PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE:IT'S MORE THAN A MEAL!

Have you applied for our district's free meal program yet? If not, please do so now! Qualifyingis so much more than access to free breakfast and lunch! It gives your family free or reducedcommunity sports, internet access, testing fees and more. It also brings in a significantamount of funding to our school. Last year, each qualifying application brought in about $400for a total of over $60,000. This makes a huge difference! We use these funds for academicinterventions during and after school, counseling supports, materials, and much more.

There are two ways to qualify, either by income or by being "doubled up." Please look overthis income chart to see if you might be eligible by income. You might be pleasantlysurprised! If you are living with another family or adult (e.g. grandparent, friends, cousins,roommate) you are considered doubled up. If this is your situation, please contact our officeso we can assist you with the residency affidavit.

It is easy to apply online here. Please do it as soon as possible so your family can startreceiving benefits and we can secure our school funding. For those who received benefitslast year, the last day to reapply is September 15. If you have any questions, concerns orneed assistance, we are happy to help.

COASTAL BILINGUAL PROGRAM: San Luis Coastal is exploring an expansion of bilingual education on the coast atBaywood Elementary. The program would begin with the kindergarten class of 2020-2021 and continue to add a grade leveleach year thereafter. More details can be found at this website. This Thursday is a School Board Study Session. It is at6:00 PM at Baywood Elementary. Child care and food will be provided. At the Study Session, a robust report will be sharedand public input will be taken. On Tuesday, September 17, the board will be voting on whether or not to move forward. Themeeting is at 6:00 at Del Mar Elementary in Morro Bay.

FROM THE ART ROOM: Thanks to funding from our PTA, our students have art instruction with Mrs.Vaccaro spread throughout the school year. Right now she is working with our upper grade students.The fifth grade classes have been working on the Great Wave by Hokusai. This project explores howcolor creates movement in the sky and in the sea. Mount Fuji hides in the very back of the picture as afocal point but each artist creates white water and the great wave and boats (see photo). The fourthgraders and Mrs. Kirby's third graders have been working on the school of fish project. This explores theconcepts of overlapping and the idea of wonder when you only see a part of one fish on the paper. Thethird graders with Mrs. Haas have been working on the Henri Matisse fishbowl. This project explores

how glass and three dimensional forms would look if painted on paper. Your support of PTA makes these great art activitiespossible. Thank you, families!

MUSIC WEBSITE FOR 4TH & 5TH GRADERS: My name is Troy Kutch, and I am one of the upper grade music teachers atMonarch Grove. I created a website as a resource for all 4th and 5th grade music students. It provides student with amyriad of supports including chord and fingering charts for their instruments, announcements, up to date agendas, andvideo resources to help guide their playing. I highly recommend bookmarking the website so that it is saved to your desktopat home.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY LUNCH ON SEPTEMBER 20: Our first of three Friends and Family Lunches is on Friday,September 20 from 12:10-12:50 PM. 1st-5th graders picnic with their friends and families. Adults often bring in specialmeals to share, like pizzas or sandwiches. TK and Kinder families are welcome to attend, too, as long as an adultaccompanies the student. Please communicate with your child about plans for this day so we can avoid confusion, hurtfeelings and tears. 

LIBRARY CORNER: Battle of the Books: We have had a great start to Battle this year! 84 quizzes have already been takenand some students are well on their way to qualifying.  Check back here and at the display in the MPR to see who hasqualified. Library Volunteers:  The library still needs volunteers, especially during 1st -3rd grade library times.  Please stopby the library or email me if you are interested! Library Game Day: Thursday is now game day in the library and we are inneed of some new or gently used games and activities.  They should be appropriate for ages 6-11 and easy enough to playduring a lunch period.  I have started an Amazon wish list of some ideas I think would be good.  Thank you so much foryour generosity in supporting our Monarch library! VOLUNTEERING VERSUS OBSERVING: We love volunteers! We love when families want to observe! However, there is aclear distinction, which can be confusing. A volunteer is here to do a specific job or duty, usually for a teacher, and istypically scheduled on a regular basis. Volunteers are often found in classrooms working directly with students or in theclassroom or office prepping materials or organizing supplies. Observers are individuals who want to come to watch a classand/or their child. There is no specific job or duty to be completed. According to district policy, observations should bescheduled with the teacher and principal at least 24 hours in advance. Observers are typically accompanied by the principalor designee and the length of the observation is set in advance. If you would like to observe, please contact our office tomake arrangements. 

BOX TOPS ARE GOING ELECTRONIC: Starting this year, Box Tops has a new way to earn money for Monarch Grove. Atits core, the program structure and purpose remain the same – to help schools get what they need. HOW TO TALK TO CHILDREN ABOUT DIFFERENCES: Explore information and gain guidance on how to talk to kids aboutrace, gender, ability, culture and other differences. This 2 hour class will present information for children 0-8 years with anemphasis on early childhood ages. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss, inquire and practice strategies toaddress bias and explore these sometimes tricky issues in a caring and supportive environment. The class is on Thursday,September 19 from 6:00-8:00PM. Child care is available. For more information and how to register, see this flyer.

AFTER SCHOOL SPANISH CLASS: Sign your child up for after school enrichment Spanish class right here at MonarchGrove! TK/K meets Wednesdays (Sept. 18-May 22) from 2:15-3:15. Cost is $360 for the entire school year. 1st-5th meets onThursdays (Sept. 19-May 21) from 2:45-3:45 and is $380 for the school year. Scholarships are available. LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES: Our P.E. teacher, Mrs. Kersten, runs noon sports every Thursday and Friday at lunch. Noonsports are an optional opportunity for students who want more structured game time. Everyone is welcome to join! Mrs.Monroe, our P.E. aide, is passionate about yoga. She is teaching yoga sessions for students at lunch on Tuesdays andFridays. The library is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for book checkout and other activities. Encourageyour children to join in on the fun!

HATE SIGNING OUT FOR DENTAL APPOINTMENTS? GET TEETH CLEANING AT SCHOOL: This year we have partneredwith SLO County Public Health for a program called Virtual Dental Home. This is available to all children -- insurance or not!A hygenist comes to school and picks up your child for their x-rays, pictures of the mouth, teeth cleaning, fluoride andsealants (if needed). A dentist reviews the x-rays and pictures off site and then the parent/guardian is notified of the results.No more signing in and out or rushing after school! We hope you will take advantage of this amazing program. There was aninterest form in the welcome back packet or you can complete it via ParentSquare.

TRAFFIC REMINDERS: Rosina Drive between Pine and Doris is a private drive and should not be used by anyone butresidents. Please be aware of the no turn signs from Los Osos Valley Road onto Doris. The CHP does ticket violators. 

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL: A new medication consent form will need to be completed and signed by your healthcareprovider each school year. Forms are available from the school secretary.
