ON THE WIRE“GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS”

You may not have the time to stay current on all of your favorite shows, a common side effect of actually having a life, but that does not mean that you have to be out of the know.

Check out these hand dandy summaries of people who are will-ing to let it all hang out for your own personal amusement. Just remember, they are not a guide to better living.

The Real Housewives of NJThe RHoNJ have taken things to a new point of obviousness when they devote an entire episode to the fact that these housewives do not have jobs. If the first words off of your lips were Duh, you are not alone. Of course a housewife does not work, that is the definition of the word: a woman who has chosen to make wife and mother her primary occupation.

In this episode the wives consider expanding their rolls. Melissa after singing in the laundry room decides that she is going to be the next Lady Gaga, and buys a shiny gold dress to go along with her new image. A word of advice Melissa, rock your own image. Copies never fare well in the market. Empty nester Caroline looks to turn her blog into an advice show and Kathy makes her kids sign a pledge in regards to their future performance. The only one to get an actual job is Ashley, but we don’t exactly know what line of work she it in.

Jerseylicious

In a recent episode Olivia gets the chance to prove her worth to the Gatsby by organizing her own makeover event. The good news Olivia is that you are finally in charge. The bad news is that you have to work with your arch nemesis Tracy. In classic form she is ready and willing to throw in a monkey wrench and create the drama. Can these two survive in the same room with a bouncer to pull them apart? Apparently, but only just barely.

BridalplastyIn the wedding finale special episode of bridalplasty the happy bridenstein shows off the results of her self-induced body tampering. As expected the big day went off without any rain, drunken family members making highly inappropri-ate toasts or seepage from the surgical sites. Just remem-ber that the bride isn’t blushing, she’s swelling. They just cover it up with a lot of pancake foundation.

BridezillasThis show continues its trend of giving you the worst of women who are about to celebrate their love, by steam-rolling over anyone and everyone: including their fiancée’s. This episode introduces us to two new zillas that are willing to steep to any level of baseness to get that look of simple elegance.

There it is, the short and not so sweet version of what hap-pens in the sometimes rough and rowdy world of reality TV.

SOAPBOX HERO“cORRuPTION IN THE gARdEN STATE”

Recent events that feature a certain well-known figure in the politics of the Gar-den State, namely one current governor, has given residents of the sense a sense of eerie déjà vu and of course whiplash.

Like all serious issues this one has its funny side if for no other reason then the fact that this man came into office on the heals of a very similar issue, one where he promised to be a better man and a better governor.

Whether your personal opinion swings towards believing that on the whole he managed to keep his word or not the sense of poetic justice and profound irony has to be making a ping on your internal radar.

A man hired to replace a governor that spent millions of dollars on the use of taxpayer money to find jet fueled vacations to tropical hotspots is currently under investigation of the potential misuse of another flying vehicle: Police helicopters. Of course you have to wonder what exactly the governor was doing using a police helicopter 36 times in three months?

Yes, you have that right. This is two governors in a row who cannot seem to keep themselves out of trouble, when it comes to getting into the air. It smacks of a stunning lack of originality at the very least.

New Jersey is a 4-hour state because you can drive the whole thing, top to bottom

Page 11: Metropolis Nights July Edition

SOAPBOX HEROin four hours. Less, if you make judicious use of EZ pass, carpool lanes and treat speed signs like helpful suggestions. Otherwise known as being a Jersey driver. It is not like we live in Pennsylvania or Texas, two states in which regular travel by air makes sense if you want to get around.

In a state where you can get from one pizza parlor to the next by walking, because they’re only two blocks away form each other. Flying to your destination seems more than a little bit extravagant. Though, at least this is the best way to ensure that you are not caught speeding on the state highways.

Of course, while he is one of the most mockable examples of our issues like any good dysfunctional family the trout is more than passed around the line.

The former mayor of Secaucus, Dennis Elwell, has been put up on charges for taking bribes from a federal informant, proving that. 34 people are lining up to testify against him, proving that we can all enjoy a little bit of palm greasing.

The same thing can be said of a high ranking state department of correc-tions office, though you have to wonder exactly what an inmate could bribe people with, chocolate bars or perhaps a top of the line shiv? Quite frankly, this can go on for days. If you check out any of the major news sites dedicated to our fair state and you will see that “Corruption” is a common theme. On some sites it even has its own section, one that is oddly separate from the “Politics” section of the site.

So maybe we should go and pull some weeds from our gardens. The only question left is where we should begin. Oh, that and where can I find an industrial sized vat of Round Up. Cause we are going to need a lot of it in order to clean up a mess of this magnitude.

What a STUPID ...Here we are again, with more of the dumbest things that people have said inside the borders of the Gar-den State. Have a good laugh and just remember that these people are best avoided.

· Jersey Girls are always on the prowl. - No we’re not, and you’re not attractive enough to be prowled by anyone.

· The gas clerks won’t leave me alone. - They can’t by law.

· They’re the attitude Capitol of the world. - So what? You got a problem with that!

· Let’s go to the shore. - See, I can already tell you’re not from here or you would be going down the shore.

