality, performance and interoperability of those products, Ixia offers the powerful Message Generator Traffic Simulator (MGTS). The MGTS® product line addresses diagnostic needs with easy-to-use, flexible and automated test solutions.

The MGTS product line spans wired and wireless technologies and is based on high-performance platforms, the MGTS p250, p400 and m500. High level applications provide sophisticated diagnostic capabilities for specific technologies: universal mobile telephone system (UMTS); SS7, including SS7 over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM); generated packet radio services (GPRS); and Internet protocol (IP).

The MGTS diagnostic system enables developers of third-generation (3G) network architectures to create custom testers for radio network controller (RNC), UMTS terrestrial radio access network (UTRAN), and core network elements. The MGTS can be used in all phases of development:

• As a functional test tool during the protocol development phase of signaling products during simulation

• As a load test tool during network modeling of serving nodes for protocol verification and operational acceptance

• As an intelligent, high-load diagnostic tool for network integrity and peak performance testing

MGTS UMTS The MGTS provides the protocols, simulators, interfaces, and applications required to build custom environments for the following systems under test:

• RNC – The MGTS UMTS simulates node Bs and core network (MSC and SGSN portions of UMTS) generating traffic over the lu or lub interfaces toward the RNC under test.

• Core Network (MSC and SGSN) – The MGTS UMTS simulates one or more UTRAN networks, generating traffic over an lu interface toward a core network (MSC or SGSN) under test.

• Gateway GPRSS Support Node (GGSN) – The MGTS UMTS simulates one or more SGSNs generating traffic over the Gn interface toward the GGSN under test.

Functions and Load Testing The UMTS test system can be used for functional testing or load testing. A functional test provides for the early assessment of whether a design works. Once basic function is confirmed, subsequent load testing can reveal how well the design intent is satisfied, under conditions that approximate or exceed anticipated use.

MGTS GPRS The MGTS GPRS diagnostic environment is a system for developers of second-generation networks to create custom testers for core network elements such as the base station subsystem (BSS) serving GPRS support node (SGSN), gateway GPRS support node (GGSN), and interfaces (Gb, Gn, Gi, Gr, Gs).

The GPRS MGTS functions during all phases of development:

• As a test tool during the protocol development phase of signaling products

• As a simulator of lower protocol layers

• As a load test tool during network modeling of serving nodes for protocol verification and operational acceptance

• As an intelligent, high-load diagnostic tool for network integrity and peak performance testing

Functions The MGTS provides the protocols, simulators, emulators, and applications needed to build the following custom test environments:

• BSS tester – The MGTS GPRS simulates the SGSN when testing the BSS

• SGSN tester – The MGTS GPRS simulates the BSS, mobile station (MS), mobile switching center (MSC), and home location register (HLR) when testing the SGSN

• GGSN tester – The MGTS GPRS simulates both the SGSN and packet data network (PDN) when testing the GGSN

STP Emulation Package The package simulates STPs, including high-speed link STPs, which may be an integral step in test bed setup. Users can configure flexible test beds, reducing the cost of deploying actual STPs in a lab environment.

SCP Simulation Package With the use of the protocol adaptable state machine (PASM™), the MGTS creates SS7 messag structures, contents and sequences, and signaling test cases against an SCP under test. The SCP may be advanced intelligent network (AIN), local number portability (LNP), interim standard 41 (IS41), or global system for mobile communications (GSM)/home locator register (HLR).

Network Performance Load Simulation Package (NPLT) The package generates and validates heavy traffic load across STPs under test to assess STP performance. The MGTS running NPLT can generate loads from one to 32 links, per simulated device.

NPLT Traffic Reports NPLT traffic reports indicate the number of message signal units (MSUs) transmitted and received. NPLT Traffic Reports includes delay analysis. The delay analysis report segments the cross-STP delay into “delay buckets,” providing distribution based on the MSU generated and received during a test run.

Protocol Adaptable State Machine (PASM™) The MGTS utilizes PASM to enable the user to construct custom test cases graphically in a non programmable environment. PASM is protocol-independent, supporting standard and proprietary protocols as well as variations from different countries.
