• Mexico lies on the south and the west between the Pacific Ocean, and to the east of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. It is bordered by California, Arizona, new Mexico, and Texas.

Language

Spanish is one of the main languages spoke in Mexico. Mostly all Mexicans speak alittle but of Spanish. About 7 or 8 percent of the people in Mexico speak an Amerindian language.

Religion

• More than half of the population is Roman Catholic. Mexican Catholicism includes folklore and practices of the pre-European religions.

MAJOR HOLIDAYS

• Holy Week is a week leading up to the

crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus which is Easter in America. Another holiday is the Day of the Dead which is on November 2nd. Its when people visit the graves of their loved ones and leave behind fruits and flowers.

LIVING CONDITIONS

• More than half of Mexican families are poorly housed. Only half of all houses have piped water and flush toilets but about 90 percent have electric lighting.

FAMILY LIFE

• The household in many cases includes grandparents, aunts, and uncles as well as parents and children. Married children and their spouses also stay in the house until they can afford to get their own households.

CLOTHING

• The women mostly wear a skirt with a sleeveless shirt with lots of jewelry. The peasants wear pajama like pants and a long bleached shirt.

FOOD

• The food they eat Is very similar to ours. They eat corn, beans, squash, and chili peppers all in a taco shell.

EDUCATION

• Six years of education are free for children from ages six through fourteen. Many of the children do not complete the 6 years of education.

EMPLOYMENT

• Workers are guaranteed by law minimum wages, legal holidays, paid vacations, collective bargaining, and the right to strike. Most Mexicans work as farmers or merchants.

SPORTS

• Fútbol (soccer) is the most popular sport in Mexico and brings in 100,000 spectators to their matches. Other popular sports are baseball, golf, tennis, swimming, bicycling, track and field, and jai alai. Bullfighting and the jaripeo, or rodeo are also considered sports.

CRAFTS AND HOBBIES

• Some of the crafts and hobbies are murals and yarn and bark paintings. Folk sculptures include masks, papier-mâché skeletons, and candle-bearing trees of life.

RECREATION

SOCIAL PROBLEMS

• Many Mexicans do not have health care and are poorly fed. Air pollution is a health hazard in urban centers and Mexico has been named one of the most dangerous cities to have a business in.

Ethnicity

• 60% to 70% of the Mexican population is considered to be mestizo, a mixture of Europeans and indigenous people.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

• Mexico draws both Spanish and its Amerindian heritage. The most popular stringed instrument in Mexico is the guitar. Most of the bands are accompanied by trumpets.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

There are many hospitals, clinics, literacy programs, orphanages, nursing homes, schools, women's ministries, migrant ministries, jail and prison ministries, and homeless shelters in Mexico

GENDER ISSUES

• Women are treated different than men in Mexico. Women carry out tasks, for which they do not receive any income. Drug abuse, alcoholism, and violence has made some men unemployed which effects the women.

• Protestant churches, Jehovah's Witnesses, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Light of the World Church, and non-Christian religions, including Native American religions, Judaism, Islam are some of the other religions

• Most of the clothes in Mexico are casual. Women usually wear dresses or skirts with a short sleeved shirt along with lots of jewlery. Men usually wear pants with a long sleeved shirt with a hat.

• Mexico`s two famous sports are Fútbol (soccer) and baseball. Guadalajara and the Américas team of Mexico City are two of the Futbol teams in Mexico. Fernando Valenzuela and Vinnie Castilla are two of their baseball players that are in the major leagues.

• Bullfighting (charreria) Is one of the most popular things to watch in Mexico. There are 35 arenas in Mexico. Plaza México is the largest bullring in the world, which seats 55,000 people.

• About half of the population is employed as small business owners. Mexico is scrambling to find jobs for younger people that come into the work force each year.

• The money in Mexico is actually called Pesos. 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 pesos. Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 pesos, and 20 and 50 centavos.

• Enchiladas, which is tortillas coated in chilli sauce and then stuffed with vegetables and chicken is one of the most famous foods in Mexico and even a popular dish here in the United States.

• For low to middle class housing, you could find humble palm shacks along the coast. Medium income families would afford brick houses with a small backyard and sometimes, a front garage or lawn. Upper-class people in Mexico usually buy pretty large departments and lofts.

• Schools in Mexico have to wake up at 6:00 am and get a ride to school from either their parents or someone else's parents because they don’t have a bus system. The student then get out of school around 2:30 pm.