· Why not try the blue pill? You only live once! - And I guess you’re look-ing to make it as short of a run as possible.

· That’s not club music, its techno. - I’m terrified that you can tell the dif-ference a block away from the club.

· You have a New Jersey accent. - Of course I do. I’m not standing here amazed that you have a southern accent.

· You can’t afford it honey. - If I could figure out how to divide a penny I would, but no one wants it.

· That ride looks safe enough. - Really, you think being strung up by two large rubber bands 100 feet above the boardwalk is safe? Let’s but some stock on margin next.

· This is the only place you can get tomatoes. - No, it is the only place you can get GOOD tomatoes, there is a difference.

· You can wear a sleeveless shirt anywhere in this state. - If you really be-lieve that you have serious issues. We don’t wear then to nice restaurants, family events or church at a bear minimum.

· They’ll drink anything. - While I do know some people who are like that the majority of them are transplants. Probably because they had to live in your state first.

· 80’s style never dies here. - NJ had big hair long before the 80’s came around and we’re not giving it up any time soon. Get over it.

· Sure you can make a U. It’s called the Turnpike isn’t it? - Never, ever say things like that to a new driver. The sad truth is that they usually believe you.

· We have to leave the state to go to the Meadowlands! I’m sure its in NY babe. - No. You don’t. People seem to forget that it is actually in NJ, even though you can see NY from the area.

· Jersey City its like a black hole. You can do anything there and no one will ever know about it. - I really wish I could dispute this one, but I’ve gotten away with too much there.

· We should go to Six Flags. - Which one? Yes, there is more than one. No, they are not all local. Oh, did you mean Great Adventure?

· Why would anyone want a hard roll? It would hurt your mouth. - Be-cause they taste good and they are not literally hard.

· You can go bowl any time of night in this state. - Really, where?

· I wanna see the MTV house. - You do know that MTV isn’t actually there anymore, right?

“THE STORY SPINNER”

The Limelight

2.bp.blogspot.com

Those of you who paid attention in middle school Language Arts class may remember the myth of Arachne. She was an ancient Greek girl who was so talented at weaving she managed to best the goddess Minerva in a competition. For her trouble, she was turned into a spider.

In the modern world the literal kind of weaving is, for the most part, relegated to the floors of factories owned by large textile companies but some of us seem to have replaced it with a different type of weaving, the weaving of stories about each other by taking conjecture and theories and restating them as the facts of the situation.

You know it by a more common name, gossip. Of course, you could also call it rumors or insinuendo if you want to sound classy while you are talking about other people behind their backs.

Now, I am not willing to argue that any of us are virtuous paragons of tight lippedness, unless you have some serious connec-tions to the world of organized crime and you don’t want to find yourself on the business end of a 45 special the odds are that you have indulged in talking about other people every once and a while. Probably in a casual way, or perhaps when they have

Author: Katie Gatto

12

Page 15: Metropolis Nights July Edition

done something particularly scandalous, such as sleeping with your cousins fiancé the week before the wedding.

What separates that behavior from someone on the gossip squad is how far you go out of your way to perpetuate the news at hand. A chat with your best friend puts you in good stead. A group discussion with two of three good friends is iffy, depending on the news and your friend’s ability to keep it to themselves after the conversation is over. If what you do includes more than one phone call, text messages to multiple parties or a group larger than three people, then you have become a gossip.

The question is, why do people feel like it is OK to gossip? Eschewing all research into the human mind, and the complex social interactions of mam-mals, I present you with this theory. A gossip is a person who is basically boring. Their lives are not interesting and basically lacking, but like all of us they have the need to be, from time to time, the center of attention.

When you can’t get attention by doing something the next best choice, talk-ing about someone else, is often an easy way to get all ears onto you, without having to put forth any real effort of your own. These people are no different from your favorite reality TV stars; they will say anything to extend their 15 minutes in the spotlight.

So the next time Jane-spread-the-news comes over to tell you about the forbidden fruits make out session that the very married Jamie had with one of her office mates at an off site meeting, or just how short Sara’s skirt was last night, you may want to smile, nod and reassess if this is someone you re-ally need to have in your life, After all, if the best that they can offer is other peoples lives do you really need to spend your time with them?

ANIMALINSIDE YOU

“OUR SELFISH CREATURES”

The animal inside of each of us is inherently a selfish creature. After all, taking care of number one has been part of surviving in the harsh wilds of the world. In the wilds of modern society we have to learn to work together to achieve our goals and thrive. We, with the exception of a random loonie or two, live and work as part of a community. This means that you have to sublimate your natural urges to put yourself first. Well, at least you have to try but it does not always work.

16

Page 19: Metropolis Nights July Edition

That is where the common small acts of selfishness come into play in our world and man can those actions can be very annoying. You encounter them everyday and sadly you may be so used to this behavior that it does not even register on your radar anymore, but they are there and ready to make your work and personal life just a little bit less fun.

It begins when you get up in the morning and it won’t let up until the end of the day.

No doubt your inconsiderate roommate has taken the last cup of coffee in the pot. Probably while you were in the shower, so that you did not have any chance to object or at least suggest that she make a new pot for you.

