Driving along Cypress Street inWest Tampa, there has been ongoingconstruction behind the metal fence thatwas once Hector-Elisa’s Health Club. Forthe past eight months, Michael Hettrichof Octillion design + build, inc., has beentransforming the space into a state-of-the-art office for Michael Martin’s branding, sales and marketing company. MichaelHettrich, and his team at Octillion design+ build, is comprised of skilled carpenters, welders, furniture makers, and two fulltime buyers, that search the world overfor treasures to be used in their one of

a kind space transformations. Martinemphasized that he is interested in“function over design” and working withHettrich has been “awesome.” As aWWII buff, Martin was interested inincorporating military objects and designinto the space. His goal was to usecolors, contents and fonts to create acomfortable, engaging space, nothingstuffy or uptight.

“We gutted everything except theexterior wall,” Martin says. “The buildingwas like a time capsule from the 70s.”

Hettrich designed the entire spacearound four red steel beams in theinterior, to create the circular conferenceroom, while the spokes of the wheel offerother offices and meeting spaces. Theentrance is wrapped in dark walnut, withinset photos from the Indy 500. Thephotos from the 50s and 60s are sliced toshow only parts of the race cars. Thereare no light switches on the walls, eachroom has occupancy sensors that willadjust the light when someone enters.Along the interior wall are pathwaylights that can cycle through a myriad of

colors. Inspiration can be found on thefront word wall that pops with its brightorange color. Located just outsideMartin’s office is a built-in bed decoratedwith Balinese art, handwoven fabrics witha Moroccan feel and pillows with fabricsfrom Uzbekistan. A wood barn-like doorcan be closed to offer privacy.

Martin’s office was created with aguns & money theme. He is also a hugefan of Iron Man and an authentic helmetis on display. Hettrich had a movie propcompany create the money and gold bars

that are inside a coffee table. To honorMartin’s Jamaican and British heritage, there are numerous accessories, including a painted Thomasville chestwith the Union Jack and the Jamaicandrum that rests in the corner. Above aset of file cabinets that have been paintedwith “Game On” there is an Elk, whoseantlers have been painted a metallic red.Desk lights have been created withpainted AK47’s and softened withleopard lamp shades.

Continuing around the round hall isa glass window that was installed for a

perfect view of the one-acre playing field. With health and fitness as Martin’spassion, he had a synthetic grass fieldinstalled as an outdoor workout space. In addition, there is a full fitness studiowith a trainer. All employees areencouraged to workout and be healthy. The full kitchen space allows for easymeal preparation. Jokingly, Martin didsay that he asks potential employeeshow many push-ups they can do.

Many of the accessories foundaround the office have been gathered at

There’s no magic formula, secret potion

or fast fix that turns back the hands of time;

but there are simple steps and easy guidelines

women can follow to enhance their health,

benefit their bodies and improve their

quality of life.

The time to start making those changes is

sooner, rather than later, experts agree.

That may mean expanding your list of yearly

medical appointments, engaging in results-

oriented fitness routines that keep you

moving and motivated, and boosting your

nutritional intake to create a more balanced

daily diet.

1Check out what is happening with your health rightnow by getting a check-up. Establishing a baseline of yourcurrent physical condition, with a doctor’s help, providesgreat insight into areas needing improvement. How wellyour body is functioning now, impacts how well itperforms later.

“Every person should have a primary care doctor as anadvocate for their health, not just seek help when troublehas already occurred. Health issues creep up silently quiteearly in life more than people realize. Awareness in your30s may help avoid paying a heavier price in your 50s andhelp you avoid long term, serious consequences from theunrecognized disease,” said Dr. Arthi Sanjeevi, a boardcertified gastroenterologist with Florida Hospital Tampa.“It is important to understand your family history and whatyou may be at risk for.”

Monitor cholesterol levels and keep weight in check toavoid developing fatty liver disease. Have blood and urinetested on an annual basis to check for symptoms ofdiabetes or thyroid imbalances. Avoid crash diets that cancontribute to gall stones, and watch for post-pregnancyissues that can range from pelvic fissures, hemorrhoidsand constipation, to gall bladder disease.

