MGBC PRESIDENT’S REPORT

MGBC President’s ReportSession 2014 - 2015

Dear Members and friends of MGBC,

A year ago when I was elected as President, I made a monumental promise in my inaugural speech – which the current board’s first priority is to attain the ‘Established’ membership status from World Green Building Council (WGBC) for MGBC. This has been a long standing issue as we rose up from a ‘Prospective’ membership status of a GBC to the ‘Emerging’ membership status in the very early days of formation of MGBC in 2010 but has since not risen to the ‘Established’ membership status.

This is of utmost importance as only ‘Established’ members can have a seat on the World Green Building Council Board and recently at the regional level the Asia Pacific Network (APN) is also talking about forming a regional council only consisting of ‘Established’ members. Therefore, the issue of Established Membership is a long standing issue which has become a more serious subject for MGBC, in fact as mentioned above it has become one of the core driving emphasis of my presidential term.

Hence, I am both proud and relieved to announce that we had just recently been accorded the ‘Established’ status by WGBC. Thank you for the hard work that the Board Members, special representative as well MGBC Secretariat whom have contributed in order to achieve this goal. Indeed this is a milestone for MGBC as we finally join the ranks of other established GBCs such as Japan, US, UK, Australia etc. Truly it is a time to be proud to be a Malaysian and a member of MGBC.

On the home front our other activities seem to grow from strength to strength. This term we have seen our annual academia and industry meeting grow into a full fledge symposium in the form of the 2015 Malaysia University-Industry Green Building Collaboration Symposium. Our training and education efforts in both educating all levels of the public and producing GBI facilitators are on a constant rise with numerous events, forums, seminars, workshop and such being conducted. This of course goes hand-in-hand with other efforts that stretches across the Board in breath of industry as well as the corridors of government.

Peering forward to the future, I have a clear image of MGBC’s destiny. I have a dream that one day Malaysia Green Building Confederation shall sit on the World Green Building Council Board and lead it. A dream where all the green communities of the world will look upon Malaysia Green Building Confederation with great admiration and adoration. A dream where, as a nation, the citizens of the world will look up at Malaysia and find an exemplary leader in sustainability and environmentalism.

Sincerely,

AR SARly ADRE SARkuMPresident 2014-2015

MembershipCommittee Chair: Ar Alice Leong Pek LianCommittee Co-Chairperson: Ir Kok Yen Kwan

The aim of the Membership Committee is to encourage a wider participation by the public in MGBC’s affairs, and to implement more programmes which are beneficial to all MGBC members.

MGBC Membership recruitment is steered by the following activities and will be continued in the coming years:

• The Committee has seized every opportunity to organize membership drive in events organized by MGBC or other NGOs i.e PAM, ACEM, MASHRAE and etc, including East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak).

• MGBC participated in exhibitions, various green talks, seminars, conferences organised by MGBC, PAM, IGEM, Universities, Government Bodies and other associations as well as international conferences/events such as DATUM, GBIF Courses, IGEM, ECO-B and etc to promote MGBC and the Membership.

• The Committee is collaborating with PAM and IEM Chapters in order to set up new MGBC Chapters which will generate more new registered members.

• Utilising the modern tele-communication systems such as emailing and direct phone calls to all the accredited GBI Facilitators to encourage them to join MCBC as members.

• Through the publication of GreenPagesMalaysia, we have managed to garner interest from members of public as well as industrial segments in MGBC Membership. GreenPagesMalaysia offers special rates to MGBC members for the publication in both the Product Data Sheets and Advertisements.

Incentives on becoming a member of MGBC are:

• Existing members who renew their memberships before 22 December of each year are entitled to a 2 half day CPD vouchers or 1 full day CPD Voucher, for CPDs conducted by MGBC.

• New members who join between January and June will be given 2 half day CPD vouchers, whereas new members who join between July and December entitled to 1 full day CPD Voucher, for CPDs conducted by MGBC.

MGBC Membership Committee will continue to promote MGBC to all the professionals and members of public. The Committee also encourages more students to join as Student Members, as they will be the future Professional or Corporate Members.

Education

EDuCATION

The MGBC Education Committee aims to promote green and sustainability to the general public via education and research event related programmes that support the MGBC’s strategic plans.

This Committee has a total of 16 members, 9 of which are academicians while the remaining 7 are professionals from the industry. The committee members had discussed and lined up a few educational programmes as per below:

a) Green Awards (MGBC-EcoKnights Collaboration)b) International Green Environment and Building Workshop (MGBC-KALAM UTM Collaboration)c) 2015 MU-IGBC Symposium (MGBC-HRC UPM Collaboration)

On top of these programmes, publications in mass media were also used to promote awareness of green architecture and urban planning to the general public.

The Committee has agreed to work with EcoKnight on the following programmes, planned to be held in 2015, to enhance the level of environmental awareness, and promote green design and practices among university and college students:

• Green Awards (particularly ‘Green Space’ category). The Committee will join EcoKnight’s Roadshow among local universities to promote participations of such awards. The roadshow will also include Green Talk for Students.

• Green Building Camp which is a sustainability camp through which students are trained to be Green Ambassadors.

It is anticipated that such programmes could also serve as a platform to promote MGBC memberships among academicians and students.

PARTNERshiP wiTh GLOBAL GREEN TAG FOR GLOBAL GREEN TAG (GGT) LiFE CYCLE AssEssMENT (LCA) RATiNG FOR BUiLdiNG MATERiALs

MGBC is now exploring the potential to form a partnership with Global Green Tag International to implement Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Rating scheme for local building materials.

The intent of this partnership is to develop capacity and capability within MGBC, with the potential for a viable business to enable building materials and products to be LCA certified. This is a continuance of the gradual and incremental stringency in vetting the materials and products declared in our GreenPagesMalaysia (GPM) by way of Product Data Sheets (PDS). A brainstorm meeting between MGBC, Global Green Tag representatives was held on 28th and 29th October 2014.

A survey on LCA Label has been conducted with all MGBC Members and Existing GPM clients on 13th November 2014. Total of 25 have responded to the survey.