Then you have to get onto the road and you won’t find any altruists there. As a matter of fact you can consider your-self luck if the number of times you get cut off, honked at or forced to slam on your brakes is only the single digits.

Then, you have to go into work and things are always a free for all when your salary is on the line. Everyone is going to try to dump their excess or perhaps even their regular, work onto your lap. If you don’t fend them off you could easily end up in an ava-lanche of to do’s and an endless inbox. Before you even finish checking your email the requests begin to pour in.

At lunch time you will be lucky if your brown bag has stayed in tact with this group of mercenaries and rogues in fact even a labeled bag can be considered fair game for a short on cash sand-wich burglar or beverage borrower. The odds are that at least one them will have been misplaced. Sadly, short of rigging the fridge with its own CCTV setup you will probably never know who to ask for reimbursement or your $1.25.

When it comes to the drive home, which is equally as arduous of a task as the way there only with the added joy of exhaustion and finally make it to your house.

Since you are young one hopes you won’t be spending the night at home in front of your TV set. It’s time to go out. After going to your closet to discover the same roommate borrowed your leather pants you hit the club. After fending off would be line jumpers you finally make it in and get the chance to marvel at the new animal inside of all of us can be so selfish.

MEANINGFUL MOMENTS

If you are going to have fun, then you should go big. After all, you only have a limited amount of time in your life and limited amount of money in your budget that you can spend on goofing off. This month we are going to look at some of the most unique ways that you can have your fun and get some great memories in the process. If you happen use one as a first date you can be sure that you are sure to make a strong im-pression on the person that you are looking to impress on this date.

Get High (In a Balloon)If you get hooked up with a reputable service, such as In Flight Balloon Adventures in Clinton NJ, you will be able to get up in the air without too much risk. They have been in the air since 1987, flying over the Northwest part of the state. It is extremely romantic, and a great way to show people that NJ is not just the petrochemical refinery state. Just be sure to pick a day that has a good weather forecast. If it is bad outside you will not be going up, up and away.

Make Some Mozzarella

A good rule of thumb for happy living is Do Not Date anyone who doesn’t like Mozzarella cheese. It is just unnatural, especially in a state with this many Italians. Places like The Grape Escape in Dayton NJ hold regular cheese making event. It is a little bit of science, a little bit of cooking and a great way to show off your general fabulousness. As a general rule guys who can cook are a prized catch, as are men who are willing to learn. You can prove both those things with this date.

Indulge Your Inner Naughty Child (At Liberty Science

Center) If you never got to have the perverse joy of touching things at a museum, or you just happen to really love your 3D movies then you should consider visiting Liberty Science Center, a staple of the Garden State childhood, and a place for adults to goof off. You can see a quazi-education film, eat some astronaut ice cream and spend some quality time in the touch tunnel. What you and your date do in that dark tunnel is nobodies business but your own.

Have a Dinner Cruise This option has some old world romance and charm attached to it. For the price of admission you can get a 4.5-hour cruise on any Friday or Saturday night in the New York Harbor, complete with dinner and dancing. It is the ultimate in romance, and if you want to do it in the morning there is a brunch cruise as well. The boat leaves from Perth Amboy every week.

There you have it, four of the most memorable things that you can do in the NJ for an amazing night out, you can do them for a date or get together with some friends and have a lot of fun. Consider your options and then go for it. After all, you only live once.

WHAT SUMMERIS TO ME!

Jacquelina24

Page 27: Metropolis Nights July Edition

Summer 2011 Approaches and the whole state of New Jersey can’t wait to go down the shore for all the holi-days! But not me! I spend all the holidays with my fam-ily! When I was younger I did the whole Jersey Shore thing every holiday I could! Even a half day in high school meant time to go down the shore! As I got older I came to realize spending the time at my mother’s pool, my in-law’s pool, and with my husband and I’s family just meant so much more! This past Memorial Day weekend and July 4th weekend I spent with family, end-less bbqing, cannon balls in the pool with the little cous-ins, loud 60’s music blasting, dance off with the family, relaxing in the lounge chair... To me that’s a holiday! Not an over crowded beach that had shark warnings not too long ago and sand where at any minute you can step on a cracked Corona bottle buried in the sand! Don’t get me wrong I love the beach, but spending time with my close family and friends means a lot more to me! This summer I have a few vacations planned with the family! One week in Lake George, a week in Wildwood, and a week in the Poconos, all vacations with the family! I’d love to go away somewhere tropical but I’m terrified of flying! Also my grandparents and my husbands’ are get-ting older; I would rather spend the summers with them. Family and friends mean so much to me, the memories are so important and as you get older you realize that! I love Wildwood! It’s clean, family oriented, and when I walk the boardwalk I feel like a little kid in a candy shop! There’s so much to do! Lake George is just beauti-ful - the huge lake, the sights, it’s very relaxing! And the Poconos I love! The Poconos is like a huge nature walk, the animals, the farms, the beautiful land! I wouldn’t change these vacations for anything especially because my husband and I go with family and it’s a blast!!! Although summer is my favorite season, I still have to work! I work at Anthony Robert Salon in Verona 3 days a week (Tues-Fri-Sat) but that still gives me 4 days to spend time with my loved ones and have some summer fun! Plus Anthony Lombardi, my boss, is awesome and was really cool about my vacation days! I look at my life right now being married for over a year, having such a wonderful big family, accepting and loving in-laws, amazing friends, being a hair stylist and loving every minute of it, being on a reality tv show (Jerseylicious), and I look up to God everyday and thank Him for every-thing He has given me! I am truly blessed.