“Women in their prime years are often taking care oftheir families and budding careers at the expense of their

health. It is in a woman’s best interest to focus on herselfearly in the game as an investment towards growing oldergracefully,” Dr. Arthi Sanjeevi added.

Ideally, younger women should undergo physicals withprimary care doctors every two to three years in additionto annual ob-gyn visits, according to Dr. Sharon McKennaof BayCare Medical Group. Women in their 40s will bewise to undertake physicals every year or two, but patientswith blood pressure or cholesterol irregularities may needmedical attention more often, she cautioned.

“I tell people that there is no quick fix. They need totake care of their health in general and keep up with theirphysicals,” said McKenna, a family practitioner who isboard certified in osteopathic medicine.

Being pro-active about our health can mean gettingenough sleep, eating more whole grains and fewerprocessed foods, engaging in at least 2 1/2 hours ofbrisk, physical activity weekly and keeping up withregular screenings and improved treatments, like thelatest HPV vaccine that prevents infections tied tocervical cancer.

“What we do every day does make a big difference. The choices women make now will impact their futureand affect how well they live when they are older,”McKenna added.

2Think your workout isn’t working out? Maybe a changeof pace or place will reinvigorate your exercise routine.

Chris Field felt she was working out harder than everbut, as she approached her 40s, the results she desiredwere harder to achieve. A friend recommended a fitnessregime not yet available locally, so she checked it out, while traveling to South Florida.

The class featured the Lagree Fitness™ Method, a50-minute group or individual exercise program combiningcardio, strength, flexibility, balance and endurance training.Through a series of slow, controlled movements and fasttransitions, people of all ages and fitness levels are able toenjoy a full body workout, that gets their heart rates up andconverts fat into muscle. Workouts require a specializedpiece of equipment, the MegaFormer™, that bears apassing resemblance to a Pilates reformer.

“I felt a really good sore after this workout, in the areasI want to target, that I had not felt in a long time,” saidField, owner of Studio Physique, the first studio to offer theLagree Fitness program in Pinellas County. The formerFOX TV sports anchor/reporter is a lifelong fitness fanaticwho has played competitive sports and coached track, basketball and swim teams.

“Women specifically tell me they’re working musclesthey didn’t even know they had. We work deep into themuscle tissue, targeting slow twitch muscle fibers. It’s easyon the joints and great for the back. It’s low impact, but

intense. Lagree Fitness is really the best of both worlds ofPilates and weight training, with cardio thrown in.”

Liesyl Reuter, head coach at the Brandon Orangetheoryand group personal trainer at the South Tampa site, wasworking full time as a school teacher in New York, whilestruggling with weight gain and Stage 2 diabetes.

“I made a decision to change my life and get my lifeback,” Reuter said. “I was always athletic, playing soccerfrom first grade through college and swimming and divingcompetitively, but I really fell off.” High intensity trainingand better food choices helped her shed 40 pounds.

After relocating to Florida, Reuter took her firstOrangetheory Fitness class. The 60-minute sessions arebased on heart-rate monitored training that measures howhard clients are working, while running on a treadmill, engaging abs, arms and legs on an indoor rowing machineand weights or resistance training.

“I thought I was in shape, but that class really put mein check,” Reuter added. Reuter now coaches clients of allages, and all fitness levels through the signature, fast-paced,no-two-are-ever-the-same sessions, conducted at the loudand lively Orangetheory facilities cropping up throughoutthe Tampa Bay area.

“Your health is your wealth. For women, this workoutwill help maintain bone density, build muscle mass, burnfat and boost their metabolism. When the work is done, you reap the benefits later,” Reuter said.

3A personal battle with an auto-immune conditionprompted Kelly Lessem to evaluate what foods she ate andhow they impacted her health. The yoga instructor, andmassage therapist turned to juicing as a means of makingbetter nutritional choices for her body.

The co-founder of Squeeze Juice advocates juicesmade from fresh, organic fruits and vegetables to ensureyour body gets what it needs and condition it to cravehealthy foods.

