INTRODUCTION

Mexico D.F. is full of habitants and the people who live there are chilangos.

This word “chilango” came from náhuatl which is an ancient culture in Mexico: ixachilanca.

Ixachilanca means people with red skin. It was built on Tenochtitlan, the old azteca capital,

in 1325 by the Mexicas who named Mexico-Tenochtitlan.

It is called “The city of Palaces” and is the most ancient capital in whole America.

Mexico The country of Mexico is in

Northamerica To the north is USA and to the south is

Guatemala and Belice. Between the Pacific Ocean and

Caribbean sea.

Mexico DF is surrounded by the cities of Queretaro, Hidalgo, Michoacan, Morelos and Guerrero.

Mexico DF is divided in 16 delegations, being Mexico City the most important.

POPULATION AND LANGUAGE

The population in Mexico City is 8.8 million of people.

In whole Mexico State or City of Mexico Metropolitan Zone there are near 20 million of people in 1479km2.

It is one of the most populated cities in the world like New York and Tokyo

The principal language is Spanish with a special intonation very recognizable.

The second language is English There are indigenous languages like

nahualt, otomí, mixteco and zapoteco, specially in the countryside

RELIGION

The most of the population is catolic. Mexico is the second city with most catolic

population in the world. Other religions: Protestant evangelical,

Jehovah’s witness, among others. They have devotion to Virgen de

Guadalupe. The history of Virgen de Guadalupe date

from 1531 when she appears to San Juan Diego and tell him that goes to see the bishop of Mexico for showing his ayate which had the image of a virgen with mixed race features and some roses

Virgen de Guadalupe day: from 9th to 12th Decembre.

RELIGION

The Virgen de Guadalupe was named the Independence symbol in 1810.

When Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a priest and military novohispanico, entered to a church and started to pray, after that went out and started:“El Grito de dolores”, which marked the beginning of mexican independence.

He put this Virgin in his independence flag and, on 15th of september to 11pm, cried this sentence: ¡Viva la Independencia! ¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! ¡Muera el mal gobierno! ¡Viva Fernando VII !

USEFUL INFORMATION

Public transport: by subway is the most easily and cheaper way for visiting the city.

By bus is a little bit dangerous, normally the mexican people call them “pecero”.

By taxi is a confortable way to visit the city and outskirts of Mexico DF. The tourists can rent one to use during all them holidays.

RELIVE AND CLIMATE The city of Mexico have a height from 2240m on sea level to 2930m in sierra de Guadalupe and have a horseshoe form.

Mexico DF is surronding by volcanics mountains and in the middle is a big lake where the city was built.

Climate: It has 4 kinds of climate: 1) Semi-sec mild. Temperature from12ºC to18ºC.2 Mild subhumid with summer rains. Temperature from12ºC to19ºC.3) Semi-cold subhumid with summer rains. Temperature from 5ºC to 12ºC.4) Semi-cold humid with abundant summer rains. Temperature from 5ºC to12ºC.

CELEBRATIONS AND CUSTOMS

The Dead day or halloween is every 1st and 2nd day of Novembre.

Dia de los murtos in Mexico city is a special celebration where people remember and honor them family and friends deceased making altars with flowers and brightly elements colored, and offering at own homes, cooking the favourite food of them deceased and doing activities that they do before to dead.

People go to the cemetary and spend them time talking stories about family o friends deceased.

In the markets you can buy sugar or chocolat skulls, pan de muerto

It is a very important celebration in Mexico where people have a fantastic way to see the dead.

CELEBRATIONS AND CUSTOMS

Mexican Independence day is on 15th Septembre. Many mexicans go to the Zocalo and celebrate joyfully this day with fireworks display and typical food stalls, meanwhile take place a big dinner in the Palacio Nacional.

Mexican Revolution day takes place on 20th Novembre in 1910 when the Revolution fathers, Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa and Carranza among others, fighted for seeing Mexico free and without social differents. There is many corridos inspired by this revolution.

CELEBRATIONS AND CUSTOMS Cockfight Bullfight,being La monumental the

biggest bullring in the world where as well as bullfight take place concerts and different kinds of shows

Charreria: the beggining was when the charros or hacendados needed mark the livestock(bulls, cows and horses) one by one, this activity became in a show with the time.

NORTH: BASILICA DE GUADALUPE

It was built in 1695 by Pedro Arrieta, and in 1976 was built the new Basilica de Guadalupe close to old Basilica, this Basilica has inside the ayate of Virgin of Guadalupe.

NORTH: CERRO DE TEPEYAC

In this place was the appearance of Virgin of Guadalupe to Juan Diego, it is a place of pilgrimage.

SOUTH: XOCHIMILCO

In the Anáhuac valley we find the Xochimilco famous for its channels. It is the land of flowers

It was declared a world heritage site in 1987 by UNESCO. The canoe are “trajineras” and you can pay a boat trip for only 200 pesos, the length of trip is 1hour by trajinera.

It was declared a world heritage in 2007 by UNESCO and is one of five most prestigious universities in the world among Harvard(USA), Oxford(London), La Sorbona(France) and Tsinghua(China).

It is a ecologic park where tourist can practice Ecotourism, it has 2 and half hectares and Magdalena River, the only river alive in Mexico DF, forms a stream net very beutiful.

It is a very traditional quarter, was founded in the Colonial Age and still preserve this spirit

SOUTH-EAST: CERRO DE LA ESTRELLA

National Park since1938 where there are an archaeological zone, museum and many legends like Devil Cave legend. It has 1093ha, also tourist can see the whole city on the top of the hill. It is an Azteca settlement.

WEST: BOSQUE DE CHAPULTEPEC

Chapultepec forest is the biggest of whole Latin America, 686ha. This name means chapulin, grasshopper. It has many museums and sculptures.

It is one of the most important mariachi headquarter in Mexico and is full of tradition, history and, of course, mexican music.

CENTRE: REFORMA AVENEU AND ANGEL OF THE INDEPENDENCE

It is the second important aveneu in Mexico DF. THE Angel of the independence was built in 1910 to celebrate the first centenary of Mexican independence.

It is a museum too. It was built to celebrate the first centenary of the mexican revolution, there tourist can know who was the fathers of revolution and why was so important for all mexican people.

CENTRE: INSURGENT AVENUE AND WORLD TRADE CENTER

Insurgent aveneu is the biggest aveneu in Mexico which cross the city from north to south. It is 28km long. The WTC is a conference and exhibition center.

The last Mexica Emperor, It is at the juction of Insurgentes aveneu and Reforma.

It was built in 1904 in commemoration of Mexican independence, where tourist can value the mexicna art.

TEOTIHUACAN: THE PLACE WHERE MEN BECOME GODS

It is only 50km from Mexico City to the east and is one of the most important tourist attraction in the country. It is a word heritage in 1987 and was used for different native civilizationes. From Friday to Sunday take place old native dances for Sun worship.

In order:The traditional corn tortilla is the base of mexican food, is like bread in Spain. Fritada de ranas. Tacos. Hot peppers of different kinds. Mole, with rice, chicken and mole sauce(with chocolat). Nopalitos con chipotle

GASTRONOMY

Arrachera is a beef steak with a guacamole and jalapeños diced garnish. Chile en Nogada is a chile stuffing of beef or chicken with promegranate seeds and coriander leaves, it has a white sauce. This platillo represent the colors of Mexico flag.