Love _ Jacquelina!

FashionA MIX AND A MATCH

Author: Deana Spiotti “Queen Buzz”

photos from chictopia.com

26

Page 29: Metropolis Nights July Edition

From the hottest trends to the unique trends…it’s about who is wearing what and how they are rocking it. Of course we dib and dab in the magazines, internet sources and our best friends closet for those perfect pieces, but when it comes to upscale fashion and beauty. . . I have the buzz for you.Fashion is forever extending its arms and allowing anything from boho chic to accessorized girl next door. The question is what is fashion and what is not fashion? Can you really take a Forever 21 shirt and rock it with a pair of Louboutins? YES…YES AND YES!

Last summer I had the honor to film an interview of Richie Rich, the god of all fashion. He basically described fashion as a mix and a mingle. Take your first class things and throw them in with your middle class things. . . when it comes to

fashion everything has a label so really why should we judge what’s good and what’s not!

The reality is the trends come from you…I love walking the city streets, camera in hand, and snapping shots of what these runway street walkers are wearing. . . from a simple layered up black ensemble with a pop of color to 80’s inspired rocker chic look… these really are the days of our lives. From red carpet to stylish plain Jane, some hot accessories are from the color of your nail polish to the feathers in your hair. Yes, I said feathers! And jewelry, you don’t have to break the bank. Pink Jewels in Livingston, NJ has just what the fashion doctor order. Newest housewife from the Real Housewives of New Jersey Kathy Wakile frequents this boutique and here is the high and low mixture again. . . get your accessories and jewelry for less and work those red bottom soles!

Listen, if someone is seriously going to take the time to pick apart your look, your style, your fashion. . .then obviously something caught their eye and BINGO…fashion in the making! Be you…allow that to come out in what you wear.

I personally like to keep it simple, yet let my accessories turn up the volume…I will take a simple Forever 21 black shirt, pair with a pair of jeans or shorts, then spice it up with a HEET exotic bracelet and a pair of wedges from Jenna & Molly (umm $50). . . It’s about mixing and matching, switching and swapping, like a recycling program, but only in your closet! So when it comes to fashion and the beauty of it all, maybe being a tom boy was worth it when I was young, maybe adoring my Barbie dolls later in life was perfect, or maybe just the whole Richie Rich theory is the answer to the fashion prayers….

So remember…wear them low…wear them high…you make the fashion!

Alisa MariaThe Queen of High-End Fashion

Author: Will Love :: www.LoveWillLove.com

From her luxurious taste, to her powerhouse resume, and her striking appear-ance, Alisa Maria is unquestionably a force to be reckoned with in the world of high fashion. A Jersey-native and life-long resident, the Montville mogul grew up in East Orange, and from early childhood developed an instant love affair with the glamour of “Old Hollywood.”

During her teenage years, Alisa began to take a much more serious approach to fashion. In high school, she was the “go-to” girl for styling tips and advice, and after graduation, Alisa went on to achieve subsequent success as an SAG-accredited actress, dancer, and model. Nevertheless, like with all loves in life, Alisa came back to her biggest passion – premiere fashions!

28

Page 31: Metropolis Nights July Edition

More recently, Alisa Maria has designed her own private label of luxury python and fur pieces. Debuting during the annual Mercedes-Benz “New York Fashion Week” to a sweeping response from both critics and fans alike, the line is set to become available to the public in 2012, while several furs are already available-for-purchase at Montclair’s “Bergen Furs.”

The experience that Alisa gained working in-front of, as well as behind the scenes of the camera, has helped to further her creative and artistic flair. Moreover, the knowledge that she has accumulated by discovering how business is handled on opposite ends of the spectrum has enabled her to become an independent businesswoman and climb the latter-of-success in a much faster pace than most.

Beyond possessing all the attributes of a supermod-el, Alisa Maria’s thought process is always “one-step-ahead” of the game. With an eye constantly on the industry’s rising acts, Alisa has directed looks for Hype Williams, Kat Deluna, Omarosa, and most recently, “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star and up-and-coming recording artist, Melissa Gorga.

Making sure to cover all facets of the entertainment industry, Alisa has worked as a celebrity stylist for dozens of major editorial publications; including ‘InStyle,’ ‘Allure,’ ‘Urban Ink,’ ‘Steppin Out,’ and ‘Essence Magazines.

A true veteran in all major aspects of the entertainment industry, Alisa Maria is only moving forward in 2011. Never forgetting where she came from, the fashion tycoon is always giving back to the community. Earlier this year, Maria sponsored Vinny Gua-dagnino’s of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” IHAV clothing line launch to, “facilitate anti-bullying initiatives in communities across the country.”