“Anyone eating a standard American diet in our countryright now is probably overfed and malnourished. Themajority of the foods people eat are dead, modified or havebeen fortified with artificial ingredients that the body cannot assimilate,” she explained.

A 16-ounce serving is made from fruits and vegetablesthat are ground to a pulp and then pressed to extract thewater; that keeps the nutrients intact, minimizes waste andequates to four to six pounds of produce per bottle.

A working mother, Lessem knows women typically putthe needs of others first. Juicing can conveniently beadded to anyone’s routine, whether they do it at home orfind a favorite provider, such as Squeeze Juice, which haslocations in South Tampa and downtown St. Petersburg.

“Women are natural caregivers and always want totake care of others,” Lessem says. “It can be challenging tomake time for ourselves; but if women can make the rightchoices for themselves, they will make the right choicesfor their families.”

offer plenty of water activities and exquisite div-ing experiences. The crystal clear blue waters, variety of sea life and sunken shipwrecks areideal for novice divers. Numerous beacheseach have their own feel and flavor from familyfriendly sugar-white sands, to the more remoteand rocky romantic. Be sure to visit the SheteBoka National Park on the western shore ofCuracao, where the white caps crash into the“bokas”or coves and the views are spectacular.A fun activity that requires no diving experienceis the new Aquafari Excursion. After a quicklesson on how to operate the underwaterscooter, guests are gliding under the water tosee all the exciting marine life.

Willemstad is the capital city and aUNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Theideal way to discover Willemstad is with aWalking Food and City Tour by local guide,Clarita Hagenaar. Clarita greets and smiles, aseveryone seems to know her. We walked theQueen Emma Bridge across the St. Anna Bay,which divides the city in two – Punda in theeast and Otrobanda to the west. Locals call thebridge the “Swinging Old Lady” or “PontoonBridge,” as there are literally 16 pontoons that

recent trip to the beautiful islandof Curacao made me realize howsmall the world really is. I discov-

ered several people from Tampa that grew upon the island, located in the southern part ofthe Caribbean Sea and 35 miles from Venezuela;and spent an evening out on the town inCuracao with a friend who was born there andlived 14 years in the U.S., but recently returnedto her homeland. Traveling certainly bringsfriends and family together and the opportunityto realize that, as humans, we aren’t really allthat different.

In the local language of Papiamentu,“dushi” means sweet and if referring to aperson, “sweetheart.” After my short stay, I’dsay the island is “dushi” and I certainly wantto return. Curacao is welcoming to tourists andoffers many different type of experiences. Thelocals speak multiple languages, usuallyPapiamentu, English, Dutch and Spanish, soconversing is easy. American Airlines viaMiami, makes access to the island an easythree hour flight. As part of the ABC islands,Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, within theKingdom of the Netherlands, these islands

hold up the bridge. There were several stopsthat allowed the group to taste local foods. Thetastiest stop included lunch at the Plasa Bieu,an open air lunch market with long picnic styletables. Local cuisine included different stewssuch as Yuana (iguana stew), Kabritu Stoba(goat stew), Jamba (okra & seafood soup) andKarko (conch). The portions were large andthe prices very reasonable, (about $8 US perplate). Out on the West End, be sure to dine atJaanchies in Westput. The colorful and friendlyowner and his sons serve local cuisine andrecite the menu to patrons. The fresh fish andgoat and iguana stews are prepared daily andreally delicious. A visit to The Floating Marketalso offered a peek into the local Venezuelantraders that dock their boats filled with freshfruits and vegetables and fish. For a chic, ultraevening, the Papagayo Restaurant creates anatmosphere that you might find in Miami. Thesleek furniture and décor and delicious diningshould be on the must-do list.

