Radebe was in the city recently to inspect work on the Bridge City project in Inanda. Bridge City is a multi-billion urban renewal residential project that includes an underground railway station. He said efforts to provide integrated transport would help eThekwini realise its economic potential. “The Bridge City develop- ment will give KwaMashu, Inanda, Ntuzuma and Phoe- nix a facelift, and it brings opportunities for the people of this area,” Radebe said. The minister said his department would ensure the project was complemented by a sound transport system. “I am pleased to announce that through South African Rail Commuter Corporation, more than R350-million will be invested in the under- ground Bridge City station and the rail extension that will serve 40 000 commuters a day and handle 14 000 passengers in peak hours.” He said more than R350- million was being invested on the new roads, road upgrades and public amenities within and surrounding Bridge City. A R750-million shopping mall is also on the cards for the area. Radebe, accompanied by KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC, Bheki Cele, and Mayor Obed Mlaba, later visited La Mercy, where Radebe laun- ched a road improvement project for the R102. The road will be a gateway to the new airport now being built in the area. Cele said the airport would create about 6 000 jobs. He said his department would be spending about R400-million on improving roads leading to the airport. The new airport, which will replace the Durban Inter- national Airport, is expected to be ready by May 2010, in time for the World Cup. The 3 700m runways will accommodate the latest aircraft, including the A380 Airbus, and can be extended to 4 000m.