Fabulous yet always humble, Alisa Maria is no overnight success. Her vigorous work ethic and dedication to never settle at being second best, illustrates just how far Alisa has been, and is willing to go, to achieve her dreams.

We all like to stand out from the crowd. A few, very lucky people, manage to make a living doing that, and Justin Murphy is one of them. He is the owner, of Til Death 925, a company that makes handcrafted and custom silver jewelry, entirely in the USA. We here at Metropolis Nights got the chance to sit down with him and talk with him about his craft.

You work in a bit of an unusual profession, how did you get into jewelry design?

I used to be a producer, mostly for TV / live events like the Billboard Music Awards. Then, I moved to NY and discovered the jewelry district. They have findings, pre-molded elements that you can use to make jewelry, so I started making it for myself because I wanted something really unique, something that no one else would be wearing.

When I moved out to LA I got exposed to the Rock and Roll chic style and that influenced my style. It was all very Johnny Depp-esque. When I would travel back east, to visit friends and family I would get stopped by people in public, wanting to know where I had gotten my jewelry. After hear-ing enough people say it, I decided to go into business with the help of my father and my fiancée, and see if I could make something out of my interpretation of the style. I wanted everything to be hand made in the US, but I didn’t know anything about how to make pieces from scratch. I got the

equipment, hired a consultant who has been in the business for several years and learned how to do it all myself. The one day I did it without the consultant’s help, and now it is like second nature.

Why did you name your company Til Death 925? Does it have some special significance to you personally?

I wanted the name to be badass but romantic at the same time. Jewelry is something that is very personal to people in this world and silversmithing is a dying art. What we make is not mass-produced or made overseas and our customers tend to collect from us because the style really resonates with each piece. We also have a to the grave warrantee, if something happens to a piece you buy from us all you have to do is send it back, and we will repair it or replace it.

Who is your ideal customer? Who do you picture wearing your designs?

Our customers span a wide range. You can get young guys in bands who can dress as cool as they want to but we also have a lawyer who wears suits all week. It is re-ally about people who want to own something unique. We do a lot of custom work based on customer’s own designs. You can see them on the One Offs section of our website.

Tell me about your design aesthetic in general?

That is a complicated question. I hate being stereotyped into just skulls or scary. I am fond of skulls, but we do a lot of other designs: fleur-de-lis, roses, crosses. I want our pieces to look truly timeless. It’s not like buying an Ed Hardy T-shirt or a juicy sweatshirt, something that will be cool right now and ridiculous later. I want it to be an item that someone could have worn it 500 years ago and that you can wear now and have it be cool, something great with quality and detail. A cross wont be cheesy in 10 or 1000 years.

I know it’s like asking someone to pick between their children, but which of your designs is your favorite? Did you sell it or keep it for yourself?

Actually, there are two pieces I really love. The first is my skull ring. It was the first piece we had ever made, so it was kind of a trial by fire. That piece is now a part of our line, but I made myself one that is different. It is kind of massive and cool. It is something I would never part with. I am happy when I wear it. The second one is something that I made for my girlfriend was in a bad mood. I used a silver key, cut the top off, and added two fleur -de-lis. It made her smile and she wears it every day. That makes it me smile.

What is your inspiration? Where do you get your design ideas from?

A lot of places. I get inspiration from artwork, but basically I know that you aren’t going to re-invent the wheel. A few other guys that do what I do and they think they were the first ones to do some of these things, but these kinds of pieces are really timeless. When I see something I like I try to make it reflect my company, and put my own spin on things. I try to make it better or our own with details you won’t see anywhere else. That is what makes a piece unique.

If you could design one piece with no limitations what would you make?

That’s a good question. I would have one of my favorite bike builders make me a Bobber (a vintage style of bike) and just spend six months adorning the bike with sterling silver accessories. Rivets of skulls, details on the leatherwork, new handles. The idea of taking a piece of art and making it into a Til Death motorcycle would be fun as hell, and one of a kind.

Page 35: Metropolis Nights July Edition

Where’d u get the name?Actually its the combination of my middle name and lastname put together. Benedict Venturina. I wanted to create a short catchy and a bold memorable brand name. Benven. What were your influences?Growing up I was always fond of inspirational stories. Anything with overcoming struggles to become super successful. Sort of like rags to riches stories. So i’d say I was inspired more by people’s courage to put them-selves out there. It’s easy to settle and accept mediocrity but it takes guts to take risks knowing odds are against you. Where did u come up with the idea of creating benven?I’ve had the concept for several years now. I love fashion and attitude of my generation. I coulda sworn so many trends I always spotted two seasons ahead whether it be clothes, music or lifestyle so I wanted to put all of those together. You know I started my brand doing snapback hats and people questioned “why snapbacks? no one wore it anymore.” This was like 1 year before all these sports team snapback hats came into play again. Now I walk around & lots of people wear it now. But now that everyone else is on that style, Im already work-ing on my next style. What would that be?I cant tell you that... (smile) it’s a subtle process. Most styles are inspired not by trying but its just a feeling. If u feel good wearing it, then its a great style for you. People can feel that confidence and most will subconscience-ly copy your look just because they see that confidence when you wear your hat or your shirt or your sneakers. Which designer are you inspired by?I’d say Marc Ecko as far as the spirit of the hustle and how he runs his company. I’d like to meet him one day. The drive of Ralph Lauren. I saw the Oprah interview years back and he mentioned how Bloomingdales wanted to change his initial ties that he sold and he actually turned them down and walked out the door. That’s how secure he was of his product. Months later, they came back begging to carry his ties in their stores. Lastly, Rob Dyrdek. Not because of fashion but just how he lives his life. So carefree, fun but a smart and hardworker at the same time. What is your goal for the brand? To create a brand that’s a trend setter but to always stay true to what it stands for which is to support artists who are on the grind. I know my brand made it when people use BENVEN as an adjective to describe a style or trend that they particularly like.