There are numerous hotels, apartmentsand small inns that are available for lodging. From the well-known, family friendly HiltonCuracao, to the more romantic and intimate,Kontiki Beach Resort, a week’s stay in Curacaowill leave you recharged and refreshed, andlonging to return to this “dushi” island. ith the holidays just aroundthe corner, it is now timefor wine lovers to focus on

celebrating with a special wine. As thecooler weather arrives, so does theopportunity to drink some differentstyles of wine. If summer is dominatedby crisp, clean whites and rosés, thenthe holiday season affords the luxury ofsome richer, fuller and bolder styles. Here are some picks that will help makethis holiday season the best ever.

What would the holiday season be

without bubbly? This year enophilesshould be on the lookout for the 2005Taittinger Comtes De ChampagneBlanc de Blancs ($180). This tête decuvee is all about elegance. TheTaittinger’s house style exemplifieselegance by using Chardonnay as thepredominant grape in the blend, andrelying less on Pinot Noir and PinotMeunier than any other GrandeMarques Champagne producer. Theresult is a clean, light on its feet, mineraland citrus driven wine with a long floral

finish. Serve this impressive wine withcaviar, shellfish, seafood of all kinds andeven game birds.

Amarone might be the world’s mostwinery wine. Hailing from theValpolicella region, just outside of thecity of Verona, Amarone is the only winein the world produced by the process ofappassimento. The appassimentoprocess is unique because upon harvestthe grapes are sent to well ventilated loftsallowing the grapes to rasinate. Thegrapes are kept to dry for approximately

four months which intensifies theirflavors and concentrates their sugarlevels. The partially dried grapes arethen fermented into a rich, heady andcompelling dry wine style known asAmarone, which literally means bitterstrong. The 2001 Masi ‘Mazzano’Amarone della Valpolicella ($150) isone of the regions finest offering withits flavors of cherry, black plum, raisin, dried fig, dates, cocoa powder, cinnamon, vanilla, mocha andmushrooms. Try serving this incrediblewine with hardy preparations such asgame, grilled meats or stews.

It is often said that CabernetSauvignon is the king of red grapes, and this holiday season Cabernetlovers should seek out the 2012Odette Cabernet Sauvignon ($100).The Odette winery is located in theStag’s Leap District within Napa Valley.Due to its location in the southern part

of the valley, the wines from this areaalways possess elegance due to thecooling effect from the nearby San PabloBay. The 2012 vintage throughout NapaValley was superb with powerful, fruitforward wines with ripeness, balanceand longevity. The 2012 Odette CabernetSauvignon offers flavors of cassis, raspberry liqueur and a gorgeousperfumed nose of dried violets, lavenderand savory herbs. The wine possesses aperfect balance of power and eleganceand is my pick for the best CabernetSauvignon of the year!

If you are looking for the perfectfinish to your holiday celebrations, thenlook no further than the TaylorFladgate 20 Year Tawny ($50). Formore than 300 years Portugal’s TaylorFladgate has been synonymous withremarkable consistency and exceptionalquality. Now into its fourth century,Taylor Fladgate is the only winery in

Portugal that has remained 100 percentfamily run throughout its history. The winebrings to mind all things caramelizedincluding flavors of crème brulee, toffeeand crème caramel. The wine is silky andwell balanced with high acidity inviting asecond and third sip. The palate is a mixof fig, dates, dried apricots and a toasty, nutty long and delicious finish. Tryserving this alongside a wide array ofdessert or on its own to wow your gueststhis holiday season.

If you serve these wines this holidayseason, you will not only satisfy yourfriends and family, but look like a prowithout having to study for your MasterSommeleir exam. Cheers and happyholidays! M

Available with a pickthree, five or seven option, there are usuallyeight or nine meat and cheese offerings onthe menu, along with a couple off-menuitems to mix and match. The servers aretrained to make recommendations inputting together a tasty blend of soft andhard cheeses and meats. The choice ofcheeses includes a variety such as theMazzaro Grana Riserva and the RobiolaDue Latte, both from Italy. A tasty Bay Bluehails from California. Meats include Speck,a dry age and the Prosciutto Di Parma, along with several types of salami and aPaté of the Day. T The menu rounds out with a variety ofplates from the gluten free Chicken andKale Ravioli to the Sweet Potato Gnocchi.
