DISCOVERY

The internet enables users to acces informations located in databases all over the world

By browsing and searching data sources on the web,users can apply the internet's discovery capability to areas ranging from education to government services to entertainment to commerce.

Navigating through the web and gaining access to necessary informations are becoming more dfficult.So,to accomplish these tasks,people increasingly are using search engines,directories,and portals.

a) Search engine is a computer program that searchs for specific information by keyword and reports the results.

b) It maintain an index billions of web pages.It use the index to find page that match a set of users-specificed keywords. c)The main search engines are Google,Yahoo,Microsoft network and Ask(www.ask.com)

Metasearch engine search several engine at once and intergrate the finding of the various engine to answer queries posted by users.

Portals a) Is a web base,personalized gateway to information and knowledge that provides relevant information from different IT systems and the internet using advance search and indexing technique.

b) Types of portals:-

i)Commercial(public)portals.The examples are Lycos and Microsoft network.

ii)Affinity portals offer a single point of an entire community of affiliated interest such as hobby group or a political party.The example most likely has an affinity portal for its alumni( UiTM student portal).

COMMUNICATION Electronic Mail(e-mail) a)E-mail is the largerst volume application

running over the internet.Almost 90% of the companies conduct business transaction via e-mail and merely 70% confirm that e-mail is tide to thier means of generating revenue.

Web -Based call centers. b) also known as consumers centers.For

example, if you need to contact a software vendor for technical support,you will usually be communicating with the vendor's web-based call centres using e-mail,a telephone conversation,or a simultinous voice/web session.Web-based call centre are sometimes located in foreign country such as India.