Page 37: Metropolis Nights July Edition

About You: Hi (: ! My name is Tatiana Ospina . Obvi you already knew that but anywho ... I’m currently studying criminal justice at CCM (County College of Morris). I was born in Dover, NJ. Both my parents are from Medellin, Colombia <3 (the most beautiful city in the world (: ) and I actually lived there for a few years when I was younger so I am definitely very much in touch with my Colombian side. I consider myself a very outgoing person. I always say what’s on my mind and I’m not very shy. At times I can be very sarcastic >:) ! I’m a very hard worker. I’ve always liked having nice things so I work hard for them. I’m very independent. I suck at driving -___- but I like nice cars. I refuse to become a soccer mom unless I have a white range rover! Not just any – it has to be the sport one with tints, black rims with the chrome lip, and leather interior and TVs inside the car to keep the kids entertained lol! I’m very down to earth and laid back. I eat as much

as a 500 pound person probably does. Greek salad from The Spa restaurant has my heart! I have a few close friends and a lot of acquaintances. Overall I have a great life and great people in it (:

Do you follow any current events?: Umm nope, not really. I don’t really like watching the news because they usually only talk about depressing things.

What do you do for fun?: Hmm, I’m a very easily entertained person. For fun I like to party, go out with friends, travel, or simply stay home with my significant other and watch movies (:

Three words your friends would use to describe you: Outgoing, funny, loving.

If you were an animal in the wild what animal would you be?: If I could be any animal in the wild I’d be a white tiger because I think they are simply beautiful – plus tigers are very dominant animals and if I was in the wild I definitely wouldn’t want to worry about getting eaten lol.

What kind of movies do you like?: I LOVE funny movies! My favorite would definitely be The Hang-over <3 Secretly I want to be bestfriends with Zach Galifianakis. I also love scary movies but only if I have someone to watch them with! I try and watch them at home though rather than at the movies because I scream a lot! lol :x And of course girly mushy movies (:

If you won the lottery what would you spend it on?: LOL I actually think about this a lot especially when I’m stuck at work -___- . If I did magically win, the first thing I would do is make my parents retire and give them enough money as to where they would never ever have to work and they could spend their time traveling all over the world. I would also help out my aunts and uncles, maybe build a family busi-ness in which everyone could take part so they’d have a great income as well. Obvi can’t forget about my grandma <3 I would spoil her to no end and hire her a chef and a maid. Everything so she could live like a queen even though I would still ask her to cook sometimes because her cooking is the best. Then I would invest in a lot of property all over the world to make sure I wont run out of money. Finally I’d buy my white Rangey <3 <3 <3 and go on the biggest shopping spree possible! Oh and I would

35

Page 38: Metropolis Nights July Edition

give to the poor (:

Where would be the first place you would want to visit?: I’m actually very thankful to live the life I live because since I was little I’ve traveled a lot BUT one place I’d definitely want to visit is Dubai. That place looks AMAZING!

What is your most prized possession?: Umm materialistic wise I’d have to say a ring my grandma gave me for my first communion simply because she’s one of my favorite people in the whole entire universe and obvi the most important things are family and a good health.

Would you consider yourself a morning person or a night person?: I am DEFINITE-LY a night person! Oh God I hate waking up early! I’m actually kind of cranky in the mornings >.< especially when I get woken up .

How would you describe a perfect date?: Umm, to me a perfect date would be very romantic and I LOVE surprises so if he were to throw a surprise in there, def brownie points! Also great conversations ... There’s nothing worse than awkward silence. I’m pretty talkative so that usually never happens to me but I definitely need something to work with.

Do you have any pets? What kind of pets?: YES (: I have a teacup Yorkie, who at the beginning was MY dog but through time my parents fell deeply in love and she has somehow turned into my little sister lol. She is definitely the biggest brat but she sooooo cute! <3

What are you most passionate about?: I am very passionate about getting what I want. I don’t like hearing that I CAN’T do something because as cliché as it sounds anything is possible. I’m also very passionate about looking my best. I mean obvi like everyone I have days where I’m just laying back in sweats and a t-shirt but I LOVE dressing up! Like I always say, “I rather be overdressed than underdressed.”

If you could do any job what would it be?: If I could do any job I would be ... A TV show host!

Who do you admire the most?: The two people I most admire are definitely my parents <3 they are amazing role models and they are definitely the hardest working people I know! Even though I don’t tell them as often as I should I am extremely thankful to have them to look up to. Thanks to them I’ve always had everything I needed and wanted and they have taught me great values. They are the ONLY people that at the end of the day regardless of my flaws still love me uncondition-ally and would never do anything to hurt me. Not to mention how great they are with each other. I know it kinda sounds corny but I definitely hope that when I have a family one day to be a great wife and mother like my mom is and my future husband definitely has huge shoes to fill cuz my dad is not only the best daddy ever BUT an amazing husband so after seeing that my hubby better be just as good!

What’s your idea of a great vacation?: A great vacation to me is anywhere with amazing beaches! I love to just get away from the everyday routine and go some-where where the only thing I have to worry about is what bathing suit I would be wearing that day! Nothing beats warm weather, clear blue beaches and some cold pina coladas to go with it (; !

If you could live anywhere other than here where would it be?: If I could live any-where rather than here I would move to Miami beach! Just the fact that it’s pretty much summer all year long has me sold! I wouldn’t have to pay for my tan anymore -__- ! Or NYC, I’ve always wanted to live there simply because the atmosphere there is sooo different from here and there’s always something to do!

How did you end up here?: I ended up in NJ because when my parents came from Medellin, Colombia <3 they came straight here so I was born here and been here ever since.

How did you feel about the photoshoot?: I was actually very excited when I was told I was going to be the July centerfold especially because I knew how fun the photoshoots always are. EVERYONE is great! Plus I LOVE getting all dressed up and getting my makeup done!

What was your favorite part of the photoshoot?: The photoshoot was at a winery, need I say more? JK. No but really getting to drink some great wine was definitely a plus! But just overall working with everyone involved in the project was great; we were pretty much laughing the whole time!

Pitch in for the Kids was a reception on Sunday, June 12, 2011 hosted by Amber and CC Sabathia and their PitCCh in Foundation at the Stone Mansion in Alpine, New Jersey. The event’s goal was to bring additional attention and funding to the work of The Therapeutic Nursery at the Kaplen JCC on Pali-sades where Amber Sabathia serves as a member of the board of directors.

The event was a spectacular evening held at the Stone Mansion in Alpine, NJ. It was a night of food, drinks, music, a silent auction, and most importantly fun for a great cause. Amber Sabathia says, “I knew the Therapeutic Nursery was at risk and they are a lot of children who needed scholarships and were not getting them anymore due to state cuts and state funding so we took our foundation and came to throw this amazing party and we hope it raises a lot of money for the foundation.”

The event, from the beginning, took on a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. Fabulous Foods Lead Event Designer and Culinary Creative Menu Designer Fred Luberto has a developed a niche for selecting the proper elements for each event and designing the menu to match the style and design of the event all working within the clients budget. He has an amazing eye and understand-ing of event design within any space which will lead to producing an event with much success consistent with the client’s vision. Fred’s vision and atten-tion to detail were the reason why his Fabulous Foods Catering Company was a great combination for both the venue and event itself.

The scenery and decorations were done with impeccable taste thanks to Fred Luberto and his catering team.

The event location was decorated lavishly. Day beds were posted, red carpet throughout the event, security guards, valet parking, silent auctions, wait staff,

servers, ice sculptures, and food and bar stations. For the step and repeat room, there was a cheese room with a vast selection of internationally cheeses flown in, 4 bar areas for guest’s convenience, serving stations with various meats, sausages, potatoes. A cigar area where a selection of cigars were dis-tributed and the most delectable hand passed hors d’oeurves. Servers walked around cleaning dishes, refilling drinks to the point of perfection.

Fred says, “Working in this environment in this mansion we had to match the food the décor to the ambiance that’s here we really wanted to set a beautiful atmosphere and with Amber such a wonderful human being we really got into it and did a really nice job.” Well Fred I would say you did an Amazing job. Fabulous Foods Catering knows how to happily marry great tasting food with style. Fred your company definitively lives up to its name.

Celebs and Yankee stars in attendance included CC Sabathia, Derek Jeter, Ger-aldo Rivera, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Tiki Barber, Lil Kim, Lori Stokes and David Robertson.

Expressive Inktattoo interview

Author: Katie Gatto

When you modify your body with a tattoo you are mak-ing a permanent change to your body. Getting it right becomes a serious issue, because once you have it, there is no going back. Today, we sat down with Inter-national Tattoo Artist, Trent, the owner of the shop, to look at one of the best tattoo shops in the Garden State, Expressive Ink Tattoo & Piercing Studio, take a sneak peak behind the shop and get you some advice on what to look for in your next tattoo.

Page 45: Metropolis Nights July Edition

So Trent, what made you decide to become a Tattoo artist?

I’ve always had an interest in tattooing. My father is a tattoo artist and I’ve been involved in art as long as I can remember.

Tattoos are as diverse as art, what would you say is your style as an artist?

I wouldn’t try to pigeonhole my style. I can do anything from a portrait, to simple characters. I can work in color, black and grey, or with shading. I would not really say I have one particular style. I try to grow every day as an art-ist and get a even better with each tattoo I do. That is what keeps me into it. It is an honor to have someone let you modify their body.

Tell me about your shop? How is it different from other Tattoo parlors in NJ?

Our shop has a very open feel, with half walls that can screened off or completely closed off for privacy. Our clients are not trapped in a small room with one person. You can have a more social experience. Our facility is new and so clean that my health inspector gets tattooed by me. I know that getting a tattoo can be scary for some people, and you can feel out of your element. We want people to feel comfortable coming in and relaxed enough to ask any questions they may have.

What made you want to open your own shop?

I have wanted to do this for years. I Like being my own boss, but I wanted to be experienced enough to do a great job on each and every tattoo or piercing I do. I guarantee my work. I give 100% each time I do a tattoo, all of my staff does. I have a great team in my shop.

Do you have any favorite designs that you have done?

That is a tough question. You do so many great pieces and meet so many

amazing people, it is hard to choose. It is the person’s reaction that makes me happy. Last month I did an angel on a guy, it was custom job, when we were done he was so in love with it that he said it was better on his body than he ever imagined it in his head. It is the customer’s happiness that makes me feel like I have hit a home run.

What is your touch up policy?

I guarantee all the work. No matter if it is our mistake, such as a short line, or if you scratch it in your sleep, we will touch it up for free. Once we do a tattoo on you, I expect it to be there for life. You should only have to pay for it once.

What is the biggest mistake in Tattoo care that you have seen customers make?

I had a customer once, who went tanning 3 out of the next 4 days after she got the tattoo, and it was destroyed. The original work was thin and dainty. After the tanning, it blew up and bled out. When you tan, your fatty cells expand and become absorbent; it soaks up new ink like a sponge.

What advice would you give to a first timer trying to select their first tattoo?

First, make sure your shop is reputable. Make sure that it is clean and that you like the person who is doing it.

Don’t get a tattoo at home, or at a tattoo party. Not only does the state of NJ not allow it, but it is a terrible idea. It is not clean or sanitary, and you run the risk of getting a bad tattoo, scar or a major illness/infection. I can’t think of a more irresponsible way to get a tattoo.

Mike Felber:  Artist Statement

Art for me is about joy, a complete escape from the world where I let my mind run free at the playground; when I am at this playground nothing else in the world exists. Because of such my artwork relies on simply color, shape and texture with no real narrative to understand

or “not get”. This allows my artwork to be easy to understand while still being eye pleasing enough to hold the viewer’s interest Join me in this playground at www.thefelbs.com

Painting Method-The process of sediment drying in liquid can lead to unparalleled results. Pigment suspended in the liquid is pulled to the edges, via the properties of surface tension, leaving varied amounts of color in different areas within the same puddle. Surface tension is an effect within liquid which causes the surface to behave like an elastic sheet. This effect allows insects such as the water strider to walk on water, as well as other small objects to float on the surface. When this surface tension is disrupted, the liquid will reforms its elastic surface around the perimeter of the new object, reforming the tension that initially existed. When sediment (or pigment in this case) is present, it attracts itself towards the edge of the liquid being

carried by this tension, thus forming a high concentration of sediment around the perimeter of any object in the liquid. When dry, any nooks or crannies in the edge design will be mimicked by the dried liquid.

Detail

My paintings reveal extreme complexity when looked at very closely. Many factors come into play when corralling the sediment topographical textures in the woods surface or the edge complexity of the object in the liquid, as well as the depth of the objects edge in the liquid will play a big role in how things will dry. In a sense, the drying water does alot of the work for me.

Artistic Meaning

I push my art to be as abstract as possible, and as far away from what people are used to, leaving no recognizable objects or story lines, the only story told is expressed through color and line. They are meant to be curious, to be stared at in awe and puzzlement. My art does not conform to traditional canvas or is satisfied with the four lines of a rectangular frame. Everything I paint on in found, boards found curbside from dresser drawers and such make up my painting surface. My brushes are bicycle sprockets and hubcaps and surface tension is how I paint.

Tattoo Critique: By Mike Felber

This tattoo has a striking and awe inspiring

look to it upon first glance. The tattoo depicts the

“Immaculate Conception” where Gabriel puts the

holy spirit into Mother Mary. Images of votive

candles, Rosary beads, Church windows and

doves all extraordinarily well rendered really

bring together this masterpeice of ink.

I am amazed that Biagio has been able to capture

the faces and the threedimensional aspects of

everything so well, something I was never able

to do. He really uses the body and every curve to make everything work well.

Tattoo done by: Biagio Pagliarulo

The idea of a flag waving in the wind conjures up an image that is hard to draw, let alone tattoo not to mention three flags together!! The color alone on this peice jump out incredibly, interweaving like the wind blowing through the flags. This piece depicts the Italian, American and Irish Heritage that anyone from this descent could be proud to have adorning their body.

Tattoo done by: Biagio Pagliarulo

Upcoming shortly, Biagio’s Tattoo

Gallery will be performing tattoos at the Asbury Park Visionary Tattoo Festival, July 29th 31st @ the Convention Hall.
